  1. In a similar situation as yourself (other than having a battered d90 rather than a shiny chassis) and I went to Llama4x4.com and got there 11" suspension kit which arrived today, David is really helpful and a big old chatterbox There is also a small LR4x4 discount which was nice. The Rough Country shocks are well rated and have better mounting points and seem to last well, also the kit comes in aroun the £500 mark so is pretty cost effective (I am grinding my props for the time being to delay new props) For the axles I went to crowndiffs.co.uk Steve who runs it is another top bloke and has some very competitive prices, I bought some Detroits in rebuilt 24 spline diffs and some 2nd hand 24 spline axles and shafts. As has been said you need to decide what you want to use it for, my setup is overkill for my current skill (or lack of it) but there is an element of being in a situation that I have some free money at the moment that I may not get again for a while and the fact that like most of us I LOVE BUYING NEW TOYS !!
  2. Funnily enough my mates broken caliper moment also holed his alloy at the same time Spinning is bad mmkay
  3. disgusting, I handed it over with single figure MPG and you manged to get it into double figures Glad your happy with her chap
  4. My mate bust his in the same place on his Disco, he also got bogged on his tod and gave it some beans trying to get out, it seems the wheel/disc manage to catch a stone which slammed into the caliper busting the mount. I would think the TC operating would be causing less stress on the caliper than when under heavy braking
  5. Once again I am after some advice My 90 is rolling on 10 spline axles the rear is drum brake and as per my A-frame ball joint thread the axle attachment points are a bit too rusty so I have lined up a 300 tdi axle with a rebuilt diff and new locker (still changing my mind every 3 seconds on which one!) option 1 The casing on my existing front axle is fine and have been offered complete hub ends (swivels, stubs, discs, cvs and halfshafts) which I can slot in along with a front rebuilt diff and locker option 2 as my swivels are fairly new can I just slam in some new cvs and 24 spline shafts to my existing axel? or are ther seal and seal "land" differences? Obviously changing the whole ends is the easiest way I just know my swivels and bearings are good and fitting new cvs/shafts would mean I know they are perfect as well? At the moment I am going for standard 24 shafts etc to dull down the pain of this upgrade and if I start busting shafts/cvs then I will be speaking to Mr Ashcroft So what is the best way to go to 24 splines up front? cheers all
  6. As you say it is laminated and if it was my car I would happily drive it like that but it has to be your call as when it comes down to a safety issue no one is going to tell you to do it in today's litigious society
  7. lol at all the circling vultures I would re-chassis it, rent some space if you haven't got any to get it into a rolling stage so you can get it back home and do the rest there
  8. Cheers for that, I had posted in that thread and he didn't have any good rears I am paused with no axle at the moment as I am getting a locker (jury is still out as to what one) and am being provided a good condition 2nd hand one to go with the new diff, so I can't be naffed to fit this ball joint then have to do it all again on the new axle
  9. I want to stick on a removable steering boss on mine, and I get to lose the nasty old 90 steering wheel at the same time Leave her at full lock with no wheel on it will cause some probs
  10. Aren't they the same tread pattern as the Insa Turbo Saharas both Being Simex copies? or are they available in larger sizes or something?
  11. Any southern Land rover breakers yoiu care to name? Ta steve
  12. I was more worried about Tom's 10 inch third member.
  13. This is what I was going to say, the mount points are pretty universal it is just the hose etc that is an issue when mixing PAS boxes so sticking in an early 90 non PAS box should be a doddle.
  14. well its out but the spring seat mounts and the trail arm mounts are pretty corroded, also the spring securing bolts sheared off and the nut is rusted solid to the spring seat mount on the axle Ideally I would love to replace it with a disc rear axle but there is nothing local to me and shipping an axle seems prohibitively expensive. So what do you think? use / bin / repair ? Anyone got an axle down south? Sometimes you just shouldn't start some things
  15. On my old disco I just booted the lever with my foot repetedly until it released, once it was free lots of waggling and some new grease made it change effortlessly.
  16. I just replaced my box as mine was going stiff then loose and was having to correct my steering all the time in a straight line. I also had panhard rod and radius arm bush issues that was giving some of my clonks, but a recon'd box transformed my steering. I got mine from National Power Steering via paddocks, was all really quick (apart from beign sent a duff box but that was a one off issue) and Padocks collected my old box the day after I called them and I got my surcharge back within a week
  17. Cheers for the reply chaps As I am fitting the Llama4x4 kit mid next week I have to take the brake line, shocks, trailing arms and springs off anyway so that only leaves the prop holding the axle on so I will whip that off and just spin the axle upside down and punch the joint out the axle. Going to give the rear quarter chassis, axle and a frame a clean up and hammerite them up to make them look a bit nicer and help delay the rust
  18. Been trying to find a wider ball joint splitter as my set is mighty fine but a tad too narrow, and all the large ones are Comercial / HGV ones and so come with a hefty price tag I have a 3lb lump hammer that I am tickling it with, should that be enough or is it an execute to get something more manly? ta muchly Steve
  19. I have a press to do the ball joint into the A-frame I have a suitable tube to avoid pushing on the joint, it is the thread shaft that goes into the axle that I am having grief from (hence the use of lots of various percussion instruments ) I have a ball joint separator that is almost big enough and with a larger mallet recon it will spread enough to do its job
  20. From the posts I could find on here it seems that extreme violence is the order of the day in getting the ball joint out of the axle but after much bashing I am at a loss It is all pretty rusty down there and I had to split the nut off with a chisel, I could remove the axle totally as I have to fit the Llama 4x4 kit later in the week so everything is coming off anyway and flip the axle in my press but that is a lot of effort. Would a large G-clamp be enough to push it out? It also seems like I could do with new brackets that hold the a frame bushes that bolt to the chassis, any thoughts on where to find some of these as unless I am going blind I can't find reference to them on various on line shops? Cheers peeps
  21. It was indeed refreshing to purchase something from someone who clearly loves what he does. Whilst most of the companies I have used are friendly and efficient they are normally a very sanitised transactional service "what you want" "here you go" "have a nice day", I like a bit of a gossip and I think that is a massive part of Land Rover ownership
  22. Lol I started to try and change my the other day and the cowling was easy just the wheel was the tough bit. As I was becoming increasingly more grumpy with it and not wanting to join the broken nose hall of shame I gave up for the time being and live with not being able to indicate right. Its odd as I happily beat out suspension bushes (doing the A-frame ball joint tomorrow, yay!) but that steering wheel just makes me lose interest in changing the stalk every time??
  23. Spoke to David at Llama4x4 today and what a thoroughly nice chap he is. Had nice chat about suspension and Land Rovers in general and even got around to actual buying a 11" suspension kit once we stopped yacking So a big thanks to David and if anyone is thinking of getting a suspension kit I would recommend him on the service alone, and judging by all the thumbs up on this forum for his kit I am sure I will be extremely happy with my new boingy bits
