  1. 55mph. Is that the sort of speed it likes to sit at on a motorway?

    Does it have an overdrive or is that just the standard box?

    LT77 with a disco LT230, 4.75 diffs and 33" tyres.

    Its happy at 55-60 but by about 70 odd, bearing in mind I dont bother with wheel balancing it shakes itself to pieces!

  2. I reckon it must be - I had a carbed V8 in my series for a while and it did 12 -14 mpg.

    Took it out in the end and put the 200tdi in cos I just couldnt live with the fuel consumption! My 200 has had the boost wound up and the fuel pump fiddled with and is just as quick as the V8, but at more than twice the MPG.

    On a good long run on the motorway at an average of 55mph I get about 38mpg.

  3. I dont recall needing any pullers at all when i rebuilt my LT230 beyond a standard, cheap 3 leg puller that cost about £10. You can remove the bearings from the gears by levering them off with a couple of pry bars / large screwdrivers if you're replacing them.

    Bearing in mind the fact that you never rev the thing over 3 grand anyway you probably therefore don't need it!

    Its needed on racers where you're constantly up at 7000rpm, but for a road motor is probably OTT. The idea is that it prevents your inlet system getting fouled with oil that comes through the breather system - you remove the bolt from the bottom from time to time and drain the oil out of it.l

  6. You cant just swap the disco box in cos the bellhousing is too long and the gear lever is too far back. You need a defender LT7.

    You'll need to make custom props to suit, and make up/modify trans tunnel and floors to suit. It can be done, but it aint easy. You'll also fin that the chassis crossmembers need modifying as thye're in the way also.

    I run a defender LT77, Disco LT230 behind the disco 200tdi in my series.

    The only thing you dont really need are the bloody FWH - they have no place on a landrover IMHO. They're a complete pita, casue more problems tan they solve, and are an inherantly weak link. You cant get parts for them, and alot of people on here have blown them up!

    I threw mine away years ago!

    Bear in mind that the autobox and the torque converter share the same oil supply, and that the one thing that kills autoboxes is cr@p in the oil.

    Unless you can absolutely guarantee there is no cr@p whatsoever inside it then do not even consider using it.

    If its been covered over the hole so nothing can get in then so long as its only surface rust it should be ok. Just bear in mind that the oil seal surface needs to be in good nick.

  9. There are no greenlanes in Ireland. They simply do not have any such thing. As such there is no legal right of way.

    However due to the relaxed nature of the Guarda I think you're unlikely to get into an awful lot of trouble.

    All the offroading that I have done in Ireland has been done on privatey hired sites - perhaps explains some of the immense distances the Irish are prepared to drive simply for a playday! KKK2 on here is very knowledgeable on this subject.

  10. I've got Allmakes ones on mine which I am quite happy with.

    They are better than standard ones in that they give much better axle articulation. However as JU says - it'll never be coiler smooth ride. In addition when encountering steep climbs especially, I find you get increased spring wrap and hence axle tramp than you do with stock springs.

    Bear in mind you need to shange the shocks aswell as the springs, and you may well find your front prop winds up a bit too short after fitting.
