1. Do you need a 4 wheel drive? Do as I do have a 4 wheel drive and a merc to do the miles.
2. The drain with the alternator connectered should be 0.02 amps so check the new alternator. No way should it be 0.34 amps.
3. How old are we talking about?
4. Yes my P38 ran well went it was going. I think your TD5 is manual where mine was auto Elbekko you must have a good one or they don't like being used at weekends only. How much do you use your classic? Thinking about it my P38 had done 160k in 10 years so it had not sat in a garage broken, it was used so may be that the answer and my Merc would not be so reliable if it did only 3000 miles a year. Older cars with no electronics are happy to sit like my old tractor that will sit 9 month between uses and starts first time.
5. I had a Disco ES auto TD5 for 14 months which replaced a classic I'd had for 8 years. I hated ever minute , slow uncomfortable noisey 23mpg so I got a P38 dse. What a great car ,it had been chiped so went well 30 plus to the gallon on bio what more could any body want. Then it started going wrong and it went wrong for 2 1/2 years so I no long trusted her and the RAC man was on first name terms. One of its last trips was to fetch a soft dash classic from Northumberland. A round trip of 460 miles. She never missed a beat and returned 27mpg on bio. Must have known she was going. I now have a 300tdi auto classic that I can fix and I would anywhere in her. So I would say if you want a weekend toy get a P38, if you need a daily drive get a merc.
6. +1 Tdi as well with a bit of tuning. Simple and cheap on the none electronic ones.
7. Check your centre diff is ok, if not the new ones will be as bad in a couple of months.I got though two sets before finding the cause.
8. Never got more than 23 . Had it checked and it was running fine but who knows with electronic diesel control, also it was auto.
9. When I said Disco I men,t a disco 1.

Had a Disco2 before my P38, worst car I,ve ever owned. Not on reliability but ever think else.

Expensive parts, slow, drank fuel, noisey, and dam uncomfable. could go on!

In the 21/2 years I had my P38 I replaced the air bags pump, heater blend motors and o rings, fuel pump, radiator.

In the 9 years I had my 3.9 classic I only had to due service items.
10. Rot won,t leave you at the side of the road waiting for the RAC man and then the tow truck. There are good ones out there but you need to spend spend spend to keep them that way. I don,t like the look of a disco but look at what good ones are fetching!
11. If you think classics are bad multiply by 10 then you have a P38 You can,t fix them yourself with out the software and most of the electronics are linked. Had mine 21/2 years great drive but never trusted it so gone back to a classic with a 300TDI, which I can fix cheaply. Best of luck if you do buy one lots of motor for not much money.
12. Hi I,m about to put a 300tdi in my classic Rangerover auto and I,m looking for the best MPG, so what do you folks think I should go for? Hope I,m not opening a can of worms.
13. well said good on you Martin. It good that not every body thinks new is best. A lot can be said for not being tired to the steelers.
14. If you get rid what do you replace it with?
15. Ducktape then seal the inside and outside edge with pu. This keeps the ali from the steel and helps with keeping the water out.
16. Ho my thats going to need some welding if it anything like the one I payed £500 for and the worst is if some as be there before you. It makes the job twice as hard, would you peaple who have been there not a gree?
17. Just the point some go properly better than others regardless what you do to them. Why make some thing more complicated than it need be.
18. I,ve had both and would not want one again, gone back to a classic with a 300tdi, simple and good mpg. Which can,t be said for the TD5 or the P38. Best of luck anyway and nice work but I think I would have just broke the td5 and got rid off off one.
19. I run the house heating on it so to me it does have a value and its nice to use a product that most peple find a problem.
20. Hi done about 90k with two 3.9 range rover classics. Both had gas rings and both fitted by me. They where simple to set up and reliable, loads of fork trucks can,t be wrong. One I wired up so the engine ECU was switched of so back to a nice simple car that didnt mind getting wet . Now run diesels on bio much cheaper and no electronics to go wrong at a drop of a hat.
21. Hi where are you I,l have it if local if not put it on the bay as a freebe it will soon go. If any body as any near boston Lincs, PM me and i will collect if a good amount. Thanks Paul.
22. Had a 2.5dse, great drive but never trusted it.Got 27mpg on a round trip of 460miles fetching a range rover classic on Bio Hated going to Asda pain to park. Replaced all the air suspention so it only let me down once. In the end never used it because of the lack of trust so sold it and got a 300tdi auto. Not as nice to drive but you can fix it and park it.
23. Had 2 Range Rovers on single point LPG, both 3.9s, one did 100k and the other 60k with no problems. Fitted both my self and set them up. I think most off the problems come from bady tuned engines. There are loads of fork trucks out there one single point systems that run all day and don,t start on petrol with no problems. Yes I would not fit one to a Lexus but a Range Rover engine is from the 60,s.
