  1. just to throw something else into the mix.

Where all of you that have working applications running XP home/Pro etc, or were you running XP Tablet edition?

I only ask as XP Tablet edition has some features such as restoring the OS to it's original settings/overwriting the registry etc after a reboot.

Ah.............now that sounds like a more sensable answer..........

  2. Mine did that a year or so back - most of the single phase 3hp motors have starting circuit / twin windings to get it spining up with a sort of centrifugal switch to change over to the main windings - my start winding was goosed - just blew fuses / trip every time it tried to start. Investigated a rewind - but cheaper in the ned to buy a new motor of ebay or from machine mart if in a hurry.

Get somebody with a megger to test the resitance to ground through both sets of windings.

    Steve ;)

Well the capacitor didnt work! Looking like one of the coils is goosed then as you suggest............sigh..........

I need to persuade it all apart and I'll go from there.

  3. Only thing I'd say is if you're going to lose the electronics how will you control the ride height and level of it? Air suspension inherantly leaks a little bit here and there, and so will need re-levelling regularly. The rangie by default levels every 6 hours when parked, and every few seconds when driving.

Dont even entertain the use of 2nd hand air springs as they perish badly. Also most 2nd hand compressors will be on their last legs.

The air spring is a direct swap for the coil springs - you need to remove the spring seats on the axles and the air bags clip into the mounting holes. You'd need to sort out front shock mounts as you've mentioned.

Bear in mind also that you will have to limit the drop out travel of the air springs, as they're fixed top and bottom and cannot drop out like coild do. Rangie's also run anti-roll bars - I'd suspect you'd need to run these also.

Finally if you've never driven a rangie on air suspension it surprises a few people how firm the ride is - its certainly alot less comfortable than coils are.

  4. Cheers for the tips.

Its a SIP stratus 400/100. V twin direct driven.

3Hp = 2.2kW so should be well within the realms of a 13amp fuse! It is 240v single phase and runs via a 13 amp plug.

I replaced the mains plug after it melted a while back which was due to corrosion. I also rebuilt the compressor end not long ago and refilled it to the correct oil level. Unfortunately the previous owner left it out in the rain, so its all got a bit corroded. I think I'll have a looksee inside the wiring box tonight and test the capacitor with a capacitance meter and go from there. I might also check that its all free to turn aswell I suppose!

  5. Anyone know anything abotu AC motors?

    My 3HP compressor is sick!

Its recently been blowing fuses on an increasingly regualr basis, but once started did run fine. However it now just blows the fuse all the time and will not start.

It tries to start, turns over about twice, and then blows the fuse. My best guess is that the start up capacitor has died, and its just blowing the fuse casue of the inrush current, but I'm no expert when it comes to AC electrics.

    Anyone agree or otherwise?

  6. Does the disco have the viscous centre diff? If so I noticed a marked improvement in mpg on my 300tdi auto rangie when I changed the viscous for a working one!

My rangie gets 25-30mpg, and is bog standard save for a set of BFG muds.

  7. If they're absolutely immaculate, with no dents in whatsoever, they're probably worth alot. However I dont think I've ever seen a dent free series truck cab, and most tailgates have the towing hitch shaped dent in them.

In fair condition they aint worth alot - as someone says - I've seen them given away. It seems the demand for series bits is getting less and less these days.

  8. I prefer to set them up by hand. I've tried using the dial gauge in the past and its hopeless.

I also always blue up the teeth and adjust according to the patterns they leave. So long as yo dont disturb the pinion shaft or pinion bearings then there is no need to adjust the shimming, which makes life alot easier. Otherwise re-shimming them correctly is a PITA.

  9. Yeah i'd like to see that - I've got an 8274 with an Xp motor on the front and an M8000 with a warn 4.6 motor on the back. The M8000 is just pants. Drum is nowhere near big enough, and I've stalled the thing so many times - list time HFH had to winch me out backwards as the M8000 jammed itself up so badly it wouldnt go in or out!

The 8274 on the other hand I've never even needed to double line........

  10. Mmmmmmmm nice - whats that 4 barrell off of then, or where do you get it from??? Nice!!!

I'd just stick an Lt77 and lt230 in it an leave it alone. Mate of mine runs one in full time 4wd without any problems at all.

If its going to be a low mileage motor then I wouldnt bother.

Trust me - having done it, mating the series transfer box on aint worth the agro - Tonk now runs LT77. If you really must go this way then buy the ashcroft kit to do it with.

  11. YEs, edis is easy with carbs. You need to run megajolt lite - theres plenty of info on the website if you need it. ONly thing thats hard to get hold of (in the UK at least) is the edis8 module. Everything esle is easy. If I was doing another V8 i wouldnt consider anythign else.

I just left the old dizzy in place to drive the oil pump and just took all the HT leads off. Some others have cut the top off of a spare dizzy for a neater look. You need to retain the bottom part to drive the oil pump as you suggest.

I cant answer your questions on the lucas systems but someone else might be abel to!
