Mo Murphy
Evening all, I need to pick the brains of you chaps collectively. I have a loud grinding vibration on the 90 typically after coming off the throttle at speed. It seems to occur between 60 mph down to 50 mph. As I slow down past 50 it stops but if I accelerate again to over 50 I'm back into it. I can feel it vibrating through the floor panels. I thought it was a UJ issue but I've pulled both props off, the rear joint slid fine and both UJs free and had no play. The front had a tight UJ and the sliding joint was seized. I replaced the tight UJ and unseized the sliding joint, happy that I'd found the problem. Unfortunately I hadn't. The noise and vibration are still there. Any suggestions ? Retroanaconda
Did you try running without each prop in turn while they were off Mo? No abnormal play in any pinion or transfer box output flanges?
Mo Murphy
Not yet James, I was convinced I'd found it and so put them back on. It is indeed the next step but I thought I'd pick some brains before doing so and go in armed with a list of potential things to look at. rudd86
Mine does this, I know my rear diff input/pinion bearings are shagged. Maybe check your diffs?
Mo Murphy
Thats interesting rudd86 as the rear diff to casing gasket has let go and it's losing a little oil. Mo
Turbocharger
The handbrake drum isn't catching, is it? It does sound more like a bearing issue but let's look for an easy fix first...
BogMonster
Pinion bearings would be my vote.
Mo Murphy
Thanks for your input, chaps. I've arranged for a replacement diff which I'll swap next weekend. I'll let you know if that cures it. Mo
jai_landrover
Mo bit late now your sorted. I have a 4 pin 90 rear for sale. But my main question if it turns out to be the diff. If its scrap to you I'll happily give you a box of beer for it. I'm all out of 3.5's somehow I have 12x 4.7's in the garage. Jai
bishbosh
Are you runnng a lift Mo? I had these symptoms and had to space out the rear trailing arms to rotte the diff nose back to an acceptable angle.
Mo Murphy
I'll bear that in mind James. No lift Bish, so I'll change the diff and see how it goes. Mo
Mo Murphy
Well, it's not the rear diff, Changed it today and the noise is still there. Off with the front prop in the morning and see if the front diff. Fun and games. Mo
