Carbs to EFi feasibility

Like it says in the title really; interested in the feasibility of swapping from carbs to EFi.

I did a search, but unfortunately EFi is an invalid search term!

I'm guessing i'd need a different fuel pump, possibly a different tank with a return pipe?

Then the brain, manifold, injectors, throttle position sensor and all the gubbins to megasquirt it.

My truck has only done 45k from new, so it's an ideal candidate i guess...

Hmm, sounds like a scary (and expensive) prospect though.

Thoughts/comments/advice please.

You'll need a high-pressure fuel pump (£10 upwards on eBay, £40 for a Jag external one) and return-to-tank line.

Last EFI setup I bought I paid £10 for a 3.9 top end - inlet manifold, fuel rail, injectors, fuel rail, pressure regulator, plenum, sensors etc. and it's a nuts-and-bolts jobby to swap over. You may need to fettle air intake pipes and throttle cable.

You don't need a 3.9 setup, but if you can get the later type (injectors clamped down by fuel rail) it's nicer than the early ones (injectors have a little hose crimped on the end).

Once you've got that bit, have a read of Nige's Megasquirt thread as that pretty much picks up the story from here.

Thanks Fridge.

I've been through Nige's thread and on his website, and he very kindly pm'd me his phone number so i can ring him for a chat.

Doing a conversion like this is about as far out of my comfort zone as i like to be. Engine swaps are easy, but this electronic work of satan is just a whole new ball game!

Do i need to change the fuel tank for one that has two fuel lines so i can have a return fuel line?

Depends really, I don't know what your tank looks like but sometimes you can swap the fuel pickup pipe bit for a diesel version which has a return, or bodge something in through the vent pipe or suchlike.

While we're on the subject: Most EFI pumps are good at pressure but no good at lifting fuel from the tank, you may need either an in-tank pump or external lift pump feeding the pressure pump, a carb-type facet pump or similar will be fine for this job.

EFI Heads have a little "Blip" on the chamber (see the pis in the V8 porn thread)

however I have known many engines conveted / built with EFI using non efi heads and nobody ever knew

Not thus sure what real effect these blips have ?

Heads from EFI engines onwards, which was around 1986 ish

isn't the fuel return built into the pump/sender unit on the v8 injection? i seem to remember it all being connected through the top of the unit on my old disco.

Dunc, why not pop down to docklow, he's got plenty of old landrovers lying about, bound to be an efi range rover in there somewhere, or at least a disco.

Yeah, Rob has an unmentionable amount of carp around down there, i'd thought of seeing what he could dig out. I worked for him years ago to help pay for a partial engine rebuild.

17:43, just woken up... if i can get up early tomorrow i'll nip down to see him. Uuuuuurgghh work in a couple of hours...
