  1. Piston rings are stuck. I am going to strip the engine down do what you have to the top end and put new rings and hone the block. My block is a lovely golden colour in the valleys so I think it has been well looked after.
  2. It has happened twice I hope for it never to happen again. Have been this PM to collect a V8 for my Rangie and have now covered 400 miles without an issue so I think I can safely say it is sorted. Thanks for the help everyone.
  3. Thanks Mo I had a spare Intercooler so have fitted that and dried out the pipes. Drove about 100 miles today and everything seems fine so hopefully now I can go back to sorting my Range Rover.
  4. Double trouble. My last engine blew the turbo and ate the engine so I scourced another and fitted it and have done a few thousand miles. On Wednesday I was 6 miles from home and smelled burning, I stopped looked the car over, with the engine running, but couldn't find anything. Within about 20 yards I got smoke comming out of the gear lever and as I was at a junction of two major roads decided to keep going until I could park safely. As I pulled out of the junction the revs hit the ceiling so I turned the key and crashed the gearbox stalling the engine and rolled to a halt. Was recovered home. Yesterday I bought a second hand turbo from a reputable reseller and have just spent a couple of hours fitting it. Started and ran fine made sure there was no funny noises and switched off. Repeated a couple of times and there reconnected all of the air intake. Started it again and all of a sudden the revs hit the ceiling and there was a huge cloud of white smoke. Managed to jump in and stall again. I have removed the air intake and checked the turbo, there is no play restarted and it ran fine and revved fine repeated a few time and all ok. I have still to reconnect the air intake but I feel I am missing something. I don't really want to take it for a run until I know I have checked it thouroughly but would appreciate some ideas. My brother has suggested that I clean out the intercooler with petrol. Help greatly appreciated.
  5. The pressure should be around 150psi. I know cos mine has between 50 and 75psi and that is far too low to allow it to start.
  6. I was recommended to us block sealer from a very reputable local engineer and it is/was a very thin liquid which sealed the leak by filling the hole with a microscopic skim of ceramic. It didn't work the first time but after a second try it worked perfectly. That was on my CSK when the block went pourous. There are lots of "modern stuff" that works great and doesn't fur up the system.
  7. I used a blocksealer in my CSK must be 17 years ago and it sorted it no problem with no residual gunk. Did 10k in it with this before Iparked it up. I need to get this restored soon it is breaking my heart.
  8. It was worth it at the time and I have certaily had my money out of it having covered 50k in 6 years with the last two parked up. The bodywork needs some welding done, inner wings and rear wheel arches have rusted so that is the major work that needs done however the next real job is the offside rear wing which is dented and will replace the headcloth at the same time.
  9. Definately go with the 12mm bolts. I had a front towbar fitted to mine and managed to pull the top fixing bolts out of the chassis with the rotational force of pushing a trailer
  10. I found out that my chassis was made of swiss cheese 3 months after I had bought it. Now sits on a galvanised chassis which is the only reason I keep regenerating it.
  11. The list of work is finally making in roads. Have changed the engine, the front swivel ball joints, replaced the front bumper upgraded the headlights. Now I need to fix a diesel leak, replace the rear quarter and wing. Replace the head cloth and fix the leaking sunroof. All in all I feel I am getting somewhere just need to think about getting started on the P38
  12. Thanks guys. The speedo can be as much as 5mph over especially at higher speeds.
  13. My Discovery came with 255 55 18 tyres however along the way I have aquired and now use 255 60 18's I noticed that the speed on the speedo is less than the speed on my GPS and I am more likely to beleive my GPS. This got me thinking when I refuel, I always run full to empty and always rest my trip, if my speed is out them my mileage must also be out. Given that the rolling diametre of a 55 is less than a 60 I must be covering more ground. The question is how much more?
  14. I have done the heads and the cam on a 3.5 and have stripped down but not rebuilt a 4.6 bottom end so have done most of the work. I have now put 20ml of diesel in each of the bores tonight so as I am away for the weekend I will leave it for a week before I try and start her.Fingers crossed that she will fire up.
  15. Bowie yes that is a very good point. You couldn't get much further away but the offer is appreciated and if you are ever passing then you will be welcome for a brew just look for a house with multiple Range Rovers and a Discovery all in black 🤣
  16. FF Agree with you but it is my pride and joy. and they charged me £217 to change the spark plugs and seal no 8 injector, and compression test the engine 😲 I will try putting diesel down the bores and see if we can get the rings to free off. Aparrently two or more bores were at 50psi and a couple at 75psi. None of them were good enough to seal so I could be fighting an uphill struggle. The garage reconned that the piston rings were broken.
  17. Excellent. The garage was saying that the car wasn't worth the money to repair it. Other than the engine I just need to get some new locks on it and sort a few scratches and dings it acquired in storage.
  18. So from what I am hearing it just needs some gentle coaxing to get it running properly.
  19. Why ATF? The garage used oil and my brother suggested diesel. I am not sure if the car will start. I appreciate that once running it should heat up and free everything off. Now I know what the problem is I am quite happy to try and work away at it.
  20. Had my p38 in the garage to be checked to see why it wasn't starting and it transpires that after some fettling they got the car to fire but when checked the compression across the engine was down at 50psi. Not sure yet which bores but the engine has been sitting since October 2016 not doing anything and prior to that is was lying outside for a further 2 years. My thinking is that the rings have stuck . The garage assures me that I have a spark and fuel and everything else is fine it is just the lack of compression. What I want to know is what can I do to free the rings?
  21. Was initially thinking a budget of £5k but am now thinking £15k+ and get a lowish milage 2010 or newer.
  22. About 30k. But I am getting my P38 and my Disco back on the road with the intention of sharing the milage around 4 cars. A V8 petrol doesn't scare me but I was told to avoid them due to overheating complictions.
  23. Bishbosh Was speaking yesterday to the local Land Rover specialist when I was booking on my P38. We were discussing the L322 and he is of the same opinion as you. Certainly go for the TDV8 and if at all possible go for the 4.4 over the 3.6. So a dilemma. Do I but the 3.6 with cash or do I take a loan for a 4.4.
  24. The price of an EGR from Rimmers is £234.00 each and assuming I need 2 that is close to £500.00. So that and a gearbox service are rocommended from the get go for piece of mind. Doesn't seem to be too difficult. And a blanking kit can be bought for £35.00 giving more pover and better mpg 😈😈 Overall you guys seem happy with your cars despite them costing dosh to keep on the road but that is the joy of owning a Range Rover or two or in my case three.😮
  25. Am looking from 2005 to 2010 depending on miles, spec, condition etc. Have seen a couple of Overfinch's which I really like otherwise I am very open. Looking at the price of the 4.4TDV8 I am thinking it os out of the budget even doing a finance option it would mean going for a high mileage which I really want to avoid. There is only a couple of things that are immovable, it has to be black and have a cream or lightstone leather lol.
