  1. You potentially have to go SVA, if you play by the current rules. Mine was registered before 2002, when things were less strict.

I personally wouldn't waste time with a series gearbox or transferbox, especially if you have the parts. The rangerover (and disco) have a longer bellhouse though, which needs swapping for a defender one, if you were to build it 88".

  2. I think its similar to the boyrace culture (no offense to anyone). They dont go racing either do they? But for a lot of people the thought that their vehicle can go offroad doesn't necesarily mean they do it. Most discos or rangys never go offroad anyway, so why were they bought in the first place. If you tell the average jo block the carpets got wet due to wading, he thinks your mad. Most people dont want that and therefore might as well forget about the snorkel. I have seen defenders with snorkels that were not even connected! Still the snorkel is probs the most popular mod. I think the camel trophy have inspired a lot of people to this kind of thing.

I suppose its a culture, lots of people like the look of an offroader and thats it. The result is that people like yourself make a living out of it, so I wouldn't question it to much if I were you!

  3. Having read the thread on pegged diffs, I was impressed and as the rear diff has to come out this Christmas thought OK thats on the to do list, so was chatting to a mate as you do and he come back with this from a well respected off roader and competitor.

He doesn't peg his diffs, just machines a groove in the half shaft near the hub end to give a natural shear point, therefore before any damage is done in the diff the half shaft will shear and at a relatively easy point to change, now thats also struck me as a damned good idea, obviousely how much to machine out is important, but a much easier route to go than moding diffs etc.

    Any thoughts.

No need to machine a groove, they will break just as easy without

  4. But in Holland everyone drives at 22mph anyway so why bother? Seriously the social benefits / employment protection / welfare state means the government have to tax everything.

Correct again, especially the unemployement benefits are amazing, compared to the UK. The result being that a certain group of people (potentially an etnic minority) works for a few months and than deliberately sits back and does nothing. I am not keen on paying for this. and yes holland is a traffic jam all over.

My first post was probably a bit strong, but I am not looking to go back. I expect Mastersplicer to turn up here soon and give his views. The last time I spoke to him he had sold his house and was about to disapear to sweden, for similar reasons as me. so, there you go.

  5. I think that at the moment we are still lucky. Was talking to our friends from Holland - they pay between €30-€200 PER MONTH for each car - that is why most of them had their 4x4 converted into "commercial vehicles" but the gouverment closed this loophole for them as well. Sadly :( some of them had to give up their 4x4 (Defenders belong to the most expensive group) because they could not afford them :(

Correct, My father owns a discovery in holland and pays well over a grand a year on road tax, due to its weight and the fuel (diesel and gas pay double the road tax, as there is less tax on the fuel).

The 'commercial' loophole has now been closed, as since early this year any person who is not vat registered pays full whack. Also, the tax on new cars is the highest in europe. So putting a car on the road is mor expensive than anywhere else in europe. And for the speedcameras: Well at least in this country they are painted yellow, allowing you to put the brakes on in time (whatever that means for roadsafety). In holland they hide cameras in wheelybins, undercover cars behind trees you name it.

    The place is a sh1thole.

  6. I reckon magnets would work well, and bring the weight to 1 kg.

When can you start chucking them out? I think orange would be a good colour, a shame loads of people now fall over me and think I have connections with a certain company....

  7. I need a piccy and if possible part#s for Disco-II steering shaft / UJ's as they're different from, well, everything else <_<

Also if anyone knows where to get them for less than £45 shaft / £20 UJ then please shout!

    Hi John,

Is the disco 2 spline smaller than the ordinary def/d1/rangerover? In that case, I might have a uj which I bought in error on old sodbury a few years back. It had an ordinary spline on one end, and a smaller spline on the other. I think it is a p38 part, not sure. I will have a dig in the box with ods and sodds this weekend.

Failing that, have a look at this:

    http://www.howeperformance.com/accessories-ujoints.htm

You could make a conversion uj by buying 2 sizes and make up one out of the parts from these.

How about the track rod, could you share the solution with us for that end?

  8. The first and last time anyone will read the words "sophisticated city" and "Coventry" intentionally typed in the same sentence :D

I go there for work BTW ;)

    Lewis

I knew that I was going to get some stick for that one; I lived for 6 months in coventry, where the tramps take over the citycentre after 6 pm.

I can surely say: You make it there, you make it anywhere.....

  9. Well, I voted northern europe.

Really, I am originally a cloggy, from the land of windmills, drugs and red light districts.

I spent my life with your uk lot since 1998, apart from a 1 year flirt with the czech republik (2005). Oh, before that I spend 6 months in luxemburg, but voted not to go back there ever again.

I tried to be really sophisticated with my choice of citys, so I can make up for shortfalls in my personality....

Luxembourg, Cambridge, Prague, coventry and now Bicester of all places.

  10. I asked Dave about pegging my 4.75 kam cr&p but was told that due to the thicker crown wheel that Kam use there is not enough room left in the housing to fit the slipper assembly.

My reason for wanting to go pegged was that I have managed to stretch/bend the 11 bolts that hold the crownwheel to the ARB.

I am not running stupid horsepower (slightly tweaked 2.8 izusu) and I am running std rr 10 spline shafts.

If I had been running stronger shafts I think I would be looking at broken crownwheel bolts by now.

I run kam 4.75s with ashcroft pegged diffs. It involved slightly modifying the slipper pad, but not to fancy. What was very involved was the fact that I had the pegging done with standard diffs and then changed to different CWPs and diffs. The dia of the diffflanges are different and I had to turn them down.

By the way, the slipper pad is not supposed to touch in normal use.

  11. Would carbon fibre be sufficiently impact resistant? I thought it snapped rather than deforming, but I really don't know what I'm talking about...

Problem is that it shatters on a big impact, so any more than 1 big impact and your cage is gone. F1 and sportscars do have carbon roll hoops though.

Anyway, I would like to add to my earlyer comment on the subject of BB: While it is maybe ok for a straight piece of tube, where you bend a tube, the weld will stretch/compress/bend a lot (depending how the tube is positioned in the former) and therefore totally unpredictable. When I say I wont use it, I have to add to that that I wont use it in a situation were bending is required. I used some box section ERW for high loaded parts, which I believe is acceptable as long as you dont need to bend it.

The earlyer comment I read from people saying that a rollcage is only there to rub trees at 2 mph is total bullsh1t in my opinion. For rubbing trees you only need a bit channel riveted to the roof or do nothing.

The argument of low speed is also irrelevant.

What I think is important is the fact that we are off road: in quarys, on mountainhills, big gullys etcetera.

Al places were there is a lot of height differences in very small places. This brings all kinds of dangers, rolling down hills, landslides and other things that you cant predict. So get that cage sorted properly and expect you will need it. I needed it when I never expected it to go wrong.

I did a back flip and double barrel roll as a result and I think We should learn from the mistake I made.

  12. For me, a lot of those arguments fall apart the moment you go into the mud - you can stick 10 or 20kgs of mud into the gaps on a LR very easily - wheels, chassis rails, traps in bodywork... not to mention all the protection gear people bolt on (6mm plate steering guard anyone?), the heavy winches & batteries, spare half shafts, etc. etc.

If people were seriously concerned about weight they'd take a long hard look at their trucks and remove all the bits that serve no useful purpose.

I dont agree with the first bit; Because if you manage to save 500 kg on your landy; adding 20 kg of mud, still results in a 500 kg lighter landy afterwards. A lot of landys are prepared very heavily, but if you design things well, there is no need for this.

I am getting a bit fed up with people saying weight is not important because the car is heavy already; all preparations add weight so if you manage to do something that loses weight all the better.

  13. I personaly wouldn't allow BB tube anywere near my car: It potentially splits on the weld in a big impact. Forget that £15 pound saving per metre for a moment and picture yourself barrel rolling down a hill. In motorsport regs it is specifically forbidden to use this material.

The reason : BB = MM

Just to be sure that everyone understands, for people that need an explanation: Blueband (or ERW) is mickey mouse material.
