  1. have to agree with dlander; I had a job opportunity abroad and went for it. The landy was parked up with a good friend, and 16 months later I was back and happy to drive it again. For me the thought of having it is probably more important than actually driving it.

  2. If you are importing a new car, BPM is not an issue. BPM is only issued when you register the vehicle in holland. I think BTW is deductable if you export. You would have to pay VAT (if required for a commercial vehicle) when it arrives in the UK.

Cars in holland are extremely expensive after adding BPM and BTW, and the roadtax about five times higher than in the UK, which is why they are cheaper before adding tax. I dont understand that the europeen union has not stopped this situation, but there you go, thats how things are at the moment.

What chance do we think they have???

Not a hope in hel. I mean the camera catches your registration number, which is in your name. So that means you are liable for the ticket. You could go in defence by telling nobody was driving the car, but I doubt very much anyone would take you serious.....

Anyway, saying that a your personal details are secret and you cant give these details wouldn't impress anyone in court. That means you get away with murder because you cant tell anyone what you did.

  4. I very much like the S3 for its shape; the classic landy shape that anyone will recognize. I like a compact car, so its a swb, shorter than a Fiat panda.

I bought mine when I was 17, earned from doing the local paper delivery and working in a t-piece factory. It was my first car and I learned all the mechanical tricks with it -the hard way.

I still got it, I am 33 now, so that makes it 16 years. It is now obviously not the same underneath, with a 300 TDI, five speed box and coilsprung. But to me, it is just the same car as when I bought it. I deliberately tried to make it look like the good old S3, never understand why people call a flat front on a landy an upgrade- its perfect to fit a winch and just looks right.

I have rebuilt it twice now, emigrated to three different countrys with it, shipped it around the world, took it through the jungle, I crashed it heavily, and returned it back to the old shape:

The second rebuilt was mainly meant to make it more reliable and useable, with all the modern technology. A shame I still spend loads of time like this:

  5. I would not go to fancy on it, especially if you're not into cutting and shutting big lumps of metal. I would get quaiffe involved and drop the question if they are interested idoing a gearkit for your box. They already do a freelander diff, so there must be a market.

  6. Warning: alcohol before getting into a rally car is seriously dangerous!

My mate got in a rally car the day after a big pi$$ up and after the third jump his stomach decided to dispose of food and drink in the same direction were it came from. He was wearing an integral helmet........

Thought I warn you for this.

  7. solidworks Daan,

just some toys some friends are knocking up - more bling than its humanly possible to gaze upon without going blind

Im still using Autocad and crayons - Ive spotted a problem though, the wax from the crayon is difficult to rub off the screen :(

I'll give it a try- you will be surprised what I can face.

    Try tipex.

  8. Okay - the scores on the doors

    img001Small.jpg

You can see the little logo of the car which shows front/rear & left/right if you can't read the writting on the scales

GBMUD - pretty close there chap :)

about the same as a challenge prepared 90. Pretty good I would say. It looks like the spring rates or the platform height is not distributed evenly; it is trying to balance on left rear and right front.

It is set up like an ovalracer. What could that be?

  9. Slightly ot: Whats the final word of a 300TDI versus a TD5 when it comes to consumption? I remember people complaining about the TD5 being thirsty. Anyone has the exact answer how they compare?

  10. I posted something along these lines in the Series forum.

I have been running reverse Ackerman angles on my portal axled Landy for years, and I would never go back to normal Ackerman linkage. The steering feels sharper, more direct and positive,Tyre scrub? Front tyres (Simex Pedes)don't scallop anymore, they stay square and sharp and last longer. The turning circle is even tighter. Making a tight turn on a damp lawn only leaves a defined Simex tread print, no scuffing or gathering of the grass and soil.

i would highly recommend that someone get hold of a RHS TD5 Defender swivel housing and make an up front track rod that has a tapered eye for the draglink to plug into similar to leaf sprung LandCruisers, Nissans etc. You have very little to lose and everything to gain, and if you don't like it, big deal, go back to the original setup.

    Bill.

I have looked at it, put the parts together to do it, but there is too much other stuff in the way. The Panhard rod (especially on a LHD vehicle which is what I have) is very close to the diff as is and will foul the draglink. I think the droparm is in the way on full bump as well.

Not saying its impossible, but not straightforward.

  11. Nice Daan like that and specially your wheel arch. Very nicly done. you are running 35"isn't it?? Was thinking to do similair to create space for the 36" Any suggestions what you would change when you had to do it again??

    rob

I personally like the endresult, but toooo muuuch tiiiime coooonsuuuuuming. Thats all really. I will fit a rear winch at some stage, so far ignored for financial reasons.

The space proved very usefull, I also run radius arms on the rear suspension, so no a-frame in the way. The aluminium channel allows 2*20 litre jerrycans to be fitted on their back in front of the spare wheel.

The idea of the waffles on the bonnet worked very well for us during the RFC, you need them at the front while competing. It only gave us a bonnet with no paint left on it.

Brackets for this are is on the list of things to do for the future.

  12. Here:

    daan041.jpg

They double up as my false (antislip) floor in normal use. They are locked into place by closing the rear door. Length is almost full length, they go under the bulkhead and the seat base. The length is only limited by the PTO sticking out of the transferbox.

During competition, I have them loose on top of the wheelboxes.

  13. Hi Daan are you qualified to comment on such matters maybe we should see some proof (hahaha)

By the way this is Shaun RFC2005. How are you keeping? Are you going this year? I'm off to RFCportugal in October Liz is meeting us there.

No. Ignore what I said about anything made by Whitepeak engineering or QT cos its just great. Just dont use it if you need to rely on it for ten days of extreme hammering, thats all.

I am dutch (which is equal to say I am a tight b@st@rd) and £225 is more money Than I spend on my springs and shocks together. It is one of those typical things that people spend £225 and seem to think that their cars performance has increased by £225.

No Jungle for me this year. I only need my junglefix once every two years.

Besides, I am busy doing exiting stuff like decorating the house I just bought in the UK.

This also means that I can't go for another reason...........

    Shortage of wedge.

Good to hear from you anyway, welcome on the forum.

  14. The rear diff at least appears to be of Hypoid construction. The steering trackrod is up front and higher up than a Defender. If the LT85 has been redesigned with better bearings that would be at least 3 points in their favor.

    Bill.

I dont believe it is, bill. The diffs are ordinary series diffs, but with different ratios; the axles are exactly series casings, but wider. Hence the draglink up front.

Have a nose on this website, they are offered for sale as seperate parts: http://www.heystee-automotive.com/index.htm
