draper40
Hey, How do you lift out a 200tdi engine- I have an engine hoist? Are there any lifting points? What length tree strops are needed? Pete
Milemarker Type S
Should be two lifting eyes bolted to the engine at the top- one at the front just behind the small heater hose and one at the back just in front of the heater plug relay. Should just need a couple of shackles and a short piece of chain to attach it to the crane. Not sure but depending on which crane you have you might have to remove the radiator and slam panel as you may not be able to lift th engine high enough to clear it. lrfarmer
if you've never lifted an engine out it may pay to remove the radiator and slam panel you dont want to nock the rad as you lift it out i dont have a engine hoist but i have one of these
draper40
Already got the front off in preparation for saturday! I can't seem to find the lifting points, is it possible they have been removed? What would I do then? Pete
Eightpot
They dont look anything special, just flat plate with a hole in it bolted to the block, one at the front one at the back. If they've been removed for some reason I'd use a tow strop passed around the engine front and back making sure nothing vulnerable will get squashed when it's lifted and it's good and secure, and pass it through a shackle to the crane hook. western
Lifting brackets are items 17 & 19 & 21 on this parts diagram & 2 photo's from my Defender spec 200Tdi, I've had this engine from new & it only has the front & rear lift eyes fitted. both are bolted to the cylinder haed not the block. draper40
What size strop would be needed if there are no lifting points? Pete
Eightpot
It would need to be long enough to make a four point sling if you know what I mean - one end hooked on crane hook/shackle, passed under engine and back up to the shackle, then back down under the front of the block and back up secured to the shackle. Not the best way to do it as you won't be able to adjust the angle as it comes out and goes back in very easily, and there is a risk of damage - use wooden blocks against the side of the engine to keep the strop away from pipes/lift pump etc. I'd also get the rad and front panel removed if you do it this way so you dont have to lift it very much. If you can order the lifting points from craddocks or somewhere it might be easier though, and probably a bit safer.
draper40
Does the bellhousing and gearbox need to come off first? Pete
Ex Member
No, just unbolt and pull off the engine. It is pretty simple. With the rad and support off, there is lots of room to play.
LandyManLuke
I'd make lifting eyes rather than use a strop, saves damaging anything.
draper40
I will try and get/make some pointys but just in case will 2x2metre strops and 2x3metre strops do the job? Pete
western
they should be long enough
draper40
Justed ordered some strops and 5 shackles from winch solutions- can never have enough shackles! Peter
mike4444244
Hi Make sure you have the strop as shot as possible or you may find you run out of travel on the crane! also when you have it out get it lowered before you go dragging it off as it will be much more stable! draper40
If you want the gearbox out as well is it better to leave them connected of take them out separately? Pete
BigMac1
If you want them both out I'd lift them out together. Just try putting part of your sling near the bellhousing to help distribute the weight. Saves undoing all the bellhousing bolts while there on the car. I think I read your taking the slam panel and rad out? If not I'd be tempted to split it as you could damage the rad. Good luck! Edited because I can't spell.....
draper40
I've taken the engine out easily enough and now it is clear what as happened. There is a large hole in the casing and most of cyclinder no.1 in the sump!! Oh dear! Pete
western
sorry to read that Pete, 200Tdi's are fairly plentiful from old Discovery's, so you should find a good 2nd hand engine fairly quickly.
