  1. if you taking a trailer then your budget for ferries is way out - would count on more like 2k

went to Finland about a month ago - nearly spat my lungs upon hearing the price, thankfully it was payed for by the company

Must be quite hard when you have no sponsors and every cost is going out from your own pocket - as well as buiding a race car

Hat down to all the little non sponsored people who manage to get out to foreign competitions :i-m_so_happy:

That was -and is- the main reason not to use a trailer for me. it almost doubles the price, since you are probably going to use double the fuel as well. Also, if you want to use the trailer and tow truck during the event, you need someone else driving it for you, and another entry fee (I think). If not, you will need to find a safe place to park it while you are competing, or it wont be there anymore when you finish. Al that means at least another person to add to the mix.

Another problem is the time you need to do it; it takes 3 days non stop to get there, and back as well, you probably want to spend a few days in St. petersburg and 8 days competing- thats 3 weeks gone by, which if you are self employed like me, means not getting payd. Also, if you are going with 3 people, to get them all to take 3 weeks off is a tall order. But you can have people flying in to make it more viable.

Al this means I wont be doing it antime soon, but in terms of competition, it is the best one I have done.

  2. What sort of budget do you need to compete in this event ?

I would count on a good £3k, breaking down in £1k ferries, about £800 entry fee, and the rest in fuel, food and beer...

This is based on 1 car, driven there on the road, competing and -who knows- drive it back as well!

It is good value for 8 days of hardcore offroading, and you wont regret spending it, all I can say make sure you have a car that lasts the 8 days.

On a different note, I noticed tr2 and tr3 now share the same tyre size.

  3. It fits and will work, but it might be an idea to see what you can do with the diesel engine first.

A long time ago I have build a tuned version of a petrol engine, which was based on an old 2.5 turbodiesel block with a 2.25 petrol head to create a high compression version. I did fit petrol pistons and con rods, in order to rebuild it, but it would have worked with diesel pistons I reckon.

  4. I have not seen any aftermarket chassis yet that is not the 4 plate welded version. It is indeed not the greatest way of making a chassis because of the amount of welding. But to make the pressed c sections would require a huge amount of investement that probably wont pay back with the amount of chassis manufactured.

  5. Do you have the v5 with the replacement chassis? In that case you could use that and all will be fine. The second hand chassis rule is new to me, I was under the impression that if the type of chassis was correct it would be ok. I reckon if you were to build it like that you would need to turn up for a vehicle inspection for the vosa to decide what is needed. They than would decide your car is close enough to the original spec to make you keep your original registration. The IVA/SVA sounds way too much effort for your case.

  6. It is possible, but the question is why? It is about 1" less clearance, about 30KG more, less available upgrading shafts, more expensive lockers.

Reliability wise, you can get a rover axle reliable up to 35" tyres so unless you go above that there is no advantage as far as I can see.

  7. It is called experience in rebuilding boxes, which is what ashcroft can and you cant (at the moment). Fair enough if you are having a go yourself, but try to get your point accros without slagging people off, something else ashcroft can and you cant.
