  2. I picked up a couple of Freelander-1 Auxilliary Lamp Wiring Kits at a Sortout and they have Delphi Sealed Metri-Pack 150 Series Connectors to connect to the Lamps.

The female connectors on the loom look like this -

    12052641.jpg

They also have a Grey Terminal Lock on the back of the Connector (not shown in this image)

The male connectors on the Land Rover lamps should look like this -

    12162000.jpg

I've not yet found anywhere in the UK selling sensible quantities of these Delphi Connectors.

I intend to adapt the Freelander Wiring Kit to use to fit Hella Driving Lamps on my Discovery-2, and if I can't find Delphi Metri-Pack Connectors here in the UK, I'll replace them with AMP/Tyco Superseal Connectors, which are far more available.

  3. If you take the lock itself off the back door you should find the barrel in a collar.

The collar will have a small hole just off centre top that you can fit a small nail or screwdriver in it.

This will release the barrel and as long as the slot is central it should slide out.

The new barrel will have the same spring loaded pin that will clip back into the small hole in the collar.

    As shown here - http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=39849

  4. According to my Military Parts Books, they are -

    110 (Hardtop/Soft Top/Truck Cab Pickup) Floor Tread Strip =
    330615

    90 Floor Tread Strip =
    335832

    Lower Bulkhead Tread Strip =
    330617

Civvy models only had 3 x Floor Strips fitted at the factory

Military models had 3 x Floor Strips on the floor + 1 Floor Strip on each Wheelbox side (total 5) and 4 x Lower Bulkhead Strips

On my 110, I've fitted 5 x Floor Strips on the floor + 1 Floor Strip on each Wheelbox side (total 7) and 5 x Lower Bulkhead Strips (in line with the floor strips)

I would take a picture but the back is filled with old cr@p lots of useful stuff

  5. Following on from my last post -

Details of Anderson's complete range can be found here - http://www.andersonpower.com/

and the SB Range here - http://www.andersonpower.com/products/multipole-sb.html

There are Data Sheets and Drawings to download which give details of the range of connectors and accessories available.

Most Anderson suppliers only sell complete connectors, very few stock the full range of component parts and accessories.

Torberry Connectors (in my post above) say that they are an Anderson Power Products Distributor, so they should be able to supply the complete range.

I bought all of my various Anderson Connectors (SB50, SB175 and SB350) and accessories (Mating Handles, Cable Clamps, Reducing Bushings, Dust Covers, Cable Entry Sleeves) from this company who, at the time (1997), were the UK Importer for Anderson Power Products -

    Colton Electrical Equipment Co. Ltd

    329 Front Lane,

    Upminster,

    Essex,

    RM14 1LW

    Tel: (01708) 224454

    Fax:(01708) 221191

Since then, any extra connectors that I've needed, I've bought from 'Get-Connected' on eBay.

To answer Brendan's original question -

I would say that if you don't have the correct tool to do a Hexagon Crimp, then Soldering is better than an Indent Crimp or some other homemade solution because, as Pete3000 said, if you deform the connector barrel too much it doesn't fit into the housing properly and can cause the contacts to not mate correctly.

I also bought one of those cheap Chinese Hexagon Crimpers on eBay and I'm very pleased with it's perfomance.

I'm not sure if it would be 'man enough' for professional, all day, every day use, but for the sort of use most of us here will put it to, it's more than capable.

  6. If you get them from VWP, they come with 40mm pins, you can buy 35mm pins seperately which are a bit more suitable for smaller cable. I'ts also worth getting the covers that fit over the vehicle mounted half of the connectors, keeps the carp out when not in use and the handles are a nice addition on the jump leads - but a bit costy!

    Cheers,

    lee

Anderson Connectors are available with contacts to suit different sizes of cable.

Reducing Bushes are also available for in-between sizes.

The Anderson SB175 connector is available from - Torberry Connector's online shop - to suit 50mm2, 35mm2, 25mm2 and 16mm2 cable.

They also have the Rubber End Caps and Cable Entry/Body PVC Sleeves to help keep dirt and water out of the connector.

  7. Genuine parts seem cheap...

Those prices were from about 1995, when I put Military sidescreen demisters into my 110 (the partsman at the dealers wrote them down as he looked them up)

I scanned those pages from my Supplementary Military Parts Books, which can be downloaded in full from the 'Defender110' link in my signature.

More on this and some pics of my install here - http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=23353

  8. or use 15amp spade connectors, which I did on the original loom to get the TD5 pack to work, since replaced by the 300Tdi ROW loom & a 2001 Freelander vehicle socket. might be worth a look around a Scrappy for a dead Freelander & obtain the socket from it.

If you're off to the scrappy looking for a Freelander to get the connector from, here's where to find it -

    post-148-1247258375_thumb.jpg

Not sure if you have already, but have you tried asking at a Land Rover dealer to see if the instrument loom to main dash loom 14way sumitomo connector halves are available separatley as spare parts?

I know other vehicle manufactures will sell you connectors separately, it would be mighty handy if Land Rover did to save people having to buy whole looms for one connector! :(

Land Rover don't sell connectors separately :(

If you look in RAVE at the connector face details you'll see a Rover Group part number under the illustration, a VERY FEW connectors are available from Rover car parts dealers (e.g. Rimmer Brothers), but not this particular one (YPC10495), nor many other Land Rover useful ones.

I got my tame main dealer parts man to look up some of the connector part numbers from RAVE and none of them were valid part numbers, he suggested that they were Rover Group internal part numbers used for production purposes only.

In fact, the only useful connectors that I've got through Rover dealers are the RISTS TTS connectors, used in the Range Rover Classic (and the real Mini) -

    post-148-1247259378_thumb.jpg

Some of these RISTS TTS connectors are also available from Autosparks

  9. Warn's recommended grease is "Aeroshell 17" what readily available alternatives would be suitable...

From - Shell Canada - Greases: Aviation greases -

" AeroShell 17 grease is a fully synthetic grease containing 5% molybdenum disulphide. It is particularly suitable for lubricating heavily loaded sliding surfaces such as bogie pins on aircraft landing gear assemblies over the temperature range of - 73 °C to +149 °C "

The Product Data Sheet .pdf is here - http://www.shell.ca/static/ca-en/downloads...icants/5-12.pdf

The RAF equivalent is Grease XG-276 if you're passing Mount Pleasant ;)

  10. What is the connection between terra firma and frogs island? Or are they the same thing?

    Daan

They're both part of the Allmakes4x4 empire -

    From http://www.terrafirma4x4.com/aboutus.php

    ABOUT TERRAFIRMA

The Terrafirma range of Land Rover accessories has been created by Eddie Priscott, former MD of leading off road preparation specialist Frogs Island 4x4 and now Off-Road Accessories Technical Director at Allmakes 4x4 Ltd, one of the World's leading Land Rover parts and accessories wholesalers.

  11. Norwich Union quoted in the well unhappy territory - £960 fully comp for the same vehicle!!!

Must be something to do with paying Bruce Willis and co to do the fancy ads.....

All that pointless corporate rebranding nonsense costs money - and it's the punter that's paying for it :(

They should have changed their name to - Robin B'Stard & Co.

  12. LEGAL BIT FOR UK IS PART OF BULKHEAD MUST REMAIN OFF DONOR VEHICLE TO KEEP TITLE.

That'll be the manky rusty bit in the far right of this picture then

    04e0_3.JPG

The listing is full of errors and total bull$h1t

    1976  - my @rse!!!

That's a 1989 Model Year vehicle - the 2.5TD Engine, Side Stripes and Grille Badge give away it's true age.

Even if it had a complete 1976 bulkhead - that wouldn't qualify it as a 1976 vehicle or confer tax-free status upon it.

The seller is a con-man

  13. Is this bulb available or do I need a new switch if I want it to work? It is a (very) small twist lock bulb that locks into the bottom of the switch. If available separately, anyone have a part #?

It isn't listed separately in Microcat for the 2002> Defender Hazard Warning Switch, however......

...it is listed for the 300TDi Discovery Hazard Warning Switch (which is essentially the same switch, but vertical instead of horizontal)

    STC1205 - BULB & HOLDER ASSEMBLY, CLEAR - £2.91

    Also available -

    STC1877 - BULB & HOLDER ASSEMBLY, ORANGE - £1.46

    STC1878 - BULB & HOLDER ASSEMBLY, GREEN - £1.53

(Prices from Jan 2009 Microcat - Cheers James :D )

  14. I have laid my hands on some really good and brand new batteries to go in my 90 and disco but they are dry (never been filled) this is why i got them at a good price and cause i brought a few so where can I get the acid from because the first fill has to be acid just not sure if you can buy it ??

    any suggestion

    Shane

I see you're in Colchester - do you know anyone in the Army? (Preferably REME or MT)

They have gallons of the stuff in their battery shops

  15. Personally, I would just replace the Grille - they're not that expensive.

Alternatively, you could fit these -

    ABRED1_large.jpg

    12V Amber Square Strobes - ABRED1

    or these -

SPOTLIGHTS BY HELLA 1970`S CHROME BACK

I'm not sure about "1970's" - I've got a Hella Accessories Catalogue from 1985/86 and they're listed in there as -

"Model (149) Monte Carlo - Made of heavy-gauge chrome-plated steel" - available as Fog or Driving Lamps

    Lamp Dimensions = 154mm High x 162mm Wide x 68mm Deep

Overall Height = 177mm (from mounting bracket to top of lamp)

  16. I've just got back from our local Aldi.

I bought a Compressor, one each of all the Air Tools & Accessories, 2 x litres of Compressor Oil and 2 x litres of Airline Oil

    Grand Total = £299.14 :D

I haven't the time today to unpack and test them all properly, but they all look fairly decent quality and come complete with lots of accessories.

    I'm well pleased :D

  17. Land Rover Genuine Parts Drive Flange Bolts aren't very expensive - They're Grade 10.9 and they come pre-impregnated with thread locking compound.

As well as cleaning out oil in the threaded holes in the hubs, you should also run an M10 (for Defenders) Plug or Bottoming Tap down them to remove the old thread-lock.

  18. In addition to the switches Ralph has listed above, there is another Defender switch shown in Microcat -

    SWITCH-ACCESSORY PUSH PUSH, NON-ILLUMINATED, POLICE VEHICLE - Pt. No. 13H6342L - Price = £18.69 inc. VAT (Feb.2008)

A ready-made Auxilary Lamp switch, with illuminated logo, that will fit the lower dash, is one from a Classic Mini.

This is from the XParts EPC (a Russian online version  ) -

    post-148-1234777671_thumb.jpg

Item No. 11 is the front fog lamp switch, there are a few to choose from -

    SWITCH-ROCKER FOG-FRONT = Mini (1990 VIN XN010001 on)

    YUF101290PMA - Superseded by YUF101670PMA

    YUF101670PMA - £15.65 inc. VAT (Rimmer Bros.)

ADU4791 - Superseded by YUF101640 - REAR FOG LAMP SWITCH

    YUF101640 - £6.51 inc. VAT (Rimmer Bros.)

YUF000110 - not listed by Rimmer Bros.

    YUF101690 - £18.93 inc. VAT (Rimmer Bros.)

Looking at some of those prices :o , I think that the scrappy will be a better/cheaper source of Mini switches.

Another option is the Range Rover Classic Main Lighting Switch -

    DSC09625.jpg

It will fit in the Defender lower dash and is easier to to fumble for than a Rocker Switch :)

  19. Are the two extra pipes for the side windows T'ed off from the heat pipe for the pasenger side of the front windscreen?

    Thanks

    Steve

No, they're taken to 2 x holes in the airbox closing panel RRC7320, adjacent to the hole for the LH screen demister pipe.

This panel (#4 in the diagram) cost nearly £35 (in 1995), so I didn't bother with the new panel and just made a couple of extra holes in my existing panel.

  20. I am looking at the possibility of taking my LR Defender County Station Wagon 110 Td5 (2005) to Mexico and using it there indefinitely.

However, since the vehicle isn't sold there I'm concerned about getting spare parts as and when they might be needed, and repairs.

I'd be really glad to hear thoughts and advice on this from any Defender owner in Mexico, or the owner there of any other Landrover.

According to their website, the Mexican Navy use Defenders, so there may be some support in the country -

Secretaria de Marina - Armada de México
