Badger90
My new 110 has a Capstan Winch. What are the pros and cons of these and are they worth anything?Any info appreciated... i believe that capstans are used more and better used for logging and light recovery. only thing is with the rope you have on it need to be wraped 2-3 times round and it doent wrap it around like a drum winch. you need to pull on the rope that isnt being used to keep it tight.. not to sure of the value.. hope what i know helps cheers sam
western
If you can obtain a copy of 'Winching in Safety' by LR, it has good info on how to use various winches including Capstan winches. 2 copies here on ebay HM Coastguard used to use these for cliff rescue work, most of their 90's had them factory fitted. seem to be using demountable/portable versions now. BogMonster
Very specific requirement to be truly useful, Coastguard is one and another common one is pulling cables through ducting for telecoms companies etc as you can use several hundred feet of rope with no problem. AFAIK you can't now buy a new capstan winch to fit a Defender as a complete kit (I tried to get one for a customer at work a year or so back) so they are probably worth a fair bit to somebody who needs one!! Superwinch used to make one, don't know of any others.
ThreeSheds
There is a complete one on eBay at £350 'buy-it-now' - but whether it's worth that - well I guess if you watch it and see if it sells you'll know Rog
Drizz
Yeah already watching that, im guessing thats well over priced!
Orgasmic Farmer
Yep, my mate has one lying unloved in the corner of his yard. Not sure how complete it is (main plate and winch is there but not sure of drive shafts, I can ask) but would be real cheap if someone wanted to take a chance
Drizz
Well mine will be removed and sold cheap too...
dirkthe1
we use them at work for pulling over trees. they are quite good, but a bit old school, as we use the boughton and extraction winch more

Yup, we've now got much smaller versions, still capstan though. they're on a base plate that can be staked down or mounted on to a towbar / 2" hitch. Obviously no where near as powerful, but more flexible.
