  1. http://www.stakesys.co.uk/department/tube_bender_machines/ the protools 105 bender is near identical to the JD2 bender.
  2. seeing a tiny hole like that and resorting to a galv chassis is a little extreme!! That hole is completely repairable, and before a chassis swap is on the cards id think about a replacement rear crossmember. (ofcourse this is said without knowing the condition of the rest of the chassis)
  3. Im not going to run vented disks as they fill with mud and wear your brake pads down like crazy. This truck is never ever destined to go on the road, and wont ever see speeds above 30mph. a pair of 300tdi defender (be it 90/110/130) front callipers should do the job. And rear callipers are easy, i shall interrogate the chap at the local LR shop tomorrow!
  4. Exactly what i wanted to hear, thankyou!
  5. i shall buy a couple of unions and have a play, cheers! nobody know about the front calipers?
  6. i found this very interesting http://www.britishv8.org/Articles/2007-TechSession6.htm
  7. Right, Im currently building a challenge vehicle and I need someone to help me fathom out what callipers i should be using. I am using some 24spline axles off a late 200tdi L reg discovery On the rear axle it has callipers like this This is all well and good and easily/cheaply replaceable and rebuild-able. What thread and size is the union that goes into this? i imagine its a imperial thread as 10mm unions wont fit. OR what callipers will fit the axle brackets and accept a metric union? On the front axle it has twin brake line callipers - which i would like to scrap and replace with some single brake line callipers. Now I think i could get some off a defender? am i correct in thinking this? Or am i correct in thinking on the front of a 300tdi nonABS discovery they have single line callipers? All help appreciated!
  8. i was also looking at these... Id be very interested to see what could be done with them!
  9. Sorry.... why dont you just buy a 90?
  10. I think everybody needs to go to the gym and grow some leg muscles!!
  11. Ive made several special tools and I always put them in that "important place where I wont forget where it is"
  12. drain the oil, but i wouldnt worry about the diff to much - as long as your casings not really rusty and your not going to be blowing through it!
  13. The head is off, and all the pushrods are perfect, all the rockers are perfect. Now taken the followers out and we can see the cam is completely out of alignment, some of those little wheel things have been running along side the cams this not moving the follower and push rod. Now just got to workout how its moved... To remove the cam shaft do you have to completely remove the timing chest?
  14. Right, my friends 200tdi is very poorly, it had a terrible terrible knock, so we presumed big ends thus took the engine out did the big ends and piston rings put it back together and started to wind the engine over by hand and stil clunk clunk, so we took the timing cover off and the bolt out the end of the camshaft had come out and been chattering againt the timing chest cover. Annd his 6 month old timing belt had partially eaten its self. Now.... Is it possible that the cam shaft can have jiggled forward or backwards? we have taken off the inspection cover and the follows don't look inline with the cams? Is it supposed to be like this? Only the second third and seventh followers actually go up down...... Has the cam shaft snapped?! Seriously need help!!
  15. Just a quick update on this thread, upon inspection of my axles which i presumed were 10spine (from a 1993 200tdi disco) They're actually 24 spline internals!
  16. and the front axles have a UJ's instead of CV's (i think?)
  17. longer shocks for sure. Not really sure why people fit lowering mounts because its silly to have a spring that tall in there!
  18. John, can you supply all this? I appreciate not pipes as they will be different on most vehicles. And once you have one winch, to add another saley winch its only going to cost you £2000 (not sure if thats inc. VAT) for the winch and then another manual spool valve £80 and pipes £100ish. (total £2180) basically, why wouldnt you buy a set? For £4860 you can have an absolutely bullet proof top spec competition winch setup. for two GP84's its £7380 (inc. VAT) and then you have to add cables, isolators, battery's and alternators. People seem to be scared of hydraulics, for what reason I don't know. I work and live on a farm, every vehicle and implement we use has some kind of hydraulics on it. They very very very rarely fail. The most common failure is pipe fatigue and splitting due to not mounting and protecting the pipes correctly. That is completely avoidable by making sure everything is protected.
  19. So go on then, how much is a Saley winch? We all know the prices of GP's and others? (if it is already published somewhere ive missed it completely )
  20. Brilliant cheers Carl! Ill get looking round breakers yards!
  21. Right, i have gathered you can get different kinds of steering units.... can anyone shed any light quite what they are and what im looking for on the bottom of steering units? how to decode the numbers etc? Thanks
  22. for 27 plus vat (or atleast something close to that) you can buy a pair of 6ton axle stands from..... PADDOCKS!
  23. Zim, fancy posting up specs of clutch and pump and where/what they're off/from? Also some nice pictures of how everything is mounted and stuff would be perfect!
  24. I shall be in contact soon John (probably tomorrow)
  25. Thats an interesting way to do it, that would allow me to disengage the winch pump and still have my hydraulic steering. Also it would keep my hydraulic steering very simple. So I should perhaps buy THIS and then use the ZF74 for my steering and buy THIS to drive my winch. Thats excellent thankyou very much! Thanks for that Carl, Im looking for reliability that doesnt break the bank. For the price of two gigglepins I could.. well everyone knows how incredibly expensive they are! I can see my front hydro winch install, being less than 2000 quid another only the cost of the winch, pipe and valves. So infact i could end up with two winchs for less than the price of a single gigglepin. This is my first challenge truck build, so im not aiming to win any races at the moment, just get onto the scene and complete a couple of challenges! Another question, does a milemarker fit into a 8274 winch mount? Thanks, more input welcome!
