gazelle
Bit of a basic question, but what is meant by the term "backlash"? It has been used in a number of threads recently, but I am not fully clear what it is. Can somebody please explain to me what it is, and what the symptoms are please. Cheers
rtbarton
Basically it's play or lost movement between two connected items, such as splines in a differential or slackness between two gears. It can be caused by wear, in which case it is "excessive backlash" or designed in, for example to allow oil to get between the teeth of gears. Retroanaconda
Front diff backlash in all it's glory: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bR5FmjXXKJ0 FYI: Front axle will generally have more backlash than the rear as there are more splined joints which accumulate to more play overall.
