  1. Put it in 5th without the engine running, then when you go down to between 5th and reverse, it will not let you (Don't know the term but a safety feature to stop you going from 5th to reverse). If you then go from this point to neutral you will/should hear quite a loud click noise. This is the (we'll call it) '5th to reverse prevention' system unlocking!! If you don't hear a noise, I think, as you say, taking the cover of the selctor housing a giving it a bit of a clean will free up this.
  2. A mate of a mate of a mate.... (of course ) used to run his Taxi on half diesel/half (what he called) heating oil. Is heating oil basically diesel??
  3. Yes... PAS box to chassis bolt holes on the side are the same. Drop arm and PAS fluid pipes may need modifying.. (replacing with the correct defender parts)
  4. You're both stars!!! Thanks! Bits ordered keep an eye on my thread in members vehicles (No money, no sense)!
  5. Thanks James.. I don't remember a heatshield tho', can anyone post a pic of this?
  6. As above I can only seem to find v8 mounts ?!?! (Is there also one for the tx box? I'm replacing all mounts)
  7. having just done this, (Presuming that you have correct parts, paddocks once sent me wrong cv which caused the bearing you posted link to to collapse) i would say that after putting sttub axle on, you haven't pulled the half shaft out. Do this by threading a drive member bolt into the halfshaft\cv and pulling. i gave myself a scare but it was just too far into the stub axle, and so cv isn't central in swivel housing and locks up as you describe..... or have i completely misunderstood!
  8. Hi All, I have a few questions for those in the know: 1. I have bought some 'HD' steering arms for my Defender Here (Paddocks) and they are as in the picture (i.e 2 Track Rod ends on the long and one on the short with a threaded bit on the other end of the short). Am I right in thinking that the threaded end will go on on this bracket, i.e where the old on goes on? If so, how do I get the old one of. I have rigged up a spanner to turn it off (it must be threaded itself, right?) but it's very corroded if it does 'thread off'. And when I turn it it doesn't move (up the thread). :sigh: 2. How many exhaust brackets are there on a chassis, are they all the same? TIA!
  9. Perhaps, I live in Trowbridge... I'm a coded Mig welder in my freetime. If you don't mind disassembling it here yourself (It's a fair amount of work and I'm a bit reluctant to do it) and I could weld it?? EDIT: Is it your regular drive? (can you do without it for a while)?
  10. thanks everyone, the guys that run the workshop next to mine have a press but it's 'only' rated to 10 tons, i went away and left it for few days. i must admit the first time i was silly enough to not cut away part of the tabs so there was something to press against, but i did realise a good few hours before posting here! i sqirted the top side with wd40 and took a brave pill. the press got up to 9.5 tons on the dial and i thought it wasn't gonna budge, then i pressed it once more and BANG! hurrah! i'm now wondering, how do I press in the new one?! don't wanna pay any one, or damage the new one...!
  11. Besides brute force and ignorance (which i've tried and tried again) how on earth do you get the old a frame ball joint out?!? I've tried pressing it and got up to 6tonnes of pressure (nothing), I've also tried heating the surrounding a-frame with oxy/acetalene. Theres got to be another way!!! Please help, I keep running into brick walls like this doing my rebuild!
  12. thanks all, I did a bit of research but was after some opinions, Cheers again.
  13. As above really, I'm trying to use the LRseries site as you (ralph ) seem to use it a lot. Do you use microcat? and where can I get this?? (PM necessary??)
  14. Here I am refurbishing my brake calipers, is this a good deal??
  15. Diesel? Check vacuum pump and vacuum pipe one way valve??
  16. I'm not local but looking at yell.com I found this list.... Welders/Car repair
  17. How thick is the spacer/thrust washer. I ask to make sure you haven't confused this with the lock washer. The thrust washers should be fairly thick (thicker than lock washers). I have found that the Lock washers are normally a very tight fit, but the thrust washers can be slid on easily...
  18. Oh yeh I suppose I don't have to put it through the chassis! How would you guys go about mounting it securely and protecting it from being ripped off?
  19. Hi all, I am struggling to feed the loom through the chassis on my project. At the minute I am going from back to front with a bit of wire pulling it. The two connectors seem to be getting stuck. Does anyone have any tips?
  20. Thanks Ralph, so I take it that it's really really important to get this right (accurate). 1. What happens if it's not done correctly (How will I know i've done a good job/bad job when I drive the car?) 2. Does the process go like below? Any pointers on how to guess the amount of shims i put in first off? I have the Paddocks swivel kit, should I put in all of the shims they sent me first. 3. Sorry about all the questions I just really want to get it right, and I'm feeling like I don't have the necessary experience to get it right!
  21. Hi all, I am about to finish off refurbishing my front axle to put onto my chassis, the last job before it is finally rolling. I have seen the tech archive write-up and it has been a real help. However, the bit I really needed help with is sort of brushed over. I have never rebuilt swivels and so I'm worried about setting it up correctly. Do I really need a 'spring balancer(?)' to test the resistance of a swivel? And does the process go like this: Fit swivel bearings and pins with a guessed amount of shims. Test swivel resistance, if too loose, add shims. If too tight remove shims? Is there a way of doing it without a spring balancer? I don't have one, does it really mess up the steering if not done right? And the cheeky bit ......If i really, really need a spring balancer is there anyone close to me who I could borrow one off for the weekend??? TIA!!
  22. I second this, you can tell if the play occurs when wobbling the wheel holding at 9 and 3. Wobble at 12 and 6 could be swivel bearings.
  23. Nice cars, are you travelling at the moment? Cool site too..
