If you are determined to keep the existing chassis length as is how about slotting the ends for a inch and bending them in a tad. When you are satisfied the new crossmember fits weld the slots back up. Jas's idea of drilling holes in the extentions and then spot/puddle welding seems good sense.

Semi OT - Driver hours and tacho regs changing
sgnas replied to Mark90's topic in International Forum
I already have "C1E" on my licence. Came free with the "B" pass in a Fiesta in 1991 ! It's not hard to understand why things changed in '94. It is a bit silly passing your test in a mini then being licenced for 7.5T. -
Semi OT - Driver hours and tacho regs changing
sgnas replied to Mark90's topic in International Forum
Part of a frequent disagreement between me and my wife. We used to have a "Hobby" caravan. Officially too wide to tow with the Land Rover, alhough it was totally (and frequently ) capable. However legally towable with the horsebox (different width restriction over 3.5t) but stupidly long and slow. My opinion was I can tow anything I like with the horsebox as long as the train weight is less than 8.25t. Her opinion was I could only tow 750kg. A bit academic really as the horsebox does not actually have a towbar on it! -

Not read the whole document but I can't see it affects people who can currently drive a 7.5t on their car license as nothing has changed. It would however prevent someone with a valid license driving a 12t without a tacho claiming "non commercial" -
Removal of Viscous Coupling Fan?
sgnas replied to Anglo-Frenchman's topic in Defender Forum (1983 - 2016)
Thought so, I guess you need a f?+@ off sized C spanner. Could be worth giving it a quick go right after your trip, while it is still hot. -
Removal of Viscous Coupling Fan?

Is the shroud 2 halves (upper and lower) pop riveted together? Drill the pop rivets out and take out in two halves. I found it impossiible to remove whole with the fan still on. Water pump pulley shoud have a radial hole in it to push a bar in so you can lever bar against spanner. The hole is only about 8mm though so anything you put in will bend with little effort! I failed to undo one and took the pump off complete with fan (both were knackered anyway) and then whenever I had enough anger built up tried to seperate the two. Years later it went to the dump still as a complete unit! -
removing the whole unit means you will loose your blower motor too, so carry a rag to clear the screen.

It is possible, but a little messy, to change the matrix without removing the whole heater. Two spanner rating. Fold bonnet back too windscreen(or remove). Remove hoses, if you have not already bypassed. Release the control cable on top. Drill the poprivets out on the top of the box. Carefully peel back the top. (carefully, as you need to fold it back down and seal it). Jiggle the matrix out. Reassembly is the reverse of removal It's a bodge, and will not be as good a repair as taking the whole lot out. It's a long time since I done it, but time wise it certainly took less than an hour.

Borrowed a welder so I could put a patch in the crossmember. Cut out hole Made patch All nicely sized for an invisible repair once I had ground back. Unfortunately the HAZ indicated I had not taken enough out. The hole to the side of the patch is really for access. As the real problem is here Now, access is really poor so it is difficult to cut out. The only way I can think of doing it is to lop off the "outrigger" part of the crossmember, cut out, patch and then weld the outrigger back on. So, it is probably easier to hack the lot off and weld a new crossmember with leg extensions on. However, this is a bit beyond the level of confidence I have in my own welding. BTW, the vehicle is a 1989 90. This is the only area of the chassis that needs welding, the leg on the other side is fine

Removing Fan - Possible consequences?
sgnas replied to Anglo-Frenchman's topic in Defender Forum (1983 - 2016)
So easy you'll probably spend more time "planning" than "doing" "planning" being, where can I get some nice angle to mount it on? have I got a long enough stout wire to run the electrikery down? -
Failed MOT...no hazard warning connected on Series 3
sgnas replied to 90hybrid's topic in International Forum
Ermm, yes they can. Ask anyone witth a 7.5tonner who has had to fit marker lights this year -
I'll lay good odds the expander is full of crappy old grease that has got sticky. If you have an older vehicle a rod sticks ot of the faceplate and the cable pulls on that, pulls a wedge that forces two "pistons" out forcing the shoes onto the drum. These can be serviced very easily, simple spannering. Not looked in one wher the cable passes through the plate but I guess the mechanism is similar and has a similar propensity to get sticky. I'm sure Ralph will be along soon with an exploded diagram or two.

Take it off for the winter and fit an electric by summer -
Your insurance may well cover your car for towing it almost certainly will not cover damage to the trailer or load.

Ah, Michael Moore produced a very credible documentary that (paraphrasing a little) showed GeorgeW is an idiot crook who ues his position to give people who helped him up the ladder huge amounts of dosh and top jobs. Never ran a company that didn't go bust.......... Now we are well OT

At a guess it is a copy of the "conspiracy theory documentary" that the US set it all up so they had an excuse to invade Iraq. I think it is on UK television this week

Quickest journey in I've had all year! (40 miles) Like a good hardworking person I got up early and went in. All the lazy slackers in the teaching proffession cannot get in and the schools are shut so there are loads fewer cars on the road.

This lot seem to have everything Have you tried Mole Valley? Dairy farmers use something similar to line the dairys. Easier than making a 150 year old cow shed hygenic!

Unless he is a traffic cop "familiarising himself with the characteristics of the car" that is........

Why don't you just read the engine number? It'll begin 11J, 19J etc.....

End caps and hard tops and DVLA
sgnas replied to jamesledingham's topic in Defender Forum (1983 - 2016)
There was talk that this could leave you looking for an SVA test Now I could see it being a problem if you were chopping the top of a Corsa to make a cabriolet but changing TC to Hardtop really should not apply. However, there is one set of rules for ALL vehicles regardless of how meccano like they are! What body type is reported on the V5. If it says "4x4 Utility" or similar then you could argue the TC and Hardtop are both utility. Insurers should be told. If they are one that knows Land Rovers then it should not be a problem. As for seats as you have gone TC to HT then you'll have to inform as you could not possibly seat 7 in a TC I have a Hardtop (no windows) but is marked SW on the V5 so can take 7. -
The online system throws a wobbly if your MOT or insurance are due aound the same time as the VED as it does not have current information. So when you buy a car with 12 months VED and MOT and then start a new insurance policy you can NEVER use the online system It works fine with the other 4 vehicles we own though.
