  1. I'm holding out in the hope of finding some cheap(er) second user genuine ones!
  2. I agree and have no relay (see my earlier post) but have earthed the alternator to the block.
  3. If you wire it up as you have suggested but put a feed to an aux fuse box from second batt you can take the feed for things like aux lights from this fuse box then if you do ever need to run these with the engine switched off there is no danger of killing the starter batt. Same applies for things like 12v power sockets and audio / entertainment. This stuff will still get the 14.4 volts from the alternator while the engine is running (provided the starter battery is charged).

  5. I agree, you have no way of making sure that running ancillaries will not kill the starter battery
  6. here is the Gwyn Lewis kit fitted and the wiring diagram that came with it.
  7. I run a second alternator on my 200tdi set up for overlanding. I use the Gwyn Lewis conversion and fitted this cos the original 45A alternator struggled to keep my leisure batteries charged so I added an 85 A disco alternator. The Gwyn Lewis kit also keeps the second unit up high away from the crud. I went down this route as I like the idea of having 2 alternators in case one fails on a trip then there is less pressure to change it straight away. Wiring is a doddle. Small wire from signal terminal to dash, through a 5w bulb to earth Run a big wire from the main feed terminal to the positive terminal (i wired mine to the starter battery in case the first alternator fails) Run the earth to earth Remember to use big cables if upgrading.
  8. I'm thinking about going down this route too perhaps with wifi.be interested to hear what you end up using
  9. Yes I had thought about the stub axle issue and have kept the early ones I have some hubs from fleabay.just looking around for the caliper mounting brackets next
  10. I usually buy this type of kit from a known supplier, hate to think of my truck going up in smoke because I saved a tenner! I have bought battery cable from both of these in the past and been happy. http://www.12voltplanet.co.uk/plain-copper-battery-cable.html http://www.vehicle-wiring-products.eu/product.php/1030/battery-starter-cable
  11. Thanks for replies and please excuse my relative ignorance on this topic. I have acquired a (free) axle of unknown provenance, I want to upgrade this to disk brakes to fit to my 200tdi 110. Don't really want to go down the road of converting/ refurbing the rest of the axle to find the diff is goosed. No experience of working on a diff so not sure what i would look for when I got the thing out of the case! Is it still possible to get the bearings? Can i get the tool required to free the diff from the case or would a local engineering firm be able to do this? Thanks Mark
  12. HI Does anybody know where I can get a Salisbury rear diff rebuilt?
  13. Do you think that this is a better option than tracking down a 300tdi axle with disk brakes and swapping the lot?
  14. Picture and description of the sill channel here http://www.yrm-metal-solutions.co.uk/epages/BT4822.sf/en_GB/?ObjectPath=/Shops/BT4822/Products/070/SubProducts/070-0001&ViewAction=ViewProduct
  15. Have you looked at the Mantec one. I also think that while Flatdog gear all seems OK they can be a bit expensive at times.
  16. Its a 110 station wagon which I am kitting out for some overlanding so its getting heavy, I did think about bolting on a 300tdi disk braked Salisbury but they are a bit thin on the ground, then I looked at a refurbed exchange but they are over £1k and wouldnt even take my drum braked axle as the exchange, so here I am! How is your system working now Western? Thanks MIke, I live in the middle of nowhere and its always a chore finding someone to make things like that.
  17. I am steadily gathering bits to do this conversion on my 200 tdi, do i need to change master cylinder or any other parts other than the axle components to ensure correct brake balance etc?
  18. Do you still have spacers Jim? are they looking for a new home, if so what do you want for them?
  19. Hi I don't know how set you are on green laning but we drove the mountain passes in our 110 a few weeks ago, it was all on tarmac but the kids (6 and 8) were definitely impressed
  20. I bought one earlier this year from Mat at MYL 4x4 in Huddersfield. this meant that the truck was only off the road for a few days while I did the swap, I was happy with it, no probs getting it back together (in fact doors shut better now) and the price was very reasonable.
  21. I am looking to arrange a club overland trip and am thinking French Alps as a starter, has anyone done this recently? Any advice on routes, wild camping areas campsites etc would be appreciated. Ideally we are aiming for a week to ten days in total. Thanks
  22. HI Can anyone tell me if I can fit a td5 bulkhead to my 200 tdi please? Also if I change the bulkhead do I need seals and brackets (a post bottoms etc) Thanks Mark
