need4speed
Started fitting new wiper wheelboxes to my bulkhead. After fitting them I noticed a problem. There is a bracket on the bulkhead that will get in the way of the cable and tube. I was told that the new bulkhead was a TD5 one so what's going on here? Orgasmic Farmer
Maybe they fit upside-down on the TD5?? The bracket doesn't look like the one I had to modify to make them fit on my one ten bulkhead.
Maverik
they do fit upside down on a td5 bulkhead as the wiper motor is in a different position its actually mounted higher up and the drive cable/spring is shorter. Mav
need4speed
Thanks mav. That clears that up. Does that mean that the tube that the drive cable runs in is also different?
cackshifter
Something I can add on wipers is that I had very slow wipers which I realised was due to using too much grease . I was looking into all sorts of alternative motors etc, then decided to try reducing the internal friction. I found some stuff called Super Lube (don't search for it while anyone's looking, as you will get many hits!) which is water resistant, not very thick and PTFE loaded. I have used this on the gears in the motor and on the cable, and can report a big improvement in speed. The wipers are now faster on a dry screen than they were on wet (still not very fast, but it's taken years off them). It's sold on ebay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SUPER-LUBE-Synthetic-Grease-Syncolon-PTFE-3-oz-/200592473493?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2eb43e3d95 ; I think it's US in origin, Sherline reported they have used it on their lathes as they find it makes a big improvement. It's not cheap but one tube would easily do 2 vehicles. I had to clean out the cable by cleaning the inner and replacing it, and repeating till it was coming out more or less clean. I then greased the inner sparingly, shoved it back, and pulled it out a few times, and then regreased it where the grease had gone, but emphasis on a thick smear rather than loads of it filling the cable, leaving some air gaps. Maverik
Yes the drive cable is shorter. I got a td5 bulkhead with all the bits so didn;t have to fiddle this bit, but it may be possible to shorten the drive cable to fit. - have you got a later td5 center dash to go in it too? western
the drive cable can be cut with big snip or pliers or a cable cutter.
need4speed
Mav I don't have a centre dash as yet. Not really at that stage yet. Ralph thanks for the info. Looks like I need to cut my drive cable down a bit.
western
wait until the wiper system is fully installed & working, then you can crop off the excess which protrudes from the tube when the cable is working, I cropped mine so the free end was just inside the tube. need4speed
But surely when its all built up and working I won't be able to get at the cable to cut it? Do you mean temporarily fitting wiper controls before fitting rest of dash etc? Sorry for my ignorance.
western
Yes you can do it that way, IIRC the drive tube end can be accessed with the dash top off.
need4speed
Ahh I see. So I can go ahead and assemble everything but just leave the dash top off. Thanks for the tips Ralph.
landroversforever
When I did mine the cable was far too long, even for the old style mounting position. I trimmed it with a pair of snips with the dash top off
