  1. Amazing to hear of such good service from ADAC; in stark contrast and as a final nail in the AA coffin for me, I took out European AA cover a few years ago on a 1992 defender - same reaction regarding its age etc. Total cost (as memory serves) was around £160 for about 10 days cover. Part way through a week's mountain biking in the Alps, we managed to snap the ignition key off in the barrel. Being short of time and tools, we called the AA to see what they could do. After some back-and-forth, the short answer from them was "you're not covered because the small print states that you should have brought a spare key with you". The fact that a spare key would have been no use when half of the old one was jammed in the barrel, and that the cover was taken out over the phone 24 hours before we left so there WAS no small print didn't seem to cut the mustard. They wouldn't budge so we lost a day of the holiday searching for locksmiths and motor-factors in a borrowed car. Worst £160 I ever spent
  2. I can see plenty of Brixton drug dealers snapping it up at that price....
  3. I'd second what mike4444244 said really and make it 4p. I'm a Paramedic in london with a bit of experience on expeditions and i'm always struck by how little I can do to help when I come across an accident/emergency in the street and don't happen to have an ambulance full of kit behind me. In the UK, knowing the basics and keeping your knowledge fresh will do you a lot more good than a huge kit full of obscure items that get used so rarely that you have a constant job just making sure they're in date and serviceable. Basic life support/airway management....know how to stop a serious bleed....charged phone......do what the 999 call taker tells you. Simples. Dan (bored, killing time before a night shift)
  4. Do you mean the fixings for the waist cappings? If so, it's MUC3186 for the clip and AJU1136L for the anchor bit. Hope that helps
  5. I do know what you mean and I certainly don't have money to throw around, I just think that if more people were less precious with their stuff then you wouldn't have to work hard to buy every item you need because you could borrow, say, a tool you'll rarely use from a friend and spend a bit of the saving buying them a beer by way of thanks. I'm probably being a bit idealistic or even naive but I just can't see any long term good for any of us to be the other way.
  6. I'm firmly in the hippie camp; i'd rather lose the odd tool or bit of cash than live in a world where no one trusts anyone. Also, I see things like Land Rovers in the same way I see whisky - much more enjoyable when shared with a fellow appreciator!
  7. Again, if it will fit on/in a 110, I could possibly help; No firm dates yet but i go every couple of months from Tonbridge to Herefordshire/Gloucestershire so i'm sure something could be sorted.
  8. X-secure pedal? X-safe pedal? Nice job - looking forward to seeing it on the market
  9. I thought that might raise an eyebrow or two! Not cheap at all but I suppose it depends on your outlook. I covered the chainstay of my mountain bike in this stuff after spending silly money on sticky carbon pads that fall off after a few rides. 5 years later it hasn't budged and I don't have the expense of replacing a frame with lots of holes worn through it by cable rub etc so I reckon it's worth it.....
  10. I use 'helicopter tape' here and there. It's amazingly hard-wearing and can be used safely on bodywork. Apparently it's original intended use was to protect the leading edge of helicopter blades from grit/debris etc. Can be cut to shape easily so it goes a long way. Relatively cheap here: http://www.justridingalong.com/copter-tape.html
  11. The Halfords concentrate stuff makes for better value in summer but when you're diluting it 2:1 for winter I don't think it represents any better value for money than the pre-mix. I've been wondering about a meths/water mix - has anyone done any experiments? Maybe I should just be less stingy!
  12. I guess this isn't strictly Land rover related but with the amount of screen wash I get through in my 110, it seems relevant... Just wondered if anyone has used any alternatives to proper screen wash that has the same properties but isn't so expensive - £6 for 5 litres seems like silly money to me
  13. I'm new to the land rover thing. An inexperienced home mechanic but happy to tinker. I have a fairly pronounced 'judder' when i pull off from standing or on the over-run at low speed - sounds like there's play somewhere but i'm after advice on the order I should be checking things. The UJ's are new, as are the rear A-frame bushes but that's as far as i've got... Any ideas? Cheers guys
  14. Don't think this will be much use to anyone, but just to add to the info on here - My 1986 110 Hard top 200tdi conversion is listed as 'saloon' on the V5 and comes up as exempt on the checker. Not sure if this is something to do with it being ex MOD? Who knows. I just count myself lucky!
  15. Genius. For the record, I also have zero sympathy for someone who spends 48k on a car and doesn't bother to insure it
  16. Done. Lets try to keep this at the top of the list!
  17. Added value seems like strange logic to me - you won't get back the cost of a galv chassis if you're selling the truck afterwards, and I know my mind would be thoroughly at rest if my chassis was only 3 years old, not 25!
  18. @simonr - thanks for the extra info! More detail than my tiny mind can cope with, but interesting stuff, cheers
  19. Lovely, cheers guys. That was my first thought but then I started thinking that drilling some holes might be a good way to empty the box sections of all the rust that's rattling around inside and introduce some waxoyl! Maybe i'll make my life easier and just leave it.
  20. Hi guys, Just a quick question - I'm working on some home-made sills and wondering what diameter tubing would be required to pass through them for holes to use a high-lift jack? Thanks in advance!
  21. Hmm, now i'm in two minds - i'm thinking if i stick an angled baffle in place rather than cutting a hole, it'll just clean up the air flow and potentially improve (accelerate) it more than making the hole bigger..... ideas from cleverer people from me welcome!
  22. I'd be interested to know a little more about the 'depth perception/ LED' thing. If that's true, I find it strange that LED lights have become ubiquitous in the night-time mountain biking world over the past few years - a sport where depth perception at speed is vital. Also the fact that bike lights like this: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=24167 put out a similar lumin count for a quarter of the price and in an extremely well built package manufactured in the uk makes me think that the 4x4 guys are taking us for a ride. Oh, and does 'a ball bearing dropped from 1m' sound like a rigorous military test to anyone else? If it was a snooker ball i'd be impressed...
  23. Oh to have a pocket full of money and some time to play!
