  1. Loads of british leyland boxes had that isssue, if ya mean that you just have to drop through the gate of second before shifting into first. Mini's were like that and allegro's maxi's etc. Going now cos i'm feeling old
  2. Can't believe no-one's answered this yet ... I wondered about doing that a while ago when i needed a new rad but for some reason just fitted a standard. If ya do get it done then let us know if the newer intercooler helps ya truck shift.
  3. My battery won't see out another winter so i'm thinking that i better get sorted soon and whilst i'm at it i'm looking at fitting 2 batterys and a split charge. Obviously my first place to look was x-eng. Like the batterys in the split charge kit, but thought the relay looked a bit small for 180A rating so did some research and found this .. http://www.smartgauge.co.uk/more_relay.html I'm not wanting a slagging match, just don't want a fire in the battery box when pulling from both batterys (engine running).
  4. How dya find out about these events though ??
  5. I just asked the same question last week .. Conclusion was that i bought an Armstrong one from paddocks for about £11.
  6. Got an armstrong steering damper from paddocks in the end. Was only a few quid and wow what a difference. My original was still damping but nowhere near as much as the new one. Thanx to all that replied.
  7. 200tdi's have got a little valve cap on top of the valve stem. Did you check these when you had the lid off ?
  8. Mine failed as well about a year ago. I fixed it and fixed it .. Oh and fixed it again. I take it to bits, find its already clean and adjusted, stick it back together and it works. I do have a bit of a leak from the rear of the transfer box but just the normal seal weep. Saturday morning saw me chasing after my van whilst trying to shut the yard gate. Straight on the phone to order an x-brake but x-eng was shut. So it'll be monday's job. So for you it sounds like you too will be asking yourself next year " why didn't i just get it sorted last year"
  9. I use Claaus premium tractor/ thresher oil from a farm machinery place that we use. It is excellent oil and well exceeds the spec's required for a tdi. And at £50 for 25lts it is much cheaper than most. I change the oil and filter every 3000 miles if i'm doing alot of heavy towing, and 4000 miles if its just been on the road as i believe this is the secret of a long lasting diesel engine.
  10. why not just fit a TD5 rear fuel tank and a changeover switch then there won't be an extra fuel pump to go wrong. Thats what i did
  11. Just ordered a genuine land rover one as i found that lrseries.com were selling them for £45. Bit more to pay but my van has gotta work. After reading another thread it made me realise that if this doesn't work then it may be drawing in air. I run from dual tanks and have the option to switch between both and both tanks seem to have the same problem so that seems to eliminate most of the pipework and back to the lift pump but time will tell. Thanks to all that answered.
  12. Got a cheapo lift pump for a 200tdi just before xmas cos thats all i could get in a hurry. Its died already, so what i want to know is where to get a good lift pump cheap and what make to look for/ not to get . TA
  13. Tyres are 235/85/16 so larger than standard but same as most td5's. I've not got any kind of juddering. When turning a corner it feels like the wheels are toeing in drastically so you kind of turn the wheel and the car turns then it kind of gets carried away and carry's on trying to turn. They aren't toeing in though and tyre wear is perfect.
  14. top pin and bush and bottom bearings on both sides have b een replaced recently in the search for this problem. I'm presuming i set the preloads properly.
  15. When doing road driving on road my steering is light and pulls the car about. For example a small pot hole will completely throw the van. or a reasonably small puddle will also drag the van into it. Whilst a small amount is expected, mine gets nearly out of control. I've had a look and the joints seem reasonable. The ball's have no leaks so the pre-loads must be reasonable. My next stage is the steering damper. When i looked at these there are loads to choose from priced anywhere between £10 and about £40. Which one do i get ?? Do you think i'm looking at the right part or could it be shocks ? How do i test both ?? TA
  16. I got both tanks fitted to my 200tdi. If ya look about half way down it shows ya fitting the rear tank .. http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopi...rt=#entry234087
  17. I got a '91 200tdi defender 90. I've converted it to run on veggie oil. Providing i'm not towing, it averages at around 28 to 29 mpg. I buy the same kind of veggie oil that you find in the supermarket and not that used but filtered stuff. That costs me about 55ppl. That puts me equivelent in cost to a diesel car delivering mid 50's to the gallon. If you're thinking of buying a defender then my advice is take your time and don't rush into it cos there are so many bad examples to choose from
  18. Have a look to see if there is oil leaking from the big silver ball. If so it could easily be the railko bushes. I just had to do mine for the same reason.
  19. Sorry missed that one. Forgot that the TD has a lucas pump.
  20. Depends on where ya get ya veggie oil from. I'm still only paying 55ppl, for fresh unused veggie oil, although i do buy in bulk. Last lot was 'crisp n dry' which seems to run really nicely.
  21. I agree with most but i would stick to 8mm pipe rather than using 10mm. It is well worth while using a heated filter for the veggie oil side otherwise the filters tend to wax easily. Both filters should be prior to the fuel pump as you have drawn, therefore they should be the suction priming type. I did a drawing when i converted my 200tdi .. http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopi...st=#entry273288 Yours can easily be made the same. Also may want to see this .. http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopi...rt=#entry234087 I think i posted some pics of everything fitted under the engine bay but can't find em. If you need to see the filters/ valves etc then let me know. Would recommend 2xtecalemit valves rather than pollock valves.
  22. I got this job done. I presume by now you have found the thread where i posted the pics etc. The tank itself is fairly cheap on ebay, but its all the other stuff that adds up. The sender unit for the tank aint cheap so if ya can get hold of one second hand then it will severely reduce costs. Any questions, then just ask.
  23. That's funny .. I remember having this discussion with the parts guy when i bought mine. Can't fully remember the outcome, but i did think that they dropped back to the old style pedal box due to the clutch pedal sticking to the floor issue with the 300tdi one. I do know that the TD5 is really heavy compared to mine though. Didn't you also do this mod with your 200tdi ? Anyone willing to take a photo of their clutch pedal on a TD5 ??????
  24. Another option would be to just fit a clutch pedal box out of a 300tdi. Part number ANR5311. This has a pedal assist spring which makes it much more car like.
  25. mine does that. I think it comes in on the joint in the roof and runs down and collects in the side gutters. Never really bothered me though. I'm lucky though cos the mrs and kids love the old defender. If i suggest taking the car anywhere then everyone sulks
