  1. just to get it in early, morning Dave... Mark
  2. You can get replacement brackets, but they involve cutting the old ones off first.... I have a couple at home, which came from MPS 4x4 via eBay. image blatantly stolen from this listing on eBlag:
  3. I think I am now suffering exactly the same set of symptoms as Thys on my 300... Having just done the head gasket, I suspected the water pump and/or the thermostat, so replaced both of those as well, but am still getting overheating issues. tonight I took the truck out and it got hot, then it cooled down and stayed at the right temp, then it got hot again, and then cooled down, before getting hot and staying hot. Intersting thing was that the heater in the car was hot when the car was at the right temperature, and stone cold when it was off the scale... :S Any ideas? Les, is that tester kit commonly available? might try and test the coolant for exhaust gas.... sorry for the thread hijack...
  4. I am in the process of building a set of drawers for my disco. Given the tendency of discoveries to leak, and my tendancy to dunk it into ponds, I avoided any wood whatsoever. In the disco you have much wider space to play with, so mine will be 2 drawers side by side. they are almost the full depth of the discovery boot, and are slghlty less wide than the gap between the wheel arches - This is so they can be attached to the load rail that runs the length of the floor. The gaps at the side will be used to take jerry cans and/or toolboxes. Currently I have a steel box section frame made of 20mm square ERW. I also have 2 drawer frames, made of the same stuff, which are then to be clad in 3mm and 1mm ally - 3mm bottom and front, and 1mm sides. The top of the main frame will be clad in 3mm ally too. runners are accuride 75kg rated ones that I found in a scrap yard, and handles are from southco. I can post a couple of pics up of the progress so far if anyone is interested?
  5. Thanks for the confirmations chaps, a new pump and 'stat have been aquired (along with possibly another forum member from the parts dept at Hunters in Guildford!) so we will see what the old one looks like tonight... Cheers for the heads up Mo...
  6. Having bought the new Disco with a blown head gasket, I set about replacing it, which is all now done... Without knowing much of the history of the truck I figured I would fix the head gasket, and figure out why it went once it was running. So, now it's running and it is running exceedingly hot - I think this is why the head gasket went. The temp guage is off the scale, but the heaters are not pumping any heat out in the car and the hoses to the heater matrix are stone cold, so I currently suspect that that water pump is knackered. This, coupled with a very high pitch squeel from the pump itself, seems to condemn it. I also wonder if it is just the thermostat, so I will replace that too, but could someone confirm that this is a viable diagnosis? Thanks Mark
  7. Just after I got it, with no MoT, no Sills, and no Boot floor... looks tidy enough though :S.. This was at 7 Sisters last year, but no big changes since... and given some terminal rust issues, a blown engine, and a bit of a change of use, it is about to undergo some changes... [not particularly artistic impression]
  8. Might be useful to put your location in your profile - it's no use recomending a garage in glasgow when you are in southampton... I have done this on my 200 disco (and on Orange's Rangie) and it is not an easy thing to quote for sadly. Equally, if I were to do it again, I would not replace like for like - I would use an old aluminium range rover floor, which is likely something a garage would be less happy to do. it's always worth an ask though!
  9. Oh, that's OK then.... why didn't you say so
  10. lol, more traditionally known as Window Shopping....
  11. Pete, just had a good read through the link you posted. I need to replace a few pipes anyway, so that all makes loads of sense... The truck is a P reg Jap import, and yes, it is an EDC model. At the moment my plan is to run it a little while and see what happens... I may well be picking your brains though. Cheers Mark
  12. Yep, an EGR valve is present... Cheers for the link pete, 300's are all new to me! Marmite is a pretty good description of the link actually, so it looks like the EGR is stuck open.... does blanking it off have any detrimental effects? ta Mark
  13. I have taken the Head off the new Discovery - a 96 plate 300TDI Auto. When I rempved the pipes form the intercooler to the intake manifold, the inside is covered in black oily sludge... This dosn't seem entriley right to me. There are several possible routes for oil to be in the air intake that I can think of - Crank case pressure is venting into the air intake - The bearings are knackered on the turbo, and letting oil into the air side - The previous owner didn't know which hole to stick oil into.... Any suggestions? Should I be looking at getting the turbo rebuilt/replaced? or is this normal, and my paranoya on all things mechanical just kicking in? Cheers Mark
  14. My dads is terrible, and desperate for replacing, but I am not surprised at 240k miles.... doesn't sound uncommon though...
  15. Agreed, we did very similar - The ECU was only replaced when we came to move the vehicle at the end of the day - and coincidentally, when a lot of the pictures were taken.
  16. Were the North Offroad ones an off the shelf item, or a special fabrication? I have never seen them advertised? Cheers Mark
  17. John, Thats probably the cheapest route, but building the bus for one side isn't the easiest or neatest solution, unless you happen to know of any ready build bussing products? When I have built big Mains distro's (single and 3 phase) using standard breakers, you can get bus bars that screw into the terminals, but I don't know of anything similar for smaller use, say with a 6.4mm spade connector on... any ideas?
  18. The picture I posted came from Merlin Equipment who essentially supply stuff for boats - hence the fish finder supply... If you PM Matthew on here, he might be able to help Shame it's not a 'fish and chips finder' ... Orange, ask Mike too...
  19. Al, I think it's more of an issue of finding a neat fuse holder that also acts as a bus bar - most automotive fuse holders I have seen are simply a bank of fuse holders with a terminal on each one. I think Mr Orange might be after something like this: Which has a single feed in, and 6 out (although a 12 way one is also available) Problem is theya re £25 tho... Mark
  20. Moved to International forum, as it will get more response, and you then don't need to cross post in all the vehicle specific forums...
  21. It would be even more obvious if you filled in your location on your profile... On a 1.8, the cat is part of the manifold, and they would have to work hard to get it out. I guess it is further back on a diesel?
  22. Yeah, the ally floor fits perfectly into a steel floored Rangie - I am sure you have seen this, but here's what we did on my brothers rangie: Floor and cross member replacement
  23. Adrian, I also have a spare off a disco that you can borrow if required... Mark
  24. 3 hours is a bit quick for a bump isn't it? Why not have a search on this site about albrights and the chinese copies? You might even find the thread about some testing that was carried out on them... Essentially though they are well thought of and do the job well. hth
