  1. A mate of mine is selling bolt-together cage kits, but at Billing he was getting lots of enquiries for just the front external sections, and indeed sold quite a few, with plates out/inside the roof and wing top. It's not going to fall off and certainly helps deflect trees, but little or no use in a roll. Of course, when people are offering him ready cash it'd be churlish for him to turn them down.
  2. Pugwash - I've got a wholly different reason for not going portal (apart from reduced road speed and lacking the mechanical nouse to do it)... Taking a step back, as the scene evolves and vehicles become more extreme (with portals, 44" tyres and monster travel) I can see a gap opening for more "entry level" events for the more mortal competitors. I'm sure many people here can remember when RTVs were the competition, a 7.50x16 Firestone SAT was the tyre to have and lockers were practically unheard of at local club events. Now half the field(?) have got ARBs or Detroit, Simex are more common and people are going further than before. Thing is, that 'further' is just deeper into the mire or further up the hill. Monster tyres, portal axles and rocket power will still leave you stuck eventually, it just rewrites what is possible for your vehicle. I get my kicks by bimbling around and exploring what the vehicle can do - since I've gone back to TracEdges I've found that that invariably means it's less work to extricate it when motion is lost. It just defines when you'll get stuck. For the boys who want to go where no oval has been before, that's great and best of luck to you all - the idea of being nipple-deep in a frozen lake is a little strong for my blood. I'll be staying at my own level and dragging myself 10ft back to dry land (slooooowly) with my Milemarker. Let's run a challenge event where everyone has to run bald Rangemasters - then we'd see who can drive
  3. Just one picture from me, the position Will left us in when Rob turned up and they ran back to start getting the punches we'd spent the morning going for...
  4. I wanted to get out again without costing myself wings etc - I hold my hands up to cheating (where the tape was high enough... we didn't break any!) because I was out for a laugh. Looking at my score, it didn't help much either!
  5. I don't think I can claim that's fully true, since there were several moments when I ducked under the tape. In my defence, I had a Milemarker, no lockers and a couple of hundred miles between the two vehicles in my team... I've got to drive to work in it on Monday, I'm not going to risk a wing/CV for the sake of some red tape. Pah, disqualify me (from last place) if you will, I had a great day and that was my aim. A cracking event with a really good format (competing on Saturday and drinking afterwards) and it gives the chance for a convoy of 80 mud tyres droning through villages, making enough noise to bring people to their front doors to watch us pass... Thanks to Will "Mr Commitment" Warne for bitchin', James for setting out and Tony & Val for the world's largest spread at the BBQ. Any photos? MiniTurbo took all our pics and he can't get them off his camera for a week or so. He has an excellent snap of the position Will left us in when Rob appeared and he could go and play properly...
  6. We're not all dead, but it looked like it was turning messy when I left last night around 10:30 - Val had just started on the red wine...
  7. Cheers Les... do you want a lift down (in the back of my Ninety) this evening?!?
  8. No matter now, I've got to go up there this evening anyway to collect some slightly knobblier tyres...
  9. I need a favour, a spare seat to BDB06 from Stonehouse in Gloucestershire. I know Les lives in the locality, does anyone have his mobile number? I'm on 07779*081520.
  10. Does anyone have Les Brock's number? I have a bitch (my brother) but he's in Gloucestershire and I'd rather not drive north to collect him first. He'll be in Stonehouse from about 1:30pm today. I'm on 07779**081520.
  11. Answer my PMs?! I've only just woken up! I will be stubbornly competing on TracEdges, with my Milemarker and currently still without bitch. I'll ask my brother if he's able but it'd be nice to have a backup (but not that little ginger one, I know what he's like).
  12. Better photo of the FIP with the diaphragm removed (credit to TuffRR on Outerlimits for taking one in focus!) but that said, I still can't see the cam follower in it.
  13. On the diaphragm shaft there's a cone as shown in the ORRP thread referenced on the previous page - I've stolen some photos here: The top photo shows what a much blurrier version of your diaphragm should look like. Apart from a slight lip at the bottom of the cone, it should lift straight out. Never mind. The bottom photo shows what you can see some of by peeling the diaphragm back. On the RHS of the photo you can't see (in the photo) a finger of wire which follows that cone as the boost increases. If that finger is missing or siezed, you won't get any extra fuel per psi of boost so poor performance. It sounds like the diaphragm travels about the right distance so I'd suggest that finger is missing, bent or siezed somehow. It should be acting on the cone part of the shaft.
  14. If you lift the edge of the diaphragm and peer into the depths below, can you see the follower resting on the cone of the diaphragm shaft? If so, does it move with the cone when you push the diaphragm up and down? How far does the diaphragm travel up and down?
  15. Paul, I have a horrible feeling my boss is going to get dragged into work on Saturday and I might be without a bitch. He'll confirm to me this evening yes/no but I may well be looking for assistance.
  16. No, it's still quite fixable by the sounds. Have you got a digicam? When you start the engine, does it take a few more turns than normal to 'catch' and fire? Pull the diaphragm out - can you see the 'finger' follower inside the pump? It sounds like it's bent or broken. If you can see it, kick the engine over and let it idle - any change when you move the follower gently with a screwdriver?
  17. I told you my plan would work, take his guide dog's attention away using doggy treats, you leave him to tap around the sills and wheel arches with his white stick and then just 'guide' his writing hand across the certificate. PS congrats, see you at the weekend!
  18. Whet our appetite - what's the site like after the prolonged hot weather? Humid and full of biting insects, or are there still muddy bits?
  19. It's idling ok, or slower than previously? Did it occur exactly when you took the pump apart? It sounds like the same performance I got from mine when I backed the main fuel screw off 2 turns (on the rear face of the pump, before you take the top off to get to the diaphragm at all) to pass the MoT.
  20. I've got spacers just like that on my Milemarker too! I found the front of the winch is slightly tapered so the faces aren't parallel to the bumper, but it all seems to work in practice.
  21. I reckon the shock mount can see as much force as the spring hanger on rough roads, but I take your point re lightness - everything on LRs is massively overengineered and this kind of thing is the only way to see how much weight you can get away with cutting out.
  22. The spring relocators look spot on, but I'd imagine the shock mounts can see very high forces, I'd be surprised if they don't flex without some extra bracing. I was talking to a guy at Billing who's making something similar, he's had failures around where your bottom welds are from fatigue.
  23. As NorthernChris says, when you're at full boost (Al's worked example is using 19psi) you'd be cooling the charge but at low boost (as you're running on your nasty petrol-burning witchcraft machine) you'd be heating the air...
  24. I also have a dead CB - anyone know of a place that might do CB repairs? I went to ask some of the ariel and coax retailers at Berling but none were interested.
