Hello Lr4x4 - new member, and advice please re 200tdi exhaust

Recommended Posts

Hello everybody,

I'm new to this forum, well as a member; I have used the wealth on information on here numerous times and thought it probably time to give something back, well if I have any useful info! And be able to ask specific questions.

I've owned a Ex MoD 110 for a few years and put a 200tdi disco engine in about 2 years ago. I have now removed the disco engine and replaced it with a 200tdi def engine with all the defender bits and pieces to make it as much of a genuine 200tdi defender as possible. Whilst before was a quick engine swap this time round has turned into a bit of a rebuild with more emphasis on doing it properly, which brings me on to my problem...

I fitted a 2.5 TD exhaust to go with the first (disco) 200tdi engine and a steve parker downpipe. However I would like to use the slightly larger correct 200tdi exhaust this time but understand it is quite different from the 2.5td exhaust. Does anybody know what exactly is different, other than having hangers as opposed to clamps? does it follow the same route simply needing the hanger's welded on or is there more to it?
I have heard that the 300tdi exhaust (presumably minus downpipe) is a better fit but I'm a bit lost on this one so any help would be appreciated!

Many Thanks,

Jack

the factory Def 200Tdi has different hangers & pipe Joints, my ex-TD 110 has a stianlees steel TD exhaust fitted with out any problems, no need to change the hangers & it fits straight on. route is the same & IIRC the Tdi hangers are bolt on fittings.

Thanks Western,

So does the TD downpipe mate up to the 200tdi manifold? or would I use the 200tdi downpipe and mate that to the rest of the TD system? I managed to get the defender downpipe when I got the engine and it has a clamp with 2 bolts where my TD mid section has a clamp with three bolts so could be an issue there. But If the 200tdi follows the same route and has bolt on hangers I'll give that some consideration as the welding was my biggest concern having not done any before...

Mine slide on fairly easily, last time I had the downpipe off for acces I refitted it with some exhaust joint paste around the bore & used my trolley jack to get it fully up the turbo exhaust outlet, make sure the clamp is tight, mine blew off about 6 months ago but I didn't loses the clamp. refitted & it's been fine since.

When I fitted a defender 200tdi to my 110, I had the tdi downpipe and that fitted straight onto my TD exhaust from there back. (or did I use the old TD downpipe? I cant properly remember now). I've since had a stainless system made for it. If you need a new rear pipe at all, I have a TD one for a 110 in the garage - used, but perfectly useable.

Thanks for the help guys, and the offer Reb, much appreciated. However I do have a 2 year old TD exhaust fitted at the moment, I'm just deciding if i want to use it or fit the tdi system or even get a stainless system made!

I also used the TD pipe with a disco 200tdi with no issues for 2 years, but I have rebuilt the defender unit and had the FIP and turbo rebuilt and just concerned about fitting a smaller exhaust after all this work, paranoia perhaps! Am I right in thinking the TD pipe ID is 2 1/2 inches and the tdi ID 2 3/4 inches? If so the difference is more than it sounds due to the squared relationship of a circle/pipe so the 1/4 inch difference in diameter effectively becomes a whole inch difference in x-sectional area.

Western you are right, the tdi hangers are bolt on fittings which is good news, I now need to see if their mounting brackets on the chassis are any different or in the same place. Although I wont really be able to tell unless I have the exhaust with me - any ideas? If they are the same it will be pretty simple to sort out in the end. But if not I will probably just use the TD system and be done with it!

The engine will notice.

People notice the difference when swapping out the mid silencer for a streight thru pipe on an otherwise standard engine, so you can be sure both you and the engine will notice the 30% increase in cross sectional area and resulting reduced backpressure.

I agree in that the difference will probably be small and I probably won't notice, especially without trying both where it then may become apparent! However LR fitted a larger pipe for a reason so I expect there will be a small difference and I'd like to give this engine the best chance it has (if i notice it or not!). So if its not going to be too much effort to fit the correct pipe I'd rather do that. If it's going to be a big job butchering and re-welding mounts I would simply use the TD system I have.

Thanks again, If the chassis hanger mounts are in the same place I'll order up a complete 200tdi system and just bolt it on. I had just found some conflicting information when searching this issue that the 200tdi does not line up and the 300tdi system does but It now sounds as if this isn't true. Does anybody know for sure before I order a complete exhaust system and hangers?! Or does anybody have a bright idea of how to check without having the exhaust??

Thanks again

You shouldn't have much trouble with brackets and hangers, the one you'll have the worst problem with is the centre hanger, which is likely to be in a different position. Halfords sell some very useful universal exhaust hangers for a few quid which will sort that though - mechano style metal strip one end which you can just attach to one of the pto cover bolts on the gearbox, exhaust clamp at the other end.

Assuming that you dont have the gear to weld a normal hanger on of course.

thanks guys,

Western in http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=25027&hl=%2Bcentre+%2Bsilencer#entry251845 you say that a full tdi system wont fit unless you change the vehicle part of the hanger mounts. This is the issue. But they can't be that far off, well I wouldn't have thought so! Thanks eightpot, universal hangers is a good idea - no idea why I didn't think of that! No I don't have a welder and trying to avoid welding although I did consider getting a cheap one and giving it a shot!

I think I should just get a tdi system and make it fit perhaps with the odd universal hanger.

True, but I can't drive it at the moment, still part way through a re-build! I've come round to the view it can't be that hard especially after what I've already done - it's just that I don't like uncertainty before starting a job and would rather have all the bits and a plan to get it done! Anyways can't happen all the time. I might do it with universal mounts now and get welded ones done when its running again, which hopefully won't be too long now!

Thanks for you help everybody.
