  1. When I were a lad, back on the farm, all the tractors had a hinged flap on the top of the exhaust. It closed when not running, and kept the rain out. When the tractor was idling, the flap would bounce against the exhaust. It's one of my childhood memories, the noise it made, tapping away.
  2. You've convinced me to get my left hand done. I was humming and hawing, but best get it done whilst fixable!
  3. That would be great. Bob couldn't remember the guy he used, but it might come to him. 👍
  4. Tell us more about the engine and vehicle. History, location, age. Photos will also help
  5. I asked a refacing guy that was recommended to me, but the concern is the process will mess up the temper of the steel. I've contacted a few gear repair places, industrial gearboxes, etc, to see if they would be interested. One option is to fit the cavitation damaged gear, and the bad input gear, and take pot luck. But not sure about that.... For now, I'll pack everything away and start rebuilding the main gearbox with a higher ratio output gear set. It will do to move the project on.
  6. I saw my physio yesterday and the carpel tunnel came up in conversation. He's told me to massage the scar twice a day to ease the scarring, and promote healing/ reduce pain etc. @JohnnoK you told to do that? I wasn't.
  7. Yep, I feel bad about that overdrive I put your way. I'm seeing if I can get one made.
  8. I agree. Anyway. It all went really smoothly after that, and started to look like an overdrive. So I spun it over and..........it baulked at one point in the rotation. A close examination of the new, to me, layshaft showed a cracked tooth. So, I need another new layshaft..... Still, I know how to do a rebuild now.
  9. Soft jaws are cheap! Anyway. The synchro unit is okay, compared to a lot. But I was lucky enough to get a bag of new syncro rings for not much money, so these will go on instead of the old ones. Some macro photos!
  10. I could do with making some soft jaws for the vice....
  11. Refreshed and somewhat able bodied in the new year. I cleaned up the input gear, and fitted the new bearings.
  12. I've read that it can take a year to recover in bad cases. Mine is nearly there, the wound is sealed, and, while it hurts at the carpel ligament when I hold stuff tightly, I'm able to use my left hand for most work.
  13. Sorry to hear that. Is it the wound? Mines doing very well, still nervous about putting much pressure on it, torquing stuff, but so far so good. I cup the wound by wrapping my hand in duck tape but that's it.
  14. Any photos of the old pumps?
  15. That's going to be so much stronger than the cast original. 4 more days before the stitches come out and I can start doing some light work. I've a target of getting the overdrive done before next year.....
  16. I like his stuff, clearly an enthusiast, and experienced. He says it like he sees it, and is honest. I mightn't agree with him, but that's okay. His review was fair, I thought. Mind you, with my driving needs these days, I'd only be looking at a second hand Dacia duster!!!!
  17. Oh. My. Word! This is great! Once my wrist is fixed, I had better get spannering. (Carpel tunnel decompression surgery last week)
  18. My tow work isn't very cool. Most of my towing is very practical. But it HAS been around Castle Combe circuit....
  19. Would an exhaust gas temperatures gauge be of benefit in this installation?
