17 Bowlers + some LRs (not specified)...and one driver with an Hummer!

Expect to see some more TV footage of the event than usual...

TV footage here is usually close to 0 (zero) thanks to the soccer mafia...

I'd definitely like to see some more.

(period!)

Eurosport every day 1hr slot repeated troughout the day throughout the 17day event but if you don't have Sky your out of luck.

I also heard that Richard Hammond is driving one and TopGear will be doing 10 min slot each show during the event. ???

He is on the list two names below Paul Green my mate from Bournmouth

If anyone can record the episodes onto DVD for me, I'll supply the discs and PAY for the effort/hassle.

Anyone...?

No, I'm not interesting enough to have a strong opinion on the subject. The only option in my craphole apartment was 6 terrestrial French channels of utter drivel (no, not even any decent porn...), and the reception of those was snowy at best, so I asked the landlady to remove the TV and I don't pay the licence fees (I'm in France by the way).

I honestly don't miss it, I can rent DVDs or watch my own on my computer. I sometimes miss British comedies and the news, and possibly the odd documentary, and...

No it's actually much easier than I thought it would be - I never really notice, and I still don't have enough time...

So, you wanna do some DVDs for me?! :)

>"TV footage here is usually close to 0 (zero) thanks to the soccer mafia..." - Right on Michele - it sucks, the lack of variety and the amount of football. I know, I know, it's all about money...

By the way - the 'hummer' is driven by Robby Gordon (1st time last year, but BIG in the States), it's only the bodyshell pretty much as I understand it. Expect it to do well, possibly win.

There's a report on the rally every evening, barely comprehensible though, on one of the main channels [6! you parisians don't know how lucky you are, honestly, us provincials only get 4 — 1,2,3,5 — now when I were a lad our dad used to whip us to sleep, have I told you how cold it gets here.. ]

There's a gizmo Hauppauge sell that allows you to watch telly on the computer, although as you say, French terrestrial telly is mostly such drivel that mine now sits waiting for its chance to convert video camera pictures to a .png every once in a while.

I counted 19 Bowler entries, never realized that many people were doing the PD in a Bowler.

Fair play to the Bowler boys though, they must be working bloody hard

The backup must be crippling trying to cart round enough spares and mechanics etc to look after that lot as I bet most of them want support packages.

Very nice to see a success story and they deserve it just for engineering quality alone :)

Lara.

What does a Bowler cost these days?

Dakar spec Bowler you will look at around £100k + support(£100 per Kg) + fuel (£4 per gallon over 11,000km) + entry (£7K)

I think they do Hire drive which is a little cheaper but not much.

Rally Raid UK will do a team supported car for around £70k + fuel + entry I think its around that mark

Bowler Go Raid Team Dakar support is run by Keith Banyard and Keith Got.

I use to pit for Banyard years ago from Bournmouth and Got is in Alton.

Yes good for them. The cars seem to perform very well.

Cheers Andy - I'll pester you later...

MarkieB - I dunno, is having 6 channels of carp better than having 4 channels of carp...?!?:D

Jules - I have entry up around 20k per vehicle and 2.5k per person (or more?). I'd love to be wrong about this, but 7k total seems VERY low...? Do the vehicle prices include the vehicle entry fees, if so our figures would agree. (My figures could be euros - can't remember off hand).

Starting in Portugal this year, so I can't go and see them all driving down the Champs Elysee... :(

Cheers, Al.

The I was due to drive service this year but could not secure work after the event so I could not do it.

£7k per person serice more as a racer and there is a charge for the car it works out that the guy I was going with reconed it was around the £160-180K it cost him his car and for his support car as well with people paying to drive the service car.

I am working from memory of last years paper work for this years event

Oh yeah - it's about 10k euros per person, plus say 5k for the car. Got me figures the wrong way round...

So, 25k euros fees for a 2-man car. Service vehicles effectively double the fees... Ouch.

So there's just one service truck for all those entries??? Doesn't seem enough, somehow.

Christ on a bike!

I wonder what their budget is...? :o

Perhaps they get a 'bulk discount' on the fees!?! :)

Remember Drew telling me Nissan's nightime service area lighting rig one year cost more than Bowlers entire race budget!

Bowler reckons on £60K £80k for a entry.

Dakar's hidden costs are legendary. You pay for everything and anything. A classic one is having to pay for all your fuel up front. That means having to work out how much you think you'll need and at which fuel dump you're going to need it. Crash out on the first bend, you can kiss all your fuel money goodbye!!

I have heard people throw figers around of £15k for fuel and as you say if you crash day one you kiss that all goodbye.

Rally Raid Uk have people the work on the event but you have to pay them :o:o to go.

I have also heard that Richard Hammond has lost his backing for the event I don't know how ture that is.

Sad to say, another miserable UK entry again in the car category with just three Brit crews registered … and one of those is ‘The Hamster’ / Terry Banyard who as stated might not even make the start line. The one and only UK truck entry is Team Bowler. Bikes are much better though with no less than 12 UK entries!

Another positive is the sizeable amount of UK Rally Raid entries. Granted, the majority of their participants may be foreign, but at least there is some sort of British interest in the challenge.

Come on the Bowler’s!!!
