  1. Anyone can do stuff themselves, it's easier these days than possibly it's ever been with cheap tools and materials on hand. It's not beyond even the most basic reader to fit toys and do a lot of mods themselves, yet the comics order ready-made carp, drive to their nearest "specialist" and get them to bolt it on. The problem is, if they cultivate this idea that that's the only way to do it, people will never be inclined to try doing it themselves - if you never show people how it's done, it remains mysterious and "best left to the specialists" rather than something to be had a go at. How often do you see posts on forums asking if a job is possible to do yourself or best left to an adult? That's because people want to know, and want to have a go at it, but need a bit of encouragement - b*gger all of which they get from the mags.
  2. Al, There's an H14W hydro (or mech) setup in my garden doing nothing, technically it's DD's but I'm sure he could be persuaded to part with it. Missing the hydro PTO (not that it'd fit a mog) but everything else is there inc. pump.
  3. You mean that's not what they're for? I've been doing it all wrong then
  4. It doesn't, it's the dealer talking bulwarks - pretty sure it'll be the K&N oil killing the hotwire Silly diseasal things, if you had a proper engine with a MAP sensor none of this would happen
  5. It's just a hydraulic accumulator with a 12v solenoid on the end so it releases pressure on switch-off isn't it? Surely if the turbo timer was automatic you wouldn't need to educate the missus, other than making sure she doesn't leave it in gear
  6. Except your dumb clockwork engine can't talk to technology like this and if you're fitting this dash the chances are you're running without a distributor and with proper fuel injection, thus are using less fuel and are able to wade just as deep as the diesel boys. The difference is we can go up a hill without using 100% throttle and battling to keep it on boost
  7. Yes, it luvverly. You do still need a snorkel though, and removing the sparky tape round the old airflow meter could be a good idea before going off-road I have some spare drainpipe here if you wanna make a snorkel?
  8. Seems that hotwire MAF's really don't like filter oil, I can understand why. I'm using an ITG filter at the moment simply because someone gave it to me but I am not convinced about it's filtration properties and may well go back to paper. I can understand running a cleanable one in very poor conditions where you could clean it every day without deterioration. I may well "demote" the ITG to off-roading duties and use paper for long haul / everyday. One question - when you re-oil a K&N, where does all the dirty oil end up? If we have established that the filter material is not fine enough to catch dirt on its own, when you coat it with oil what's to stop the dirt going through to the inside and then being ingested, with some oil, into the engine?
  9. Full land rover gear ratios here. And yes, portals and a proper engine mean 1.003:1 LT230 is worth having. They're also made much nicer IMHO.
  10. My big boss is a yank, first call I had with him he said "I want to get you into solutions mode on this" my measured response was "You're f***ed then, aren't you?"
  11. Sorry Rog, really I am Waterproofing ideas, touch-screen is tricky but if you want "set it up and forget" then you can do a lot worse than a visit to Tesco's:
  12. Dan - remember St. P on day 1: "You must be Rob" "Yeah, hi" "Bye" Mark - yes I've sent him a link, if he gets through the e-mail that far I'll be amazed, if he bothers coming here I'll be impressed, if he actually bothers to post I may have to subscribe again
  13. LCDash - touch-screen dashboard for MegaSquirt & (in the future) OBD-II. This is very high up my want list now as it replaces quite a few gauges, and they are working on external gauges & speedo/odo functionality too.
  14. That's what most car mags do - a mate used to work for Max Power and all they did was sit about phoning people up and saying "If you fit your stuff to my car I'll write a nice review" seems to be what most of the LR mags do too by way of "reviews" and "tech" all you get is "Supplier X sent us this thing, and so-and-so Ltd. fitted it for us in their well equipped workshop" woo, yay, tech... Oh and I've just cancelled my TOR subs and e-mailed Alan Kidd telling him why, wonder if he'll even read it
  15. And I'm not even a mechanic In case my boss is reading - I don't get paid enough either
  16. Jez - why not price up having a batch of complete 8074's made up, got to be a market for 'em
  17. Will, What about something like this: Or this:
  18. Hmmm, sounds like b*ll*cks to me. I don't know what the construction of the MAF is (anyone got a piccy?) but I'm struggling to see how it could be damaged by air. One thing I would try is reverting back to a normal air filter to see if the K&N is letting too much carp through (they do let more through than a paper filter), if it does the trick just fit a bigger (EG 110 V8) filter housing and paper filter. Edit: Of course, forgot the K&N is oiled, what a very bad idea fit a paper filter or just a non-oily type
  19. You can buy new cushions etc. from most places but Exmoor seem to the be the place for pukka seating. My seats are exmoor refurbs and they're luvverly (in the black "Land Rover" fabric, very bling ) I'd be wary of sporty/buckety seats as they may seem like a good idea on paper but you'll get peed off clambering in and out of them all day.
  20. Bill, a damaged oil cooler hose / oil cooler will drop all the fluid out of an auto. OK it's not common but it's eminently possible. Less so with a manual (no cooler on most) - the point was "survivability", so the manual wins there IMHO. As I said in my first post, there's very little in it really and either will do the job, they're just different. I've only had one starter go, and have found you can buy solenoids separately which is a bonus.
  21. Yep, fill it up and cycle it a few times until the pump quietens down.
  22. Yes, I've got Wipac lights from paddocks on the 109 and they're cack - half of the threaded bits for the lens screws split apart and that was from the packet, undoing the lens to put the bulb in! It's another example of paddocks selling stuff that's too cheap - charge me 50p extra per light and make them properly FFS
  23. Sodbury sortout would be the place for autojumble, you can find almost anything there.
  24. As it happens I've just finished re-fitting the snorkel to the 109 (rain stopped play ) so here's a photo - I'll admit it's not super elegant but it was cheap - three bends in some 2.5" SS exhaust pipe from exhaust monkeys, a shop soiled Mantec top, three exhaust clamps and a bit of bent strip to make the top bracket. Joiny-uppy hoses from LR (Series diesel air cleaner "elephant trunk" hose about £10) and Hyphose (Wyrem 70mm ID ducting to meet 200TDi air filter mouth), joined with a drainpipe elbow-joiny-bit from Wickes. If I did it again (and didn't therefore have a hole in the side of my bonnet already) I'd use a straight bit of 3" pipe, no bends and just some Wyrem hose to join it up since the filter is now on the passenger side.
