Long term effects of remapping TD5?

I've recently bought a 2001 Discovery TD5 Auto ES and after reading lots here & elsewhere am considering having it remapped to stage 1 (probably by IRB Developments - if I can get Ian to answer my emails......).

But I'm a bit concerned about long term reliability as I want to keep the car for at least 5 years or so. Has anybody here got good experience of several 10s of thousands of miles after a remap?

my dads was by a local Land Rover specialist and it had done 20,000 afte, probably a bit more. unsure as now sold. never had any problems with it. the remap meant more power so he wasnt booting it everywhere which meant more MPG.

great IMO and did 0-60 in about 9 seconds-ish

To be realistic, you will cause additional wear to the engine and turbocharger, but it would be an infantesimal amount, and i'd imagine you'd only really notice once you've done interstellar mileage.

It might mean the difference between changing the turbo at 200k and changing it at 150k

The gains are WELL worth that difference though.

All I can add to this is that the remap will accentuate any existing wear in the engine.

Before he did mine, Ian (of IRB fame) ran a check to see how healthy the injectors etc were. I also had the EGR removed, a de-cat downpipe and an air filter added to the package. In my opinion, doing the map witout the additions would be pointless as the main restriction on the system is the Cat.

Ian also accompanied me on a post-mapping test run with the diagnostics plugged in to check that all was in order before I left for home...

And just to add that mine has since passed it's MOT without the Cat on....

Thanks for the responses - it is becoming more attractive by the minute.

As mine is a 2001 it doesn't have a cat to de-cat. It runs very well, starts instantly and is smooth (I did find some oil in the red plug and cleaned it out thoroughly - new injector loom is in the offing).

If I can get Ian to reply to my emails I'll go round & see him.......

I did my 02 Defender 130 a year and a half ago, 2 stage remap with bigger intercooler and straighr thru

exhaust, have done between 25 and 30,000 miles since and not a problem at all and I wouldn't have the lightest

right foot in the world either, I'm going the whole way after christmas with the sport upgrade 215 BHP (new

flywheel and clutch needed)
