Debender
Hi, iv been driving my 200tdi 90 around recently and noticed a new noise coming form around the gearbox it sound like what I would imagine a loose bearing would sound like. metal on metal grinding. It comes and goes but only when driving (never when idling). Any advice would be greatly appreciate

Snagger
I agree with Ralph that they are likely the culprit. Other possibilities are a faulty starter motor, flywheel ring gear or clutch release bearing.

fmmv
What they said. Or even the handbrake binding on.
Snagger
The clutch release bearing would likely change in noise considerably when pushing the clutch pedal down or releasing it. A bad starter or ring gear should vary in tone with engine rpm rather than road speed. Something in the gear box is going to be subject to road speed and gear selection. A prop shaft issue (usually the UJs) or diff problem will be subject to road speed and torque but not gear or engine rpm.

steve b
Check the front wheel bearings too - if slack enough the disc will scrape the dirt guard. Front prop is no. 1 suspect , best checked by removing it to get a proper feel of the UJ bearings Steve

Is possible, but if you can feel it in the brake pedal too. The tumbling disk will spread the brake pads and you will have to allign them with the pedal bevore the brake works. Is there a stone between brake guard and disk?
Dave9252
If its behind the dash, then check your speedo cable. If its worn itself loose then it'll give you a spinning/ grinding noise.
