  1. what a load of cold air! Yes airing down makes a big difference, and I usually do it if i go offroad. If you have an old tyre on a rim, chances are they are rusted stuck to the rim. No way that ever comes off, even if you want it to....

Inner tubes are the way to go if you want an easy solution. Fit the tyres dry (no soap), I have run this successfully to 8 PSI during the Croatia trophy.

Other solutions are beadlocks obviously or sikaflex the tyres to the wheels. I believe some comp safari guys use this idea.

  2. Interesting write up, I would have overlooked it at that price to be honest. My current mig is dead, so Looking for a replacement. How thick steel can you weld with one of these? Also, there is mentioning of 16 amp fuses, where as my house only features 13 amps. I presume my wiring needs an upgrade, or is it a case of putting a 16 amp fuse in?

Personally think they were onto a good idea with the freelander.

It has a smaller engine so is more road and fuel friendly it's still 4x4 so has a certain range of versatility but has lots of extras that make it a nice going out shopping to the opera etc (whatever it is your supposed to do in them) type of car

I agree. It is what the market wants. I can't say the same of the Evoque, but they do sell like hot cakes so who am i to judge?

The freelander replacement, the discovery sport I would consider as a family car if it weren't for the 40 k price tag.

  4. I personally don't use them. The risk of them coming off is to great, plus they weigh a ton. If you want to use spacers, try 25 mm longer wheel studs and the spacer in between the wheel and the hub. This is what happens in race and rally applications if you change camber and the track width is set by regulation.

I have widened my (steel) wheels by 50 mm, to give the extra 25 mm wider track (per side). My main reservation to going wider is the strain on the steering box and joints in case of a big impact. so 25 mm is pretty much as far as I go. The argument of more wear is true also, but I run earlier (wider) hubs, were the bearings sit much further apart, reducing the leverage. Wheel bearings have never been a problem with this set up.

Buying an umpteen thousand £££ vehicle that is perceived my many to be "classy" does not automatically promote you up the social ladder. How you conduct yourself, treat others and how they remember you is the ultimate mark of an individual. Expensive objects are nice to have but in reality are only first world trinkets.

    Innit.

JLR are quite capable of producing vehicles to satisfy all levels of the market but at the moment at least are aiming at sectors where they believe they will get the best return in profit and ongoing business.

You are right about this, and were getting really philosophicall on this subject. My Polo Bluemotion works really well for me....(apart from the little emission problem of course)

You know what I mean, Shak - bling is for pop stars, footballers and drug dealers, ie new money with no sense of decorum.  That's what I mean by class, not the old class system of upper, middle and lower - I could never make it up those ranks.  But remember in Four Weddings how the aristocrat drove a tatty old SII 88"?  That's not unrealistic - the truly wealthy stay that way by not wasting their money, and they know the difference between class and brass!

Like the comment about not wasting money. Interestingly, the series landy was worth pennys until recently. Now I see some for sale well over 10K. I also remember the range rover voque first being sold, and what a classy and expensive car it was. You really were someone if you drove one of those! again, until recently, You couldn't give one away, and now they started gaining in price.

The whole thing about landrover changing their ways: They need to compete with the likes of Mercedes audi and BMW, who go the same way, so it is only natural.

I must admit, If I had the choice of either of the above, It would be the new range rover, purely because of the appearance of it. It has that classy appearance more than anything else on the market.

  7. Has anyone made a "utility" station wagon? I am considering this as part of a rolling restoration of my 109 SW. If anyone knows of any photos, I'd like to see. Couldn't find any via a Google search. I

have seen pictures of this being done, but it was not a factory option.

Also, would an 88" side panel with no windows replace the 109" side panels as a direct swap?

    Yes they are.

    Thanks

  8. Fridge, have you actually established which size taper you need? A taper angle would be a start and it follows from. There must be one that fits. The link of the reamer i gave you should allow you to work out the angle. I wouldn.t bother with adaptors as it always means you reduce the diameter from where you are now. To vulcan: anything less than en36 for a halfshaft is a bit of a waste of time as you cannot harden en24 or less. Better than what landrover uses but still not great. Maybe ok for a steering rod though.

  9. I went to lillehammer to the 10 year jubileum of the landrover club norway. Great experience and views. there is a campsite next to the lillehammer olympic bobsleigh track were you can get a ride in a 4 person bobsleigh, driven by an olympic steer, and the bobsleigh is on wheels (in the summer obviously). Topgear was there once to do a feature on a bobsleigh vs a rally car. ridiculous speeds on one of those! Lots of gravel roads (a bit like finland), sometimes there is a letterbox where you have to leave some toll money before you can drive on it. Proper offroad tracks also feature, but many are not allowed without permission. Yes bring your own beer. There is a LPG, (remember what I told you about 12 months ago.....). Great atmosphere, and we won the club trail! this was 1997.
