Disty
The three bolts which attach the a-frame bracket to the chassis on a defender. What size and length are these bolts? Do I need HT steel ones?
Aragorn
They're 10.9 grade M10's From memory, two are 55mm and the other four are 35mm or so, i'll check microcat shortly to confirm.
Disty
Ah, you're the Audi V8 guy! Impressed with your "work in progress", looks awesome!! My rebuild is somewhat more tame! What about these two: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/M10-x-55-BLACK-HEX-HEAD-BOLTS-10.9-HIGH-TENSILE-4-PCS_W0QQitemZ150363523900QQcmdZViewItem and http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/M10-x-35-FINE-THREAD-1.25mm-HEX-HEAD-BOLT-BLACK-10.9-X4_W0QQitemZ150442676280QQcmdZViewItem
Disty
Also, the chassis is threaded right, so no need for nuts? What about washers? Yay or nay?
Aragorn
Ok, seems the shorter ones are 45mm not 35. The chassis isnt threaded, so you'll need to fit nuts and washers. The OEM parts are BX110111L (x2) for the long bolts, BX110091L (x4) for the shorter ones, WC110067L (x12) for the washers and NY110051L (x6) for the nuts. The ebay links are pretty expensive, you can buy the bolts from britcar for much less money.
LandyManLuke
Or a nuts/bolts supplier, they'll be even cheaper still!!!
Retroanaconda
Just make sure they're 10.9 or stronger, most places will supply 8.8 by default I have found
LandyManLuke
By default yes, because a decent place won't stock Chocolate fixings. You'll have to ask for anything different, but that's what you'll get - no problems.
Disty
Thanks so much guys, you're all super chaps! I've managed to locate a bolt supplier that's open tomorrow and has the right stuff in, so I'll go get them! I presume 50mm will do where 45 is required? He didn't have any 45's in.. Aragorn
generally bolts have a threaded section thats a specific length for its diameter, so a 5mm longer bolt will have 5mm more "shank" and the same amount of threads on it. This means you might find the shank protrudes too far, depending on how close the original part was.
Disty
Thinking about it (I'm not with my car bits now) I don't even know how you get the bolts in that section- Isn't that crossmember solid!? How on earth do you get the nuts and washers in and then hold them there? I'll get some 5mm longer and if the shank is too long, I'll take them back, that way I can at least start fitting... Aragorn
They bolt onto bits that stick off the sides of the crossmember
Disty
I'm sorry Aragorn, but I completely fail to understand what you mean!? This is what we're talking about right? Surely I need to get a washer and nut inside that section of the chassis? Am I being completely thick?
jbs
Disty, a bit thick i think mate the A frame brackets fit onto the chassis cross member where the bit in the pic at the other end of where the axle is ie where the two black A frame bars meet the chassis , You'll find on there that there is three places on each side for the A frame bars ,where the bolt holes are to accomodate the A frame to the chassis and don't forget this is a pic of the top of the chassis and not the underneath, See the pic i got from the net to see where the A frame attaches to the chassis then you'll see where the A frame meets the chassis is where the nut's and bolts go to too HTH John
western
The three bolts which attach the a-frame bracket to the chassis on a defender. What size and length are these bolts? Do I need HT steel ones? look on page 439/440 here
Disty
Uh, no- I know exactly where the holes are- that isn't the problem. What I'm trying to ascertain is how you get any nuts on the other side of said holes. Thanks though.
western
IIRC the nuts/bolt heads are all accessible, if you look at the parts page I've linked to, one bolt is head up & the other is head down [same on each side]
Disty
Sweet. I got 40mm and 50mm bolts as the guy didn't have any 45's in 10.9. Hopefully they'll do the job. Thanks western- well spotted. That PDF was incredibly helpful.. THANKS!
western
no probs, just bookmark the parent website which belongs to Mr Retroanaconda on here
Aragorn
That photo is not a landrover chassis, its from marslands, and it doesnt use the tripod brackets at all. If you look at the crossmember, you'll see the bits hanging down which the A-Frame just attaches directly to. No idea why they've ditched the tripod brackets, as i had a bit of a double take at i myself when i went to attach my shiney powdercoated brackets! If you see an original chassis you'll see the bosses for the bolts to go thru.
Disty
Turns out the shorter bolts did the trick. For anybody else who might read this, I got away with 40mm instead of 45mm. And of course, the mounts are either side of the crossmember- i was looking at a marslands chassis by mistake!!
landrover598
No idea why they've ditched the tripod brackets, It's called production engineering. Getting rid of unnesesary, complex and expensive parts to save time and money in manufacture and assembly, a great idea
