adam300Tdi90
Besides brute force and ignorance (which i've tried and tried again) how on earth do you get the old a frame ball joint out?!? I've tried pressing it and got up to 6tonnes of pressure (nothing), I've also tried heating the surrounding a-frame with oxy/acetalene. Theres got to be another way!!! Please help, I keep running into brick walls like this doing my rebuild!
cieranc
Mate if you've got the use of gas and a press it MUST come out! I held mine in the vice and knocked it out with a hammer and drift after warming the carrier with the gas. Just get the carrier red hot right around it, it'll give in eventually. BogMonster
Silly question (I hope) - but you did cut the two tabs off the joint you are trying to press out - i.e. you are pressing one side on the joint and the other side on the carrier bracket and not on the body of the joint? Les Henson
First time I tried to press an old ball joint out I forgot to cut the tabs off - felt kinda stupid when I realised Les.
BogMonster
Me too - I think most people do it but usually only once!
101sean
The one I had changed a year or so ago took 30T to shift but that was after I'd tried beating out resulting in it tipping slightly
LandyManLuke
I don't have a press, so I drilled mine out. Took a while but then I wasn't in a rush.
rusty_wingnut
i got mine out with mild heating and big old club hammer.
dantd5
Have plans on changing the A frame on mine but these stories keeps me off the task One day I might have the patience to get it done...
101sean
Getting the carrier off is easy enough, just need a mate with a press or hand some beer tokens to a garage.
adam300Tdi90
thanks everyone, the guys that run the workshop next to mine have a press but it's 'only' rated to 10 tons, i went away and left it for few days. i must admit the first time i was silly enough to not cut away part of the tabs so there was something to press against, but i did realise a good few hours before posting here! i sqirted the top side with wd40 and took a brave pill. the press got up to 9.5 tons on the dial and i thought it wasn't gonna budge, then i pressed it once more and BANG! hurrah! i'm now wondering, how do I press in the new one?! don't wanna pay any one, or damage the new one...! Les Henson
Use the 2 M8 bolts to align it, then a large socket/suitable tubing over tapered end and then press it in. Les.
rusty_wingnut
I fitted mine with copper ease. probably not reccomended but it took a fair bit of pressing and hasn't gone anywhere in 6 months
Allan Soffientini
A mate pressed the ball joint out of my 90 using a 20 t press and was an hard job. Impressed to read about people doing this work only with heat , vice and hammer; perhaps mine was very hard due to old age and a bit of rust.
