300tdi injectors into 200tdi genuine defender engine??

Recommended Posts

Hi guys. I have a 200tdi genuine defender engine fitted in my 90 and want more powerrrrrr, as everyone does!

I read somewhere at some point that fitting 300tdi injectors to a 200tdi engine would increase performance. I cant find where i read this for the life of me so figured i'd ask on here. Is this true?

Before anyone says it, its running higher boost and tweeked fueling. Full size front mount intercooler, straight thru mid section exhaust, k&n filter. So please dont suggest that for more power.

Just want to know if its even possible to swap the 300tdi injectors to a 200tdi head and if it would give any performace gains? ie cleaner/more efficient combustion giving greater power??? better fuel economy maybe??

ANY advice is greatly appreciated and i thank you all for your replies in advance.

Cheers, Bear.

200tdi injectors arnt a performance issue. New nozzles will help however. You want bigger turbo and the like next. The FIP in tdi set up is good for about 160ish bhp.

New nozzles? please can you elaborate on this?? Same nozzle just new or a different part!

Im likely to call this thread quits n open a new thread about turbos soon.

Thanks to everyone for their input so far!

just a new part. 200 tdi injector nozzles are good for approx 70 thousand miles.

ok injectors r a relatively unknown area to me, i just have them reconned/tested/cleaneed/etc by a professional... im a studying engineer n a competant spannerer so im no newbie lol

Can i change my nozzles in a good home workshop or is there more to it?

cheers

heyup bear. 3oo injectors will physically fit but wont increase performance.

i dont know if this is any way normal but my mate has a standard tune 300tdi pump on his 200tdi 90 and it goes really well, no other performance upgrades, but it seems to have the perfect balance of loads of power but only the pre boost smoke, and a light haze at high revs at full load.

i suspect that he was just lucky and the standard 300 pump wouldnt normally make that much difference, although its no faster than a well tuned 200tdi pump

looking at these 200 & 300Tdi injectors, they are different at the nozzle & thread end, I don't think they are interchangable between the 2 engines,

I can post the injectors details Bosch part numbers/nozzle types if needed.

200 and 300 pumps are IDENTICAL.

Sounds like your mates 300 pump was faffed with before it was fitted.

Back to injector nozzles, the nozzles can be changed at home, you need a 15mm spanner and a ultrasonic cleaner to do them.

So, I've got a 15mm spanner and a small ultrasonic cleaner (used for cleaning jewelllery, model train bits).

Is changing the nozzles the only thing you need to do to an injector?

Mine have been on for over 100,000 miles and I've been quoted £55 each to recondition them. Even that is cheaper than buying new one's, so intrigued to see if there's a way to do them myself.

Always thought they were a bit of a specialist job with lots of expensive kit needed.

Thank you for the link.

At least it's not specialist tools, shims, extreme tolerances etc and looking at that it just seems that nozzles are about the only things that will wear.

Still not sure I'm competent enough to have a go at them especially after the problem of slight leakage after re-assembly.

I may just get them done by a specialist, let my wallet take the hit and have some come back if they're not right.

Sorry to pull up an old thread, but earlier i was having my usual ebay perv and started looking at comp safari motors. There is one, running a disco 200 lump, 300 nozzles and a td6 vvt at 26psi, he claims its near 200bhp.

This makes me wonder what advantage a 300 nozzle gives, you say a 300 nozzle spray pattern is wrong. But why?

Would be interested in seeing some extreme 2/300 tuning.

200 and 300 nozzles spray to different points in the cylinder. as far as I know there the same size. 300 injectors have higher crack pressures.

Give me some money, and i'll show you some "extreme" TDi tuning.

Wheres the fun in paying someone else to do something?!

I don't even run a 200tdi anymore, im purely interested in what can be done to settle my inquisitive mind.

Thats the motor im talking about.

I presume, after rereading, the 200bhp is largely down to the LPG injection.

Yeah, alot of that will come from the LPG injection because the pump cant actually fuel to 24PSi without mods.

Not sure about the so called big valved head, theres no room in a 200TDi head to fit bigger valves.

I'm very much of the opinion a TDi can produce over 200BHP with pump internal mods, a decent VNT and a large surface area but small volume intercooler oh, and a decent exhaust. How long it'll last is anyones guess!
