Plastic Fuel Pipe

Recommended Posts

Trouble is, Mike, it comes in different sizes depending on model & year. 3/8 and 5/16" for return are common, but so are 3/8" for both, 8 and 10mm. I doubt a local specialist will know precisely.

I would also like to know for definite so I know what size fittings to supply with the X-Eng fuel lock about to launch. Nobody has been able to tell me anything more precise than "you'll have to measure it to be certain".

I got mine on eBay. It was imperial on mine 5/16 and 3/8, that's on a 1984 spec fuel tank from a 90 and a 1995 300TDi engine. You do need the exact size, 10mm pipe wont work on a fitting designed for 3/8 pipe.

To fit the unions I drilled a hole to suit the pipe in a hard wood block. Cut the block in half through the hole to make two semi circular dies. Warm the end of the pipe in some hot water and clamp between the dies in the vice with about 25mm poking through. Start the union in the end of the pipe and knock it in with a mallet, hold the union square with pliers while you hit it.

As soon as I have an accurate spec for hose and fittings versus vehicles and have sourced them! I'll have one of the production valves with me at the Bristol & West show this weekend.

Any more info on what tube sizes people's vehicles use would be very valuable! I've bought non return valves for 5/16 and 3/8 OD pipe with a 50/50 mix and will probably do the same for the valve. The trouble comes when someone says "I have a 1991 V8 90 - what size do I need? I don't know how to use a Ruler to measure myself" I need to have an idea at least!
