  1. .....

At the suggestion of one of the banks, I have Trusteer Rapport installed on my home PC, and blocking keyloggong is apparently one of its attributes. I'm just interested if someone is apparently collecting my keystrokes at the receiving end.

    Cheers.

You may be interested in a talk I attended recently about Trusteer Rapport, there is more than a little snake oil in the security world....

  2. My first thought would be to check the condition of the belt and the tension. I had it on mine that it was slow to catch up with the revs and over about 2k rpm it wouldn't get much faster. Belt was shredded and loose.

Doesn't sound that likely as Sean said his rev counter drops to zero when he goes over 3000rpm, if it was just slipping then it would stay steady or creep up/down.

I'd place bets on it being something electrical breaking down, whether it be in the rev counter or alternator I don't know. Any chance of testing it on another alternator?

  3. I just got a nice new britpart fog switch

It is always on regardless of switch position!

    Great

At least you don't need to worry about whether you have switched it off now :) What a great way to avoid those nagging thoughts, maybe they could come up with some similar products... like fuel tanks with no bottom so you never need to worry if you are going to run out of fuel ;)

  4. The voltage dropped across a resistance (bad connection in this case) is proportional to the current flow. So in the case of a test meter where a tiny tiny current is flowing there is only a very small voltage dropped. A test lamp requires far more current to light up so will make the poor connection obvious by not lighting or glowing dimly as the voltage is dropped across the poor connection.

You use the test lamp by connecting one side to a good +12v and the the other to the earth you are trying to test. If you need to test a positive wire connect one side to a known good earth.

  5. I agree with you Si making everyone aware of how easy it is helps them to stay safe and as you quite rightly say the only way to stay safe is to use a VPN.

It is even possible to intercept data comms over the mobile networks now, although this requires investment in some hardware (about £1000) where as attacking wifi is possible without spending a penny as all the tools can be freely downloaded.

  6. When I was moving around my replacement 300tdi I knocked up a little stand to bolt it to so it would stay upright. I did this as when I collected it I had stood it on the sump with a few supporting blocks and ratchet strapped it down, when I went around a corner it shifted with quite a bang that 'scared me somewhat'. The little stand added about half inch to the height but gave a much bigger foot print to stop it wobbling/falling over.

Although I guess this is probably not practical unless you have a V8 kicking around to get the position of the bolt holes, you could probably take some blocks of wood to support it but learning from my mistake also take some plywood to nail/screw them to so they don't move! :)

  7. thats all true but if its a 100% air tight then there's no problem? when the galv'ed disappears(how ever is does?) the the doors will still have 15-20 left! filling the doors of wax in going to be quite a bit of dead weight? and to insert it would involve drilling it, which would then decrease its lift expectancy surly?

I doubt he actually means totally fill it as it would ooze out on hot days and be a nightmare, probably means generously spray. I doubt weight would be an issue.

  8. Nige,

Hidden wireless SID and WPA2-PSK security .....does that make you feel any better ?

Hidden SSID's can be seen quite easily with the right tools like kismet as the clients basically end up 'broadcasting' the network they connect to.

I assume you aren't but make sure you aren't using the default wireless key for your router as a number of routers have trivially calculated wireless keys that can be found in seconds as they are derived from algorithms taking things like SSID/serial number/mac address as the starting point, as an example one manufacturer based them on a combination of serial number and Jimi Hendrix song http://homepage.eircom.net/~seanmcintyre/broadband.html

I don't know what your tech level is so please accept my apologies if I'm teaching you to suck eggs.

  9. One of each please, a tea urn, a fridge and a microwave.

I don't want any more cars, I can't keep up with the work on the 2 I've got ! :) But maybe a Scammel Explorer if I had to choose something !

    Mo

Maybe you could have a dirtydiesel i the dream garage to do some of the work for you? Then you could have a few more cars :)
