  1. Likely to be intermediate gear in the transfer box. Check very carefully for wear. I had to replace, the bearsing, shim plates, the pin it runs on and the gear, as there are no inner/outer races on these bearings, so when they start to break up they wear the shaft and the gear badly.

Replacing them reduced the whine, but its still there, just in a lesser form. I just ignore it.

  2. Yes it will, but you need to cut the series hinges off the bulkhead and drill the holes through the bulkhead for the bolts and use the defender hinges. You'll also need to swap to the defender wiper mechanism and wiper arms (require another hole drilling) as the series wipers dont even get close to clearing a defender screen.

I run one on my series along with a shortened 110 hardtop. A very worthwhile mod IMHO especially if you're tall!

  3. Megajolt i easy peasy to build and to fit. The hardest bit to get yor head around is where to time the trigger wheel in to. Once you've got your head around it its easy. What takes the time is making all the brakets for everything.

It does exactly what it says on the tin. Its fit and forget -it just works. Only thing I'd say is make absolutely certain you've got a good earth and its tight. Mine used to intermittantly cut out for no apparent reason, which i evenetually work out was cos the earth connection was loose!

Sounds like somebody needs a more powerful rattle gun...........

  4. Whilst we're at it I'll do one for my old SIP pile of cr@p aswell........

    Make : SIP

    Model : MIgmate 150 Turbo

How Long have you had it / How old is it : I had it from new about 7 years ago - sold it about 2 years ago

    Typical Current Price : £250.00

Maximum Welding Current (AMPS) : 150

    Output at 60% Duty Cycle : 113 @ 20% duty

    Welding Wire range in mm : 0.6 - 0.8

Small Large or BOTH re Wire Spools : Both

Euro Torch (Yes / No ) : NO

Argosheild Bottle - max Size that will fit : Small disposable bottles only

    Weight : 30Kgs

What is the most typical things you weld with it - thicknesses etc : 1-6mm

Other standard Features : Auto wire feed adjustemnt when changing power sttings

Good Points : The auto wire feed adjustment was useful. Usefull for small, infrequent jobs. Easy to store as its quite small.

Bad Points : Hmmm where do i start......constantly overheated and cut out on thermal when welding thicker materials, wire feed was a PITA, hobby style torch was a PITA constantly melting and packing up, disposable bottles were uneconomical, no wheels and 30Kg's is friggin heavy to lug about

On a scale of 1 to 10 1 being very unhappy with it, and 10 being "Its perfect for me" rate it :3

  5. Make : Cebora

    Model : Craftmig 180

How Long have you had it / How old is it : I've had it about 2 years - I aquired it from Tonk

    Typical Current Price : £465.00

Maximum Welding Current (AMPS) : 180

    Output at 60% Duty Cycle : 80A

    Welding Wire range in mm : 0.6 - 0.8

Small Large or BOTH re Wire Spools : BOTH

Euro Torch (Yes / No ) : YES

Argosheild Bottle - max Size that will fit : Biggest BOC do!

    Weight : 39

What is the most typical things you weld with it - thicknesses etc : 1-6mm

Other standard Features : er its got wheels and its red!

Good Points : Its red, and its nice and simple. Not too many settings to confuse me with. Wire feed mechanism has been trouble free and I've not yet managed to thermal it unlike my last one!

Bad Points : Leads could be longer (I could change them easily I've just not bothered)

On a scale of 1 to 10 1 being very unhappy with it, and 10 being "Its perfect for me" rate it :10

  6. OK, so road manners leave a bit to be desired, but they do produce the classic 'Land Rover Howl' at at anything over 30 :D

Er..........understatement!!!! They're fecking LETHAL in the wet!!!!!!

And they howl worse than simex do.........have to say I would never go back to them.......

  7. Trouble is with a £500 disco engine you end up with a bottom end at least that is in no better nick than that one.

I'd be inclined to shove a set of standard sized shells in it, hone the bores and see what they come up like, shove a set of rings in it and deck the block and skim the head again and put it all back together. IMHO those bores dont look too bad (ok its hard to judge from the photos) and would probably clean up with a hone.

  8. Yeah i'd second that - I did mine on a ramp, with a transmission jack, with the correct cradle to suit the box, and it was still a piggy of a job! I wouldnt fancy it on my back on the floor! If doing it on the floor I'd be tempted to drop the transfer box off first to make it all a more manageable weight.
