  1. When was the vehicle built? If it was built pre 1999 (IIRC) then you can quite legally drive it without an SVA as there was no such thing in existance at the time. However you will need to be prepared to provide documentary evidence to prove this.

If you've just built it then you have two choices -

    1. SVA it and have the reassurance that you're above board and legal.

    2. Ignore it and accept the consequences when and if they occur.

In my experience there are an awful lot of people doing no. 2. As a good example as found out by Bishbosh on here, any rangerover bobtailed after 1999 will not have been SVA'd and is technically illegal. There are an awful lot of people still driving them however.

  2. I used the defender tunnel complete having cut the series tunnel off the bulkhead and then made up floor pans to suit.

You have to scallop the **** out the crossmember. Mine is a discovery one as the origional series one was rotten. IIRC I move it back an inch or so aswell for better clearance.

Series speedo cable fits the LT230 you just have to cut the screw plat off of it cos the LT230 uses a clip to retain it. Recalibration will depend on diff ratio, tyre size, LT230 ratio, and speedo drive pinion ratio. Too many variables.....

  3. You need to counterbore the bottom holes in the backplate and fit socket head bolts to tie into the ladder frame.

All the stud holes you need are already drill they're just not tapped. If you tap the holes and put studs in it'll all bolt together. IMHO its a bodge just to leave them out and it isnt alot of work to do things properly.

I have post on here before how to do it.

  4. Boothy - are you absolutely certain you've got the plug leads on in the correct order?

I've managed before to get the two to the middle two plugs transposed, and it still ran fine, just not quite right and down on power.

I'd also disocnnect every plug to all the sensors etc and check that they're all nice and clean. Including crank sensor, temp sensors etc etc

  5. Buy a new starter. End of.

I've had no end of agro with starters tht work intermittantly. You can strip them, fix them, test them and they work prefectly on the bench and for a while on the car. And then for no apparent reasons they just refuse to work when its most inconvenient. By the time you get home and try and fi it it all works perfectly again!

  6. TRawl back through previous posts either on here or on addicts as I've posted on here several times exactly how to do this using what parts. Its more or less a bolt on swap.

In short you want RR rear disks and hubs and RR rear calipers.

With this set up i had to thin down the caliper bracket by about 1.5mm iirc by flycutting it to centre the calipers on the disks.

Dont use front calipers for two reasons:-

    1. you brake balance will be all wrong

    2. the bolt holes wont line up with the caliper brackets as they're spaced differently.

  7. Defender 4cyl LT77 with a 4cyl defedner clutch will bolt straight up to your V8 via the conversion kit you already have. You cant runa series clutch as the spline son the input shaft of the gearbox are different. I used ti run exactly this setup before I swapped the V8 for a 200tdi in my swb series.

4cyl LT77 and Lt230 is doable in a swb, as its what i'm running, but it does require some messing with propshafts and crossmembers.

  8. You also tend to find that if the galve company dont think you've got enough holes in things then they get the drill out and drill em for you. Unfortunately usually where you dont want them!!!

IMHO it would be impossible to galavanise a roll cage such that it would still pass any sort of scruitineering due to the requirements to drill holes.

  9. Those areseries 3 door tops.

The glass is easily replaceable. You'll need all the fittings, window channels, clamping strips etc. See the series parts book for it all.

You'd be better off getting toughened glass cut to suit, as plastic scratches too easily and very quickly goes opaque cos of the scratches.

  10. Wisdom has it that it's best replaced by an electronic unit from your local Tandy. 10V IIRC.

I've had nothing but trouble with electronic relacements and have gone back to theold dinosaur technology as it works and is reliable!

  11. Sounds to me like you want to buy a 300tdi 90 and just swallow the road tax (it aint that much).

You'll run into all sorts of SVA fun and games if you coil a series.

Much as I love my series I wouldnt build another one - I'd buy a tdi 90. End of story.

Theres nothing wrong with well set up parabolics. My series on leaves has more suspension travel than the majority of coilers out there. Harshness of ride is subjective. My trucks quite heavy, so its not too bad. I dont personally find my mates 90 is any more comfortable.

  12. I've been running Allmakes ones for a few years now and have been very pleased with them. Anyone who knows my truck will vouch for how nicely the suspension moves.
