  1. I can supply Mach 5 weld on beadlocks, you don't need to cut off the old rim bead and the finished article looks just like a factory Mach 5 beadlock.

And they are cheaper than £50 a wheel.

    Adrian

Are these the pressings like original mach 5's or are they the flat plate style affairs?

  2. I have a brand new Toyota HiLux, the old Nissan 4.2 Patrol (me tow'er) and my wifes car and all are better suited, more comfortable and cheaper to use on the road.

    End of.

    End off??

Just because you are well setup to trailer your car, doesn't mean to say everyone else has. If a newcomer wants to do Challenge, he must spent thousands on a car, with tyres, winches, difflocks, roll cage you name it. To than add a tow vehicle and a trailer on top of that, a lot of people are already flat broke at this stage.

I am a bit stubborn here, because in my case, I could buy a towvehicle and probably hire a trailer, but plain cant be asked.

For the majority however, it is down to what they can commit to.

  3. Right, this subject is touched many times before, and will be touched again for sure.

From a legality standpoint, if you trailer your car to a quarry, do an event, and trailer back home again, hydrosteer is ok. Most UK events are going this way, unfortunately. But this club seemingly does not want this group of people to turn up at their event. I think it should be applauded that there are events catering for people that need their car to be road legal.

There is only one more event like this in the UK (from memory) and that is the muddy truckers.

So, it is almost like you need Hydro steer to be competitive on all other events. My argument would be that if all organizers stipulate the mechanical link rule, things would develop into steering systems that alow you to do the same as hydrosteer, but are road legal. That would be the best development I could think of.

  4. Daan, i wouldnt say 150hp is anywhere near the reliability limits of the 300tdi block etc. Its built like a tank, and when you consider something like the VAG 1.9TDi can be hopped up from 130hp to near 200 on stock internals, and even the TD5's regularly are pushed to 170-200hp you'll see that 110 to 150hp really isnt a big deal.

I recon you can get 150hp from a TDi using nothing but the stock engine hardware. Your reaching the limits of the stock injectors at that point anyway so thats were i'd be aiming for if i had a TDi. Big cooler, lots of boost and plenty of fuel and you'll be knocking on the door of 150hp. To get it set up properly though you need an EGT gauge, go too far without a guage and you'll break something.

Yes, i know all that, I think mechanically it will probably stand up to it, but the headgasket will let go at this kind cylinderpressure, and you will start to see more blowby past the pistons. I saw a few TDIs like this and oil leaking out of every seal, due to high crank pressure. Just because you can achieve these qouted power outputs now, doesnot mean it will achieve it, say 100000 miles down the road.

For example, the JCB dieselmax landspeedrecord engines in standard tune deliver 140 hp, in landspeed record tune 750 hp.

It is achieved by changing all the internalls to the highest spec known to man to stay allive, but even so, it lasts only 30 min with this kind of power.

If you are willing to accept less live of an engine, by all means tune it to death, otherwise, know your limits.

  5. Well, in my limited experience of engine tuning, if you are running the big slab intercooler, ported head etc., you probably have reached the limits of what your engine can put out reliably. If you asking another 20 hp on top of that, you are probably looking at a 150 hp from an engine that originally puts out 110 hp. About +35%. It is possible, but to than expect it to take you to spain and work really hard in very hot conditions, will involve a yellow taxi return one day for sure.

From what I have seen, with that increase in power, you want to start thinking about some funky pistons and that kind of thing.

For sure some people will shoot me down shortly and tell I dont know what I am talking about but there you go, my opinion.

  6. I would say stick with the Lt 85. I doubt the length of an r380 is exactly the same, in which case your into different mounts on the transfer box, different props and god knows what.

The main thing I dont like about the r380 is the fact that reverse is oposite to 1st and 2nd, making quick changes hard, which in offroad situations can be vital.

The lt 85 is also lighter (although that is probably a downside for you  ). It would be interesting to know how much though. Maybe dave ashcroft can tell us this fact.

  7. John,

Have you looked at the Milner ones? Shaft in and shaft out etc and quick change ratios. Commonly used by the Safari racing boys so should be pretty strong!

    Jon

They reverse the rotation though, which wasnt what john was after I think. And they cost big money which isn't normally what HOFS are about...

Anyway, it would help if you tell us the application so we can be more specific. Plus we are dying to know what you are planning

  8. You may have thrust bearing peoblems with helical gears.

I worked out that in a series gearbox in drive the gears push towards each other, in overrun they push apart loading the thrust bearings.

I stripped the splines off a SIII gearbox mainshaft when I tried to bump start a mis-timed Perkins 4203

depends which direction they turn. Plus, I know the input gear has the bearing size the same on both ends, so no problem there. Not sure about the output gear, may be worth taking a look inside.

  9. I know they "look the part" but I can't really understand why. Should I hang onto mine or sell them and take early retirement?

I might be standing on some feet here, but I think they look awfull myself, so I would suggest sell them at the earlyest opportunity...
