qball
Hello, After replacing the axle half shaft seal in the swivel ball on my defender Td5. upon fixing back the stub axle the entire swivel housing is sieze. it cannot swing. Is there something wrong with my installation. Installation method. 1. Changed axle shaft seal in swivel ball. 2. tighten swivel ball back to axle housing 3. install swivel housing using shorter top pivot screws 4. insert new axle shaft and cv joint. ( axle shaft had a groove at the seal area and the cv joint broke while removing) 5. fix on stub axle. at this stage the entire swivel housing is siezed. any advice what is the problem? regards Jack
Eightpot
Did you put the shims back in on the top swivel pin?
qball
yes I did. the swivel housing swings freely with the axle shaft and cv joint inside. but the moment I tighten up with the stub axle it freezes up.
dailysleaze
Have you pulled the CV joint through the stub axle as far as it'll go? It is floating until the hub and drive member go on and hold it with a circlip
Mo Murphy
Yup the cv is not properly seated. Take it apart again 😉 Mo
Les Brock
sounds like above, not seated correctly, you should a a bit of end float to shim out
qball
i guess I would have to remove everything again. the last time I did the same job. I took out the swivel housing together with the stub axle still bolted on and put back the same way. then I did the shimming of the top pivot bearing. I will try this method again. landroversforever
Just take the stub axle off, pull the shaft and CV together. You can then check the CV is seated properly on the shaft. Not sure about the TD5 but I know my '84 axle has a spacer on the shaft before the CV goes on. From memory I think that would lock the CV as the shaft can go too far into the CV bell. qball
i had loosen the top pivot bearing. the swivel is swings good and there is end float to the axle shaft . now I just have to shim it up.
