  1. more of an indication of a Monday morning machine
  2. Don't think it will be a 300Tdi, isn't P reg 1997/98 in the UK? In which case it will be a P38a second generation model, and if it is a diesel that makes it the BMW straight six unit which is why it is a bit quieter than a 300Tdi FWIW I looked at buying a second generation RR before I got my Discovery in 2002 and I decided that the reliability record of the electronics meant that by the time they were a price that I could afford, they would be of the age when one ought to be thinking about selling it rather than buying it... I do still like them though
  3. Just to throw a spanner in the works I have 265/75R16 and they are nowhere near wide enough
  4. Me too - also it makes a really nice brrrrrrrrrrrrrt noise as you pull it up the rack Simple things please my simple mind
  5. I know what you meant, and maybe that is safe, but personally I have always put the handle up and flipped the catch down from a safe distance with nothing important in the way of the vehicle, because that would be what my father taught me 20 odd years ago and that would be what he had been doing for the 20 odd years prior to that. So far we both still have all our fingers and teeth etc and neither of us has been knocked out Plus I have never ever seen one come crashing down with a load on it when doing this though I keep everything out of the way when doing so just in case. If the load bearing pin is in good condition it shouldn't move with a ton of weight sitting on it... It is the lapses in concentration that usually get people - a bit like winching your finger into a fairlead.
  6. The best batteries around at the moment IMHO are the ones supplied by LR as Genuine Parts. I don't know what the prices are like in UK but we stopped selling others (Exide etc) because of a very high failure rate within a 1 year warranty period and there was only about a tenner difference in the price once we had shipped them down here. So far there have only been a handful of genuine ones returned. They are a high capacity too - 110Ah for the Td5 battery which will fit in any Defender or Series 2 Discovery. The (genuine, original) battery in my V8 Discovery has just passed 5 years and is showing no signs of distress yet. I think you gets what you pays for and in this case it is worth a bit extra IMHO.
  7. I think if it had EGR it will have had a cat, if it didn't then it won't. Best idea is to throw away both EGR and the cat though
  8. If the valve is not already jammed open you can blank off the vacuum pipes to the modulator unit with a couple of blind pop rivets and cable ties which is a damn sight cheaper! However if the valve is already jammed open it won't work.
  9. That's how I have always done it and how I was taught to do it - handle up against the rack in the vertical position. The logic being that with the handle down the weight may suddenly go on to the handle and make it whack upwards if you haven't got hold of it.
  10. Why not ask the DVLA? Alternatively Google is your friend
  11. 31x10.50R15 is about 265/70R16 equivalent - so will be not as tall (31" or more likely about 30.7", while the 235/85R16 will be nearer 32") and a fair bit wider. I don't think AT's are much good in muddy conditions but as long as it is reasonably dry they are OK - may be a bit wide if you are in typical UK conditions - not wide enough in this part of the world (hint: fill in your profile so we know where you are!)
  12. not a good admission on this site IMHO
  13. It'll be interesting to have a running report regarding what it is good at/not good at and any problems there are, just to see what it is like. Looks like the first ones won't be here before Sept at the earliest now
  14. Yes as MJG says take the carpet up and there is an access panel in the floor held in with self tapping screws, you only need to take that out to see it Carpet is a PITA to get out though...
  15. Never seen it on a 300 but I have seen a couple of 200s where the metal pipes coming out of the sender unit had corroded through and caused a tiny pinhole in the pipe which allowed air in, it should also be possible for this to happen on a 300 I guess
  16. Unless it is off a Wolf either it isn't a Rover axle or it isn't 2000, because the Rover type 110 axles with the Wolf/P38a diff weren't introduced until 2002 model year so late calendar year 2001.
  17. How about Bluetooth? AJL had a neat system in Wales on the 2004 forum laning trip with the GPS talking to the laptop via Bluetooth which gave an on screen moving map display IIRC. If there were any maps of this part of the world in electronic form I'd probably do the same but there aren't so it is a bit wasted The nine pin lead might be RS232 serial, I am sure they used 9 pin sockets but are pretty thin on the ground these days since USB came along... it has a crummy transfer rate by modern standards.
  18. I seem to remember reading somewhere that it was some fancy anti infra red stuff which cost a fortune and was a restricted military item so you couldn't buy it anyway. Wonder if anti infra red paint will ward off laser speed guns
  19. Has anybody on here got a Discovery 3 on 17" rims with Cooper Discoverer STT 245/70R17 tyres? Preferably with a few miles on If so I need to compare notes on tyre and rim fit .... grateful if you could drop me a PM Thanks Stephen
  20. Mine does that, usually if there is a lot of wheelspin e.g. suddenly booting it hard on loose gravel with lots of LH steering lock seems to cause it fairly predictably. Fortunately I have an IDS at work so resetting the bong is not a major inconvenience and I have never bothered to find out why as it's only happened maybe half a dozen times in 5 years - might be a different story if I regularly used it off road but I have a Defender for that which does the job much better and doesn't have the three bongs fitted.
  21. The ratios are different for a start - 1.22 vs 1.41 so if you fit a Discovery one it will gear up the vehicle by a fair amount. Don't know about the bracket though...
  22. I reckon you should keep it and flog it to death as it will only be worth 50p being an old V8
  23. Make sure it is not one of the turbo hoses collapsed internally (it will look fine on the outside) the usual culprit is the one coming out of the turbo and doing a sharp 90 deg bend heading to the intercooler, it delaminates inside and blocks the airflow. Produces exactly the symptoms you are describing. The other no power/lots of smoke culprit is the EGR valve being jammed open, if your vehicle has EGR fitted. Changing the turbo will make b&gger all difference to either of these!
