  1. I had an 98 auto and it was a pain to start unless everything was perfect. I would go for the lift pump advice first as cheap and easy to do. Lynall
  2. You dont just reoil them, they have to be cleaned first which as stated is a pain, in the kit you get some degreaser which you clean filter with wash in water, then dry in airing cupboard then reoil. Lynall
  3. Why? is a defender any cheaper to run than a disco? Lynall
  4. No not the same fittings but as its a landrover never say never. D2 brakes are fantastic compared to D1 brakes, very confidence inspiring. Lynall
  5. Use the proper stuff as its tiddle thin wouldnt recomend engine oil at all especially if you have an air flow meter or maf as the oil will upset the readings. The proper oil lasts for years as you use very little when cleaning the filter. Lynall
  6. Now on 94k bought it with 50k and its had a head gasket and a radiator plus other minor carp some sensors etc exhaust gasket but nothing big or expensive. All the time i have had it it has been tuned in one form or another, now with td5alive tune, k+n, boost controller, egt gauge, boost gauge. Oil every 5k all filters every 10k oil cheap engines bloody dear. Lynall
  7. I gave my mate a hand the other day to replac the clutch in his p38 diesel and i noticed there was quite a bit of play in the gearbox input shaft but only the faintest tell tale of an oil leak from the seal. So i reckon do as you have done new seal and monitor afterwards. Lynall
  8. Both of my last to 300tdi cracked the oil ring on number 4 cyl, i also found this by changing the glow plugs. But there was no excess smoke, or lack of power of unusual oil consumption. Engine can be stripped and rebuilt whilst in the car nice and simple engine to work on. Lynall
  9. Fuel return is from number one injector down to pump On side of pump is two screws one is max revs other is idle screw, maybe throttle cable to tight. Ticking noise could be the vac pump mounted behind the injector pump. Lynall
  10. Frien runs hus tranny on used veg oil and told me the other day he soon wont have to pay any duty at all and as he gets the oil for nowt his fuel bill is nearly zero! Lynall
  11. Also if the fuel cap itself is not pointing in line with the vehicle it will not let the lid shut. Took me a while when i first got mine Lynall
  12. Fit ring of spanner over drain plug hold onto plug with palm of hand then hit the other end of the spanner forwards with a hammer copper type best but any will do. Use this method all the time on trucks and works a treat. Lynall
  13. Google TD5Alive, he does most of the DOC vehicles including mine and it shifts , discount for DOC members. Lynall
  14. This is my 4th disco and the third that i have removed the egr completeley, cant say i noticed any difference but as they were all chipped/tuned any minor differences would not be as notable as on a std car. My current motor is a TD5 and i fitted the complete EGR removal kit from TD5alive, easy to fit and as alrady said removes a load of carp fom the engine bay. Lynall

Had my last 98 TDI fitted with a tunit chip, utter carp! Up to see jjf chip and cooler and it flew, was not to impressed with the quality of the work Holes cut in the headlight panel for the intercooler pipes left bare metal and all swarf left in the bottom The alloy pipes that joined the silicone pipes had the ends flared with pliers yes really not a rolling machine. Lynall
  16. Take of noise deadening cover, and look for oil around between the inlet manifold and cyl head indicating a blown gasket my last one did this. You will not get full boost at a standstill even revved flat out. Worth checking Les,s suggestion as i have also had the small plastic pipe split on the M4 uphill and i thought the engine had stopped, talk about gutless. Lynall
  17. I have had the pistons out of both of my last 300 and the 200 before all had cracked an oil ring on three and four. Did whole thing in situ def worth honing bores, did not remove oil jets, used wd40 as a lubricant, wiped clean and dropped it all back together again. Cheap honing tools on e-bay I love pushrod engines as they are so easy to do. Which is of course why i now have a TD5 Lynall
  18. I had same thing happen to my old 300 edc auto, red hot summers day air con on came of motorway into heavy traffic and after about 1/2 hour the elec fan i had fitted could not cope, gauge never moved but the engine went into limp home mode and i had to pull over lift bonnet and let cool for half an hour before i got home and refitted the viscous fan and never had any more bother. So i reckon replace the rad and thermostat and check the resistance of the fan cold and hot. Lynall
  19. Do the pump tweaks first as it make a massive difference, i did mine on my old 200 and when i sold it, it had done 150k the last 50k of these tuned to hell, pump wound up, higher boost, large intercooler and alsorts of twoddle to eak out the last bit of performance. Lynall
  20. Whoops i meant like this, the worn bit is the thin white line
  21. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Pic of worn track The worn bit is the thin white line at the top of the 4 black lines this is where it has actually worn through. 22. Pedal £46, clutch switch £6 clutch, switch easy to change but will need bleeding, throttle pedal easy to get out fun refitting the nuts on reassembly. Changed mine as the revs were not dropping instantly when changing gear and it now drives better and smoother. Still has the 2 cms of dead pedal though! Take the old pedal apart and look at the track and you will see where its worn away. Lynall
  23. You presume correctly Lynall
  24. You are not tensioning the belt to much are you? to tight and it will come of the front i know! Lynall
  25. Behind the plastic panel to the right of the throttle pedal bit of a toss to get out. Are you chipping it? Lynall
