  3. Fairly often, in my rear view mirror - then they catch up and have to do 30mph like me! I've saved some of them from getting speeding tickets on my trips to work recently. There's a village on the way which most people absolutely fly through. I don't, and usually a fair few end up behind me. However, once every few weeks a policeman comes to hide behind a tree with his Gatso - and looks pretty cheesed off when I arrive after a big gap in the traffic doing bang on the speed limit. Anyone would think he was on a bonus scheme

  5. 235/70, iirc - but I think it varies a bit according to make. (A search of the old place would turn up an evening's reading on this subject!) The springs on mine are what's generally referred to as police spec in adverts, and I bought them because the originals were saggy. They're virtually standard height, or perhaps half an inch taller. I'd say they work better than standard springs both on and off road, and they're cheap I've had to trim the lip of the rear wheelarch slightly at the point where the rear door covers it, and still get occasional slight rubbing there and in the tops of the rear wheelarches. I had to adjust the lockstops a little too, so the turning circle is (unsurprisingly) about the same as my 110 - but not really a problem.
  6. That's pretty much what I use mine for, although less frequently than I'd like. I've removed the spoiler, fitted HD springs and recovery points and use 235/85 MTs on Disco rims (probably overkill as noted above - but the extra clearance under the diff is nice to have). Waterproof nylon seatcovers are also worth having, especially if you have cloth trim - much easier to clean. You might want to think about some Sumo bars to avoid bending a track rod in the middle of nowhere - and maybe some protection for the front diff. I've got all that stuff in the shed, but haven't been bothered to fit it yet - just means I have to keep an eye where I'm going Just out of interest, where's your LPG tank? If it's underneath, what are the chances of it getting knocked off it's mountings?

  10. Trouble is, the Tdi doesn't chuck out much heat (certainly not compared to a V8) and the radiator is sized to cope with stuff like towing a heavy trailer in hot weather. I worried a lot about overheating the engine, but found that cutting three 100mm holes in the baffle (and only fitting it when the weather is cold) resulted in the temperature gauge behaving as if it was summer - it didn't go much over half way, and the heater worked. Two holes gave a nice quick warm up, but the temperature would get higher than I felf comfortable with on the motorway. With no holes at all, I think the cheque book would be out very soon.

  12. Probably worth mentioning here that there are two types of fuel burning heater: - engine preheaters; these live under the bonnet and heat the coolant. Iirc, they're fitted to some TD5 vehicles to help the standard heater do its job. As the name suggests, they can be used to preheat the engine, avoiding cold starts. - cab heaters; these live in the passenger compartment and blow out hot air. Reputed to be toastier than the other type, and look like a cylinder vacuum cleaner scaled down to (roughly) the size of a 2 litre Coke bottle. Mine makes a noise like a rocket at take off, so I've bought it a tiny exhaust silencer to avoid frightening passers by!
  13. Slip a baffle down the front of the radiator once the weather gets cold; it improves things no end, but you need to keep one eye on the temperature gauge when on the motorway. I made mine out of lino, and it ties on to the top of the radiator housing with wire. (It's a slapdash copy of a nice aluminium one made by simonr ) You'll need to make 3 round holes of 100mm diameter to allow a bit of cooling - they're best arranged in a triangle so that they're not all cooling the same waterways. More expensive alternatives are: - fit a blind to the front of the radiator grille - the magazines often have an ad for ex-military ones for about £50. - buy a fuel burning heater (like a lorry night heater) - they're made by Eberspacher or Webasto, and are fairly pricey even secondhand. I got mine off ebay for reasonable money because it was mid summer, and really must get round to fitting it (I said that last year too - at the moment it heats my shed)
  14. A tiny modification that I've found very useful: mine has a ladder on the back, a remnant of a previous owner's roofrack. I attached a steel plate to the top step using U bolts so I'd have somewhere to fix a magmount aerial - but it's turned out to be very convenient if you need to put anything small (e.g. tools) down for a moment whilst hunting for the back door key. (It's also the ideal place to stand a mug of tea )

  17. Thanks - so it does sound like the axle might be waggling around a little and wearing out my grrrrrangemasters Might think about some harder bushes at some point - once I've finally fitted all the bits that came back from Billing!
  18. Out of interest, do knackered radius arm bushes result in unusual tyre wear? When viewed from the side, the tread blocks on both my back tyres (Avon Rangemasters) have worn in a slight sawtooth pattern round one edge. I've seen similar wear on other 110s, but can't see what's causing it on mine. Could one of my radius arm bushes have gone a bit soft?

  20. I suspect some vehicles may be more prone to it than others. My Su**ki has been sat for a couple of years but still starts and runs fine - but then it always was boringly reliable Frost have this stuff, which looks like what you're after. I believe my local motor factor sells something similar, albeit in a much smaller bottle - might be worth enquiring with yours.
