  1. All in all a brilliant weekend. I loved the night section and the navigation aspect was excellent fun. Some of those punches were set by a twisted mind! Huge thanks to all who organised and laid on the challenge, hopefully we can do another soon!
  2. Taken from the article linked to above "Generally, your vehicle will need to be approved under the SVA scheme and issued with a Minister's Approval Certificate (MAC) if it is up to 10 years old from the date of manufacture and is not covered by either an EC or national type approval (British or similar national approval from another European Economic Area Member State)." Now this is interesting, as I returned from Germany 5 years ago with 2 vehicles and set about getting them registered on UK number plates. The one was 7 years old and would have needed a SVA but because it was EU specification I was able to get a declaration from Subaru UK to say that it had the same spec as UK models. This allowed the VOSA to issue me with a certicate of conformity which together with an MOT was sufficient to get new numberplates. Now my other vehicle was 11 years old, it was a LHD van of a type that was never ever sold in the UK, and for that all i needed was an MOT. So could it be argued that if the changes are made to a vehicle over 10 years old then SVA is not needed anyway? Just a thought
  3. hehe Steve knows no fear unfortunately and is happy with anything. Luckily I am ussually outside rigging the tree strops......
  4. http://www.frazier.co.uk/stealthc.htm in fact check out the whole range, there are some interesting things there, especially the rural pursuits vehicle for wheelchair users. I can see one of them on an RTV trial one day soon! edited to add: http://www.angliasprayers.co.uk/used.html
  5. Looking real good. One question. Where will you keep the recovery equipment and other paraphanalia? Looking forward to meeting up with a few of ya this weekend...
  6. The lane you refer to GBMUD is the one with the contentious puppy farmer at the end of the lane where you say there is no ROW. This lane was actually listed (including GRs) in the LRO mag in their 100 miles of lanes across Wales so I expect there has been considerable interest since then...

  8. Brown trousers runs up past Grwyne fawr resevoir in the middle of the black mountains and comes out on Llaneileu common above Talgarth. It is TRO'd to vehicles with 4 or more wheels! and unlikely ever to be opened again. If you speak nicely to the farmer (or buy a fishing permit) he will grant permission to drive as far as the reservoir. This is an easy track but a great location and fantastic views. After the resevoir it gets a bit more interesting! M
  9. The horns on my Disco 1 are really good. Should be thousands of em out there for the taking.
  10. PS anyone know what the night challenge might involve? Should we seriously be fitting extra lights? Last night event we did involved a compass and lots of running about in the dark. Not an internal combustion engine in sight!
  11. Me and Steve90 (driver) will be there .First competitive challenge so be gentle with us. Only one cloud on the horizon...Stevo is taking the 90 to Toms Farm this weekend for a shakedown (read, Play) so hoping he doesn't do anything too silly and damage it beyond repair..... I hear hes ready to try the Widow maker up and down! LOL
  12. Sorry, yes i was referring to the AWDC challenge event at the Walters Arena site near to Seven Sisiters in S Wales. No probs with being in reserve but cant really foresee a problem
  13. Could we be pencilled in provisionally? Would like to see how we get on at Walters next weekend and check dates with Steve90 before committing. To that end, are any of you gonna be at Walters on the 12-13th. Say hello to truck number 68. We will be the ones going round in circles wondering what we are meant to do!
  14. The mount supplied by Sumo to fit the track control bar on the Disco can also be used on the drag link to fit a DISCO damper. BUT you need a braket to fit the damper on the chassis rail end of things tho a bent plate with a hole in it appears to be all that is needed. In order to fit a defender damper you would need the special swan neck on the drag link which is where your hole end of the damper fits and the chassis bracket.
  15. This is also a (very poor) photoshop attempt. OK so it is a series one but the outline is not that disimilar. I am in the throws of convincing myself that this will look OK in the flesh before I get the grinder out. Anyone think its worth a go?
  16. Feel for you mate.Took three grown men 2 hours lying in a puddle to re-aline my lt77. in the end it just popped on. Its one of those things. Good luck
  17. Can I just add to the arguements for welding a bead around the race. This is common practice in agricultural engineering where changing bearings is common and usually involves seizures to shafts. The other method involves a BIG chisel and a BF Hammer but demands some skill and not a little nerve. I can never seem to do it while my brother had whap em off like nothing.
  18. Congrats onthe first. You certainly dont need a job now. What you need is a PhD. 4 more years, then a post Doc. Why give in to reality when there is academia out there waiting for you. Try it, I did, and look at me now!!!! On second thoughts get a job
  19. could have been worse, we might have got 69!
  20. Funnily enough when changing my UJ the other day I realised that my front prop is binding too on full articulation at the transfer end. It also slides so far on the splines that it knocks the dust cover off. The Haynes manual talks of a rubber gator on the front prop sliding joint but mine has never had one. Should it have? I too toyed with the idea of grinding out the yoke (wouldn't need much) but by the time I noticed the prop was back on and be beggared if i were taking it off again! PS No part of Car 68 was included in my avatar. That was another mock-up altogether!
  21. prop rumbling at speed is typical of a UJ on its way out. Get the truck on the level, prop the wheels and get under it with the handbrake off and out of gear. Gives the props a good shake. You will soon see if a UJ has gone. You must do it with the hand brake off tho.
  22. And beware of scammers on Ebay buying the stainless steel grills from Paddocks for £8 and then selling them on Ebay with a Buy it now price of £30 and an ambiguous description that makes it sound like you are getting a brand new Safari snorkel top with a stainless grill. Its easy to spot as the picture used has been lifted from the Paddocks site.
  23. Can I jsut add my commendation for a Subaru. Had mine nearly new nine years ago and have replaced 1 ABS sensor for £120. And thats it. All other consumables bought from factors at prices no worse than a ford focus. 120K hard miles and does 35 to the gallon however you drive it. Not brilliant but as good as most diesel soft roaders in reality. And are not diesel trucks very expensive to Tax in Ireland? (though not sure where your friends cottage is). If it was me I would be looking at legacy estate or a Forester. If price is an issuae get one 5 years old, they will still be just as reliable.
  24. The paddocks repair sections that require modification are, as far as I am aware, Range Rover items. They are quite similar but need a bit of trimming. I looked into getting some to repair the Disco but the way I am driving it now I dont think it will make the next MOT lol
