  1. One consideration here is fuel consumption; since that is the whole reason for doing your swap, I would look at that. The 300 might be a bit old fashioned, but its fuel consumption has never been bettered by landrover from what I know. Not sure what a VNT does here, but if you just fit the turbo without overfueling it too much, things could even improve.

  2. I used the devon ones in my mudzillas. They work, but only on very smooth roads. on less smooth roads, they get upset and dont really work, giving you the shudder as before. Of course in my simexes, I run tubes, so you cant use them. But they are pretty well balanced without anything.

  3. We also disscussed the problem of running pumps dry at steep angles. He has a solution! He can change the pump he already sells to 'self lubricate' the scavenge sections. It'll look the same on the outside, but do the job! No need for strange dam-baffles to keep both pumps wet :D

You could drill conections into your existing sump I recon, and still get the benefit ;)

rev to low amounts by comparison. So no reason it won't work and bigger pulley means more drive area :D

But I dont see a problem with it running dry; running on a steep angle is for the pump the same as driving fast through a corner I think. The thing is that 'running dry' isnt really happening, it is more a case of running damp, very oily air as such. As said, I haven't seen a problem with this myself.

  4. Gears - if you have an appropriate motor power / torque envelope, I'm not convinced of the need for more than two gears. My electric Freelander has a top speed of 93 and accelerates better than a Petrol - but only has one gear!

Yes, but your electric freelander does not have an on/off switch as a throttle, does it? I agree that different gears with electric motors is not needed, unless you are trying to do something with a motor that it is not meant to do. It needs a controller to make it variable. Expensive to do, a controller for an electric car can cost as much as the motor, but think it would work.

Alternatively, if you dont want to go variable, how about switching between series and parallel? With a 24volt system and 2 motors that would be worth a go I reckon. Especially if your batterys are nearly flat, I think series could be a saver for both motor and batteries.

Anyway, trading on ice when I talk about electrics!

Ps, my winch has 5 speeds.

  5. even though its the road wheels turning them.

    Nick.

That is the biggest problem you are trying to solve though. it is incredibly inefficient to drive a crown wheel pinion in this direction. Hence, if you have permanent 4wd, it is not such a problem.

  6. I have another idea which needs prototyping - which actually came from Helicopter winches! Essentially a winch head with the motor and a self tensioning helical capstan which feeds the rope into a remote storage device. The potential advantage of this is unlimited space available for the rope and a very small form factor for the winch head, with constant line pull / speed. The 'clever' bit is the rope storage!

Is this not what the nokken winch on the 101 does?
