ashcroft 4.75 crownwheel & pinion £195 each. 1.2 box = pennies. Just spend a bit of time and you have what you want.

Deeper axle gears and a higher transfer box could be your answer.
This. Not sure what you are running now, but 4.75 R&P with 1.2 transfer box, works for me and is pretty cheap by comparison.

That person appears to be dreaming, you know that the comment "start niet" means don't you? It means "does not start".

sounds ideal to me.

I have had this problem with a devon diff guard. It did not occur on straight ahead position, but on full lock. Beware though, it was an MOT failure last year I had it tested.

I would'nt be doing that (undoing one bolt so it interlocks with two of the four pulley bolts) for anything other than a short distance low rev emergency as the driving flange those 4 bolts tap into is urine weak !!
wasn't suggesting it to be a permanent fix...

I would extend the cowl, if the height is right, and dont touch the fan. I did an extension on the 300tdi cowl, on a different height fan position, and made up the difference using an inner tube. Check my buildthread.

The trouble with that setup is, that if you are working things hard at high temperature (like getting unstuck), you are basically relying on the electric fan to switch on for your gearbox cooling. I would try harder to get the viscous fan setup reinstated, especially if the engine is in its original position, that should be easy to do. Alternatively, make your own cowling.
My 2P anyway.

I had a set of wolfrace wheels once, and had the nuts, bar one. I got a standard defender/discovery alloy wheel nut and got someone to turn it down. Worked ok.

I don't think this logic holds. The stock flanges do not fail from overload. They fail from wear. They do not protect the halfshafts.
They rust and wear out, just like the transfer box spline. I run oil, so the splines are mint. I believe they could be the weak link, which is in my opinion the most convenient place to have a weak link. I therefore still run standard flanges.

I had a bad experience with an electric fan, after a creek crossing it burnt out, not immediately but some time later when the fan was needed and never worked and the water temp went through the roof. Lesson learnt, electric fans are okay for road cars but not for off roaders, stick to the viscous coupled one, I also carry a small flat plate thas a hexagonal cut-out in it and four holes to correspond to the 6mm fan mounting bolts so I can "lock" the coupling so its permanently driven for very hot conditions
I just drilled the heads of the bolts of the fan and the bolts of the pulley, so I can lockwire the fan in the fixed position. I think you can even undo 1 bolt, so its interlocks with the 4 bolts for the puley, and than it is fixed as well.

I would use a viscous fan, with a means to lock it, and use the electric fan as a backup, either mounted, or as spare, just to have more options. I seem to remember you have an auto box? that is going to want some major cooling also, just a thought.

Interesting, and good skills. 1 point though: could'nt you have done a female mould, so you get the smooth side up?

In a recent crash in kent, were about a hundred cars colided in the fog, one of the reasons for the crash the police stated to be the cause, and I qoute: 'most people dont know which switch to use to switch on the fog lights'.
Here, I got my point accross without swearing.

There is only one option here - genuine. I had a QH one which started making noises.

Like the way you put the roller shutter roll outside of the garage, to not loose any space. I am going to have to do that as well.
What did you paint the floor with?

I never had the pleasure to meet him, but I read his stories in LRO. I also went to watch the webster trophy in '99.

I used studs and nuts in this application, to get more engagement. longer bolts than standard would also give you more engagement, but you cant get them in. I am sure you have seen why you can't get them in!

I used the beads that Devon 4x4 sells in my 35*13.5*15 Mudzillas, on double beadlocks. It removed the judder I had at 50 MPH, however, it would only work on completely smooth roads. On less than perfect roads, the beads get disturbed and it doesn't work basically.
I never tried to balance my simex tyres, they are tubed as well, which pretty much removed the posibility of using beads anyway. Interestingly, since I swapped the modular wheels for banded land rover wheels, any imbalance has completely gone, there is no need for balancing whatsoever.

It looks a lot like freelander type drive train , far too fragile for a defender type usage, wrong suspension , unless you want a quashkai type vehicle , bad space utilisation , looks like a cross between a G wagon and a haflinger in many ways . trying to look a lot tougher than it would turn out to be , just another soft roader
But for 99% percent of offroaders you see on the road, thats all they will ever need. Even Defenders, you know instantly whether it has seen offroad in its life, or is just a 'could be' offroader. Hell, landrover now sells 2WD evoques, its all about an image you create with your vehicle.

Could well be air in the system. I also have had problems with the solenoid. I you remove the plunger and put it back in, it will run so you can check if it is the solenoid.

A solution is a pre tdi gearbox, like a diesel or turbodiesel. This would lower the 5th gear ratio from 0.77:1 to 0.831 > -8%. It would put it right between a 1.2 and 1.4 transfer box, which is +17%.
Worth a punt I reckon.
More ratios: http://www.ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk/calc/ratio_calc.html

No it will just have a relay to turn off the headlights with the ignition. The full load still runs through the switch.
Mo
Is there a way of re wiring this? so the switch switches the relay at all times?
It appears all the components are already there.

progress. ....really ?

Thats way too complicated, you want sliding windows!
But to answer Nigels post (coming from the man who sells aftermarket electronics to update carburetted engines): yes We have made progress, the series does 20MPG for a petrol, or about 25 for the diesel, while the evoque does 30 for petrol and 35 for diesel. you can drive to the other side of the country in comfort, now try it in a series 3. And were they ever that reliable?
So, we on this forum dont fancy one, but look at the rest of the world, there are 200.000 sold since 2011, 80% to new customers (not previously owned a landrover), and 80% exported as well. Yes, google knowledge I admit, but that is very impressive in my eyes. They sell 20.000 defenders a year currently. The markets wants evoques more than they do defenders basically. Its complicated to work on, but most owners wouldn't dream of doing any work on it, electronics or not.
