  1. I meant which auto are you going to run? The LR spec 727 is weak compared to a proper 727
  2. A mate of mine is looking to replace the small block V8 in his **-*** It's a 350Chev lump, put in there by myself almost 17 years a 280k miles ago. I re-built it before fitting. It is currently fitted to a TH400 and Nissan remote T box I have suggested three options Re-build the 350. Cheap as chips load of power. All the bits are there blah blah Buy in an LO5Chev lump for pennies, use the projection system off the 350 blah blah ****** or ***** Diesel He is unsure. He has been told the Magnum 5.9ltr version of the Chrysler LA318 is a better engine (it's not, it's pooh on a stick) And he likes the older Dodge 302/318 as well What other options are there? It's got to fit the TH400
  3. How strong is a Viscous Coupling/Borg Warner jobbie? Like Detroits/Trutracks it's a much better way to max traction but just how strong are they.
  4. I hope Petes Tractor didn't go up - nice motor that (1500hp)
  5. Don't you mean the R380 is simply a weaker version of the LT77, more prone failure when subject to low maintenance but with reverse in a nicer place
  6. I have always thought it to be about the strongest bit of kit that LR made out of the box. The Aussies seem to like it, as do the Bu****es accross the pond. I have never put more than about 400bhp and 500ft/lb through a standard one and that was with a TH700 to take the initial oooomph. I have never had much luck with the LT95 over 350ish bhp/400ish ft/lb - snapped main shaft with 5.28:1 diff gears, and 35x15.50x15 Mickey T's. The Hybrid used to eat them when it had the Eales 4.6 in it, but both the RRC racers managed fine... I know the R380 is named after it's max torque figure but I think the LT230 is named after something else - like the number of cups of tea drunk during it's design or the amount of oil (in Pints) it leaks in one year..
  7. About as clear as muddy water on a stormy day in November. So no actual point or decision there then
  8. The EP9 is the best VFM winch on the market and is the dogs dangley bits But for what you are doing there is a new winch out in the New Year, a Bowyered T-max 9.5 OUTBACK. Stronger clutch/freespool with a better design, better waterproofing, better solenoids. Not quick but massively powerful - this winch is sold as a 9.5/10/11/12 K pulling ability depending which country sells it and where they get the stickers made. DB has rated it at a 'Comfortable' 9.5K. IIRC it will retail at about 275 ex VAT. Okay it's not quick but it wees all over the Champion and is far better made than the AEW/GEW/Britpart family in standar T-max form. The Outback is the Southern Hemisphere version which comes highly rated and as we all know anything that has been sorted by DB is always good. The new commercial version of the EP9 is out in the new year as well. All parts can be bought seperately to up grade your existing winch (gues what I am going to do?) The Husky is a great winch - one of the very best, but it is bl**dy expensive, heavy and slow and the EP9 is just as reliable, stronger in the pull and has just as effective a braking ability; oh and it weighs about half as much and draws far less power at max pull/ The Husky is an old design and like the 8274, it is simple outclassed in this modern age of winches unless 'Overhauled' to the max. The other option is go hydraulic. Forget the MileMarker, go for a Superwinch H8 with a PTO pump and tank - loverly!
  9. David Bowyer sells black ones and red ones as do OEC4x4. IIRC they are a snadge less than a quid but I won't swear to it

  11. I couldn't agree more and I find it so bl**dy frustrating. But what do we do? We can't just blame the carp government, I think we have to blame ourselves but how do we make it right again? I honestly wonder why I continue to live here in the UK. I have relatives and job offers in OZ and NZ. My daughter is not yet 8 and my wife is expecting another in late June. I don't want my children to grow up in this country as it is, but I love my country and want my kids to love it as I do. B*gg*r to deep for Christmas
  12. Mercs have gone down hill in the last three years or so but older than that are superb Ford Transits - don't get the new version, they simply don't take abuse. We have two 06 models at work, both tippers and they are far less reliable than the 270K miler/P reg that I drive when not out in the MAN. The traction control is fun though. Nissan do good panel vans - quick and frugal Tony has a damn good point, lease/hire. Renault were doing some amazing deals last year as were Ford. Reliability isn't an issue as you get fast replacement. Ford do overnight servicing on Lease/Hire. I don't like Iveco's, expensive parts and they break when you use them hard. However I am in a minority. My mate Dave has just come back from Mongolia in his Iveco 2.8! It has TC and a winch but is only 2 wheel drive. Nothing broke at all in 18 months travelling.
  13. I would go for an LT every time. They go all the way up to 7.5 tonnes (MAM) The 35 and 40 are the best in humble opinion but the 4.4x4 has Low ratio, Front and Rear Difflocks, runs 265/75x16's and has a PTO - obvious option for Cake shifting on Exmoor
  14. I have been thinking about this. Read the guys website, read his comments and that of his brethren/like minded groups. Sadly, a big old group of us going up there and being annoying is just going to make it worse (an I would have loved to do just that!) We lost greenlanes because of our inability to unite under one banner and supply a powerful, accurate and articulate argument. Those of us who used to shoot lost out for the very same reason. Hunting was the same... We are dealing with clever people who can easily control the inarticulate masses and the 'desperate for a green cause individuals. These people have no need for accurate facts and figures. They have no acceptance of the other side of the argument as they will not accept it (it's known as the Newbury Bypass Syndrome). We don't exactly help ourselves either. At the moment the guy is simply targeting (and causing criminal damage to) 4x4's in Bristol. He won't target vehicles like Matt's or Mine as they are obviously used for work and are 'Countryfied'. If he was to target my wifes motor (and I will be in Bristol over the Christmas period, driving the road biased RRC at some time) then I would make sure I reported him to the Police and start a civil action if the Police were unable to prosecute. Sending someone round to his house with a hammer would NOT be an option. I shall go to his meeting (if AV's allow) but I will wash (Yes Wash!) the 100" first. I may distribute copies of the SLRC Carbon Neutral scheme, Wessex 4x4 Response's role in Emergencies, DORA's activities, Rhino Ark etc etc. I may make mention of the sheer size of the BMW Mini and it's fuel ineffiency. It won't do any good apart from making me feel better. What we need is a concerted effort from US the 4x4 owners. Lets get being the organisiations attempting to defend our high ground, lets look at the bigger picture because we are becoming a target again. Now you have read this, most of you will say "B*ll*cks, not my problem, blokes off amongst the cabbages again, what does he know anyway, bl**dy Care In the Community shouldn't let them go on line without supervision" Fine. Your loss. But maybe you should look at the lessons that have been leanred in the last few years about 'Targeting for Political means'...
  15. I would drive to Bristol for that one. Could get a mate to bring his 101 as well...
  16. Matt Jules is right if you are working on a building construction site - however that's the only place CPCS has any place/credence AND it's still not compulsory for all trades thanks to a failure by the CPCS guys to get off thier arses! CPCS is just another way to flog money out of the 'Trades', just like CITB etc etc Your Lantra course should have been 'Health and Safety & Risk Management in Vehicle Mounted Winching' - who ran it and where?
  17. Ralph Certain parts of LOLER do apply hence there reference in the only HSE approved winching course - but it's only very small exerts Matt if your employers have failed to put you on an approved training course then they are at fault but you need to rasie this with them and with HSE. An approved course would have covered your question.
  18. That's waht my fuel sender sees as a 'Reserve'
  19. Funnily enough Simon didn't seem overly bothered as this is a standard business practice in the real world. This forum and the previous incarnation have had a bee in the bonnet about S C O R P I O N R A C I N G for ages - it just got blatant post LRe/Gree/Lamontage as it could. Scorpion have a place - in fact a strong place - in the market, sell well . make money and produce some fair to middling products. Most of those products are copies of products produced by companies with little or no clout/funds in the legal dept. Every now and then SRmake a mistake and get well and truly warned off, but that takes clout. Heyho, such is life.
  20. I find the underseat more than adequate - about 330miles between fill and yellow light I have aquired a tank that between the seat boxes and takes up about half the rear floor to a hight of about 12". That gives me approx just over 1K more miles. In fact motorway cruising at 65mph should equate to a total of about 1.4K miles. But that is for my next foray to foreign climes
  21. My 100" is a bobbed, shortened 110. It is about 3" longer in the overhang than a 90 and uses a 90 underseat tank. If you want picces let me know.
  22. Chris I don't recognise those two names as towns in Devon. Please confirm that you are not running this even beyond the Devon borders as neither I nor my navigator have passports at the moment and we don't like going abroad
