  1. It's red. Red Land Rovers ain't worth much, they attract dents. I'll give you £50 if the tank is full! Les
  2. I've kept the name catflap which I believe was credited to Rogue Trooper, although I don't remember to be honest. I was driving in a quarry in Warwickshire when I accidentally reversed into a pointy rock that punched a hole straight through the back door. He (?) commented that I now had a catflap in the back door and the name stuck. Seeing as how the 88" S3 that I now have has been made from many ideas and parts from the old catflap, it seemed only right and proper to keep the name. Not a lady though - Catflap is definitely a bloke! Les.
  3. I should make it clearer (sorry) Trev has said he doesn't want me as Admin when he takes over the LRA (the first one) I resigned as Admin on LRE through yet more carp from Richard Green and his attitude to this forum. I stayed as moderator of the international forum because I still want to be a part of a team that helps and enjoys the 'company' of it's members. Some of us keep asking important questions concerning Trevs action in all of this, and we are repeatedly ignored, even though Trev can be seen to be reading the relevant threads. This is understandably very annoying to myself, Tony C, and MOG. Other forum members aslo ask questions, and are ignored for the most part. Two weeks ago this forum was first class, now it's ****e. The LRE forum isn't worth all of this in my opinion, You all made the posts, you all are the forum, never mind the name of the site, if someone asks pretty-much any question regarding a Land Rover, if there was no archive, they would still get the information they require from you all. So it's you members that are important, you all make whatever site you are on the best. I offered to buy the LRe site and had I got it I would have picked the bones, got geoff to put everything in the new LRA site, and it would be there for anyone to look at if they wanted. LRA would be as good still and all this carp wouldn't have happened. The price Trev has paid in all this secrecy and other carp just isn't worth it in my opinion. Shame as it is, there is a lot of friction between moderators and forum members alike at present. The original idea was for everyone that was a member of LRE to come over here as the site was on the brink of collapse. I posted at one point that it seemed unlikely that we would get the archive, and in general people didn't seem to mind too much. LRA was faster, easy on the eyes for you lazy office types,. and free from politics. A lot of you offered to donate money to keep the site free from commercial control. There's several hundred pounds promised a while ago, plus design for t-shirts, stickers etc. I still say that there should never have been any secrets, if we couldn't get LRE out in the open, then it wasn't worth the aggravation it all has caused. Les.
  4. Trev (Bigfoot) owns the domain names for LRAddict.com LRAddict .co.uk, and maybe others. He is owner and admin of LRE He is owner of LRA He also has a paypal account in the LRAddict name. He also has a bank account in the LRAddict name. LRA will be absorbed by the old LRE site and they will become one. I've been sacked as Admin on LRA. Too much secrecy, and too much silence, I bluddy hated it Bad planning and the price has been heavy. You have all been kept in the dark, at least soon all will be known. Les.
  5. Well one works, but not the other. I took these mounts off of an ex-mil 2.5 N/A engine. Passenger side is fine, but drivers is obviously not. This is a 2.5TD from a 1990 90, going into a 1972 88" SWB S3. This is ok, and lowering the engine will obviously line up. Drivers side is a different matter. the rubber mount is not even bolted on with it's metal bracket that's held in place by a couple of 9/16" bolts. The passenger side is 2" too high, but this side is touching while the engine is still level. Les.
  6. Thanks Ralph, correct as always (well except for your choice of wig! ) Stephen, you taking the mickey? Is this the start of a string of propshaft jokes due to my recent error with one? Should I go and Borrow Nige's coat, as he seems to have not needed to use it for a week at least? Les.
  7. I understand that a 110 and 130 exhaust is just a short piece of exhaust pipe that is coincidentally the same length as the first silencer on a 90 or 110. £37 for this bit of pipe, and I always thought that there was a noise and small performance improvement. Les.
  8. What engine mounts do I have to use to sit the 2.5TD engine in a series chassis. The engine is connected to the gearbox, but is sitting on a big lump of wood at present because I can't figure out which mounts to use. I have series diesel mounting rubbers, but the metal brackets that bolt to the block are doing in my [scots] HEED[/scots] Les
  9. Sorry everyone. I didn't pay attention. I thought the TDi comment was about the one in the 90. No chrome really, just a poor taste joke. The seat box is a bit bling, but at least you won't see it with the doors on! Les B's motor seemed fine to me and worked ok. No doubt he'll respond after the confusion! Les.
  10. I've cut 3mil cold pressed steel with a B&D pendulum jigsaw. Spray occasionally with WD40 or similar type of oil, take it easy and don't let the blade get hot or the tips of the teeth will quickly blunt. You need a good quality blade as well, you get what you pay for when doing this type of work. If you are cutting a curve, then one that's tight will heat up the blade very quickly, and may cause it to seize or break. I wouldn't try to go to 6mm though. Les.
  11. Go ahead. Bob has asked to do it too. Les.
  12. The Aussies have had the ashes for long enough. It's about time we got our mitts on then for a change. Les.
  13. I tried to remove the remains of the 2 1/4 petrol engine that was in catflap when I bought him. I got an engine crane, so no sweat. I checked all the wiring etc was removed, no earth cables, exhaust, bell housing nuts, fuel pipes, etc etc. Tied the strap around the crank, dropped it down the drivers side and then reached underneath to retrieve the end, tied it off so that the engine would be lifted nice and sqaure - just like you're supposed to. I undid the engine mounting rubbers, lifted the engine clear of them, placed support under the gearbox, a small gap appeared between bell housing and engine - that's good, it's coming. Pry bar in the gap and lever, creaking sound. I figure that something has rusted (the clutch perhaps on the gearbox input shaft), so continue to lever, curse, sweat, get a bigger lever, swear a LOT more, sweat a lot more. The engine finally comes away from the gearbox, but it still won't move up or out of the engine bay. I look around - everything looks clear of the chassis, gearbox etc, so I get underneath. This is what I see. What a plonker! A new propshaft gaiter is needed now, and a smack round the head for being a dork. Les
  14. I wish there was Jim, but I don't think so. You carried that gearbox/transfer case down the drive on your own? Very impressive. They ain't light as you no doubt know. Les.
  15. I had a bit of a job trying to figure out what you two were on about for a minute! If it's Land Rover related, then sad to say that a short while after I finished fitting the TDi engine into the 90, which is actually Sue's - she chucked me in. [sad]. The 90 is hers, so she has it. The ltwt is hers, so she has taken that back. As there were more important things in my life, such as setting up a new life with her, I decided that it wouldn't be feasable to re-build catflap, the S2A, and the S1, so I gave her all the bits for the S1 as she seems to collect them anyway. At present I don't have a Land Rover in working order, The 2A is ready for a tart up and then an MOT. I'll then sell it for a profit and use the money to try to get my life back in some kind of order. I drove to Tonys Bash in a poxy Pug 309, and that pile of carp is what I'm driving at present. I hate the comfort and near silence, but it's what I have to put up with for now. I'm going as fast as I can to get catflapII back on the road. The engine went in it today, and if I was to work on him and nothing else I could get him all finished within a couple of weeks. Work has picked up unfortunately. I tried to get this weekend just to work on him, but I have two jobs turn up that I'll have to do. The paint supplier has let me down three times now, and I have to wait again for another week for the metallic blue that I'm using. The body is painted, as is the front panel, bonnet, both doors, and one wing. The 'Wolf type' door tops had to be dismantled to be painted, and they don't come apart like a series one does. Rivets have to drilled out, glued bits have to carefully prised apart, and the glass has to masked because the window slide and handle are glued to the glass. It took me a whole day to take one apart, wash it, degrease it, prime twice, top coat 4-times. I have got the steel tubing to make the exhaust, the downpipe will be the original item and I have to wait until next week for that as Bearmach don't have one in stock. Sue has the radiator and associated pipework for the new engine, so I will have to buy new bits. Splitting up has broke my heart to be honest, things are real bad at present. I have to say that Fiona has been a shoulder to cry on, she's a true friend. As are Tony and Val, and a few others. There has also been things going on behind the scenes that you will all become aware of eventually. There will be new Admin, at least in part. I was Tonys winch Biatch, and it was fun, and a little painful. I enjoyed meeting a lot of old friends and some new ones, drinking too much, having three girls scream in my lug-hole , and Val trying to match me up with a scary lady That's it, how sad can it get? Here's a dead sexy piccy of catflap I took at 4:45pm today (Saturday) isn't he, erm sexy? B) I also thought I would make some rock sliders for him. The metal only cost 30 squids and I just have to make the mounting brackets, then off to get them chromed Les.
  16. Thanks chaps. The turbo is not new and is not bone dry. There must be a residue of oil in there still though. I'm aware of the temperature, even on the 'cold' side. I've checked turbo shaft float on engines that have only been idle overnight or even a few hours, and they have always been easy to move. I was going to spin the engine for a while with the fuel switched off anyway to re-distribute oil around the engine, so the turbo oil feed would be up to pressure again before I started the engine. I've never come across the stiffness that there is in this Turbo and didn't want it to be damaged. The vanes are so stiff as to prevent me from being able to check for the acceptable play that there should be in the shaft due to ther floating bearing. I did think about using a re-chargeable drill to spin the shaft a bit to see if it eases it off. Do you think this might work? I could apply oil directly to the turbo by removing the top pipe and pouring it in. Les.
  17. Ok, yesterday I sealed off the bits of the engine that had to remain dry, and then steam cleaned the 2.5Td engine that's going to go in catflap today. When I took the tape/plugs/etc off of the engine I checked the turbo vanes for excessive play. Although it feels smooth, the vanes are very difficult to turn. As if the shaft is running in really thick grease. No water got in the turbo and the whole engine has been kept in the dry for approximately 3-months. Is this normal for a cold turbo? If not, has anyone any advice as to why this is and what to do about it? Thanks in advance. Les.
  18. The news this morning - a ban on trail bikes and 4x4's has been extended by a further 12 months. Yorkshire Dales Park Authority and a Trail Rider got to have their say, but no-one for the 4x4's. The ususal accusations of motorised vehicles destroying the byeways was used as the reason, as well as peace and quite for walkers, riders, and cyclists. Dales Rep said people don't want to have to 'dodge out of the way of motorised vehicles' - so you don't need to for horses and cyclists then? The rep for the trail riders stated that he hopes thta in 12-months time there could be an agreement with the parks authority for some kind of motorised access. That would be nice, but I think it's highly unlikely myself. Increasingly, bans are being extended or kept for pathetic excuses, mis-management, and plain lies. If you aren't fit enough, then you are banned from enjoying the Yorkshire Dales. What rubbish. Les.

  20. Rand Lover I now offically know everthing in the world there is to know about LandRovers. Go-on, ask me anything. I am completely rebuilding my engine/gearbox/axels after work,I have allowed 3/4 of an hour for this task. Then I will then be up the pub, where you can find me locked into a discussion on gear ratios/vin numbers/The philosophy of the Tdi and how to drive a 4X4 properly. Tommorrow I plan to fit a Horizontally opposed, reverse Turbo nutter ******* 1907 Traction engine into my Ford Ka/Kawasaki/Series2a Hybrid, although this depends on finishing building the chassis from scratch within the first half of the morning. Post Extras: Rand Lover (Member) 29/11/01 11:01 PM Re: It's official Reply Actually... Land Rover Spiders (LRS) cannot spin their webs in any old place, there appears to be an inherant problem with the silk chemicals setting off a reaction when affixed to the aluminium panels of a LandRover. Hence the need to spot weld fixing points to the steering wheel which does not react and corrode in the same way. Part No B156PP007 the Spider Web Welding Kit. Post Extras: Jabber (Member) 29/11/01 11:47 PM Re: It's official Reply Can you help. is it the LRS that causes the fine thread like appearances under the paint work near larger white blobs which I assume are nests for the embrionic LRSs. Have you any suggestions as to how we can eliminate this problem. I have naturally tried the usual suggestion of conkers in the LR. Your comments great encylopeadia of the LR. It is a very serious matter not to have the statutory spider in a Landrover and the only people that are exempt are those with V8 engines as it is considered that they have enough problems keeping water out of their engines! I've tried 16 little wellies - V8s have twin-spiders - but they won't fit on. Post Extras: Leslie Henson (Member) 30/11/01 03:16 AM Re: It's official Edit Reply The problem with the wellies is that the spiders cannot hang on their webs when wearing them and they then fall off and sometimes drown or get caught on the wing mirror of a passing S****i or J**p. This was a common reason for the serious mental problems encountered with LR spiders in the 80's. When you buy shackle bushes for your Landrover, the plastic tubey-bag that it comes in should be kept for the purpose of keeping Landyspider dry. The two power points on the Series dashboard were there for the Spider-dry which was an optional extra on all Landrovers up to 1985. Les. Post Extras: andih (Member) 30/11/01 03:33 AM Re: It's official Reply so now i know that the LRS was standard fit, what i want to know is was my multi LRS an optional extra??? as my '96 110 also has an abundance in the roof linning. i also assume that it was a clever piece of engineering by land rover in the fact that the cab always lets water in so as to provide liquid refreshment for the LRS i also assume that it was deliberate policy for the passenger window not to wind all the way up whilst moving (unless the drivers window is partly down) to allow air flow to keep the LRS cool during hot weather Post Extras: cols110 (Member) 30/11/01 03:44 AM Re: It's official Reply TRUE STORY When I was younger and more stupid, I just got my licence and first car a V8 4.2ltre HQ holden (for the benift of Aussie ussers) I just cracked 100mph on a quite open country road, pulled the sun visor down and there was this big black huntsman spider (big barsteds, not to dangerous or aggresive though) stareing at me, I shat myself, hit the picks, opened the door flicked it out and stomped on the barsted, then continued on at a much more subdued pace with a slightly higher heart rate. cols110 Post Extras: Leslie Henson (Member) 30/11/01 03:45 AM Re: It's official Edit Reply Andih, if you have multiple LRS inyou 90, then it is very rare. Landrover only fitted multi LRS at the beginning of the 90 production run and it has been proven that there are only 10 90's with multi LRS factory fitted. I think that you will find that Landrover Specially Silly Vehicles built these 10 vehicles with spider preservation body modifications. Unfortunately, the birth of the Discovery brought about the end of LRS as the interior was too softy/fluffy bunny/warmycosydry for the spiders. Les. There was a special handbook supplied with the vehicles from new. To protect the species, the books were made out of a special type of paper that disintegrated after it had been read. Most LRS become lethargic at this time of the year due to the cold weather. They have 16 testicles inside a long, thin scrotum which contracts in the cold causing the body muscles to slow down. You might notice that the LRS re-activates when the inside of your Landrover warms up (LOL) Les. I hope that you realise that a SS(seriously sluggish)LRS in your possession leaves you liable under the Health & Safety in Land Rovers at Work & Play Act 1978. Under Section 14B, Page 762, Para 32, line 18, you have a duty to provide a suitable environment for LRS. For more information on the spiders fitted to the Cameroon models it maybe worth asking Rob Stewart as he is bound to have all the info on all LRS products. cols110 Post Extras: Smudge It was'nt until the TD 5, that real changes were noticed, when Landrover broke off with SAS (Solihull Arachnid Suppliers), and went for the cheaper German made "Critters". ISO LRS's are extremely fragile due to their fragile bits being exposed to the elements, and so require part no LRS 0588329 suffix B to protect them. Because the rebuilding is generally unsuccessful, the part is extremely expensive due to low demand and lawyers fees, and comes accompanied with a High Court writ to have your Land Rover forcibly removed from your possession due to 'damage with malicious intent' of said LRS. So when you return to find your LR gone, you simply pick up the HAT LRS and follow the thread! They've been having some problems during testing trying to destroy the natural instinct of the LRS to cling to the LR with all its might.the NSPCS have been inundated with calls from depressed LRS who claim they've got squatting rights Post Extras: rockslider (Member) 03/12/01 04:40 AM Re: It's official Reply Roger, the SERH use the old 1957 "Dragonfly" helicopter,as Bolkows' and Ecureils' tend to frighten an already sick creature. However, many of the LRS now belong to the RAC,Rescued Arachnids Collective,so they may be returned to your home address if damaged on the road. Post Extras: brucep (Member) 03/12/01 07:25 AM Re: It's official Reply As the 109 is not on the road at the moment, what precautions should I take to protect the factory fitted, optional extra and after market LRS's which have acumulated over the years? Should I temporarily install them in the Range Rover or are Series III LRS's incompatible with Range Rover ones? This is a true story and I am not telling any porkies. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Of course not Les, I for one believe you. I also think the World is flat, Landies don't break down & the Yanks will take Bin liner alive. Des. Post Extras: Leslie Henson Checked my LRS first thing this morning and he seems ok. Gave him a couple of fruit flies for breakfast and he only ate one. The little devil may be trying to 'milk' the attention he's getting. Les. Post Extras: Exmoor Beast (Member) 03/12/01 05:29 PM Re: It's official Reply I am thinking of installing rear steering to my 110 to try and minimise the disturbance to the LRS I have fitted, I think it is a rare Electricity Board Spider and they are a bugger to replace. Has anyone carried out this conversion? Will Post Extras: wettstuff (Member) 03/12/01 05:35 PM Re: It's official Reply Guys, oh dear. A mate of mine was reading this thread and wants to know the details of fitting an LRS into a T@y*t# Hi@ux. Obviously i have advised him that fitting said LRS, will invalidate his warranty on his shinny piece of japanese plastic. Also it would be a very traumatic experience for them. Please help me. I dont want thr RSPCS on my back. Mark Post Extras: Jabber (Member) 03/12/01 06:09 PM Re: It's official Reply GREAT NEWS Since informing the world via the "sticker" that I have LRS fitted it has definitely worked as an effective alarm system. The Disco has not been touched at all - conclusive proof. Also the smaller sticker on the front windscreen has stopped flies committing suicide on my Disco. Total success, any one else noticed these hidden advantages yet. Post Extras: Ian Heppinstall (Member) 03/12/01 07:59 PM Re: It's official Reply Can anyone identify the species of LRS that I have? They seem to be an extremely tough breed, not theese feeble behind mirror/ corner of window types oh no. These are real tough guys. They spin their web on the radiator grill of my Range Rover and catch flies with a relative speed of 70mph plus!!!! For this they have developed an extra special kind of web. The web is strong enough to catch a fly impacting at 70mph plus, yet sufficiently elastic to avoid shredding said fly and sending it into the radiator. They really thrive because of course they can catch many times more flies than a normal LRS, and they also have the benifit of stopping flies from clogging up the rad!!!
