I would steer clear of the Freelander if i was you. I had one for a couple of years and it went wrong a lot. Also the bits aren't cheap. I have now got a proper Land Rover and am chuffed 15 months on. Oh yes it breaks down but when it does its a lot cheaper to fix. Hope this helps Chris

Freelanders are ok off road in my experience, they just go wrong too often, and the bits aint cheap either.

Going on past experience- stay clear of Freelander 1 for defo.

Based on my own experience on MAN vehicles, i would stay well clear. At my work we have approx 40 MAN vehicles. Regular issues with diagnostics shutting engines down or going into limp home mode. Auto transmissions do not select correct gear on steep terrain. Traction virtually non-exsistant in wet. Snow-forget it. 4 instances of water in fuel system costing £12000 a time to repair. Terrible build quality. Regular breakdowns. Poor customer care- example, broke down last monday in a MAN urban artic. Local dealer came out and locate fault to an air distibution valve. Rang his dealer up to locate a replacement. Guess where nearest part was? Germany!!! and i was in York. Took 'til Friday for the part to come and us to get the unit back. See if Volvo do anything appropriate, just stay clear of MAN's, as my employer is, once their lease runs out!! Hope this helps. Chris

Nick, are you in Ossett with a black n red 90? If so i bought them tyres off you t'other month off t-ebay! I used to use express tyres years ago- for tyres. I didn't know they did repairs. Don't forget Simon Services n all, can't praise him enough. He's pressed bushes n gave me a few freebies too and he even opens sundays! Hey Gaz, what defender have you got is it a tdi? Ayup Gaz, how did you get on with the fan? I forgot to mention that Cooper Bridge scrappers is now a building site! There is also a scrap yard in Horbury opposite from Ship pub between taxi place and granite worktop showroom. Let me know how you get on as i'm thinking about doing same thing to mine. I got them from Simon Services in Wakefield(Independant Land Rover Specialist) unfortunately they are Br£tpa%t but thats all he had available and i fitted them with engine cold as it was quicker to change 'em then start the landy as it flatted battery day before as wouldn't start til about 20mins of pre heating!!!! I got mine on my insurance when they asked over the phone if it was heated the word 'yes' just slipped out cost me £25 excess and a little bit of wiring which i did myself. no one ever questioned it. Yeah, this stuff says its got tiny air molecules within the paint which prevents condensation. The roof on my 110 hardtop suffers quite badly from condensation so thats why i was thinking bout painting it.

Just had a look at Ashcrofts site- £495 for a gearbox and £445 for transfer box. so with clutch kit, VAT and fuel to transport it darn sarf, it'll tot up to about £1500 and i'll have to fit it myself! Think i'll may just stick with Mr Local recon

Hello all. I've been have having issues with my gearbox(noisy synchro's and whining a bit too) for a couple of months so changed transfer and gearbox oil a couple of weekends ago. Oil that came ok of transfer box was ok but g-box was another matter. Lots of mettalic sludge basically. Still whines and crunches though not quite as bad, so i am gonna have to bite the bullett and get it re-conditioned. Phoned a local gearbox specialist that does a lot of these and the helpful chap reckons with a few seals bearings and synchros i will be looking at £250 to £350 and thats with the box removed from car and delivered to them. Is that a fair price 'cause i'll be looking at nearly another £100 for clutch. Also has anyone else stripped n fixed an R380 and what sort of job is it like? Cheers in advance.

Fitted new heater plugs this morning and she fired up straightaway. That was one of the few jobs that has gone to plan. Only another 1279 jobs left to do...

Just done mine this morning, took bout half an hour,(that includes time for re-warming fingers) and only £17 +VAT for a set! Not too bad.
