  1. Caledonian blue was the standard LR colour, and that what it looks like- but agree - take it to your local paint shop. Cheers Barry
  2. Welcome to the forum and the land of zero disposable income!! Enjoy your Landy. Cheers Barry
  3. Apologies for not directly LR related but does anyone know if its safe to view the eclipse on Friday 20th using a photo-chromatic welding helmet?? or indeed a dark glass welding helmet?? Cheers Barry
  4. LOL. Lady Studmuffin has been looking at nursing homes and George Clooney is top of her wish list! Poor beggar!! My Landy now has 85K miles after 3 years, but you never know. Truth be told its a good excuse to rip out a lump, just as insurance while they are plentiful, to add to the mess I call a garage. Barry
  5. So - As an old git, I picked my 2000Y TD5 90 SW with 70K on the clock 3 years ago as the last car I will buy, subject to it being nicked by scrotes. But I keep thinking that if the engine throws a six, what would I replace it with? I have always hankered after a Defender V8, and thought about buying a terminal rusty Disco 1 now while they are cheap, to strip out the engine/gearbox etc....for future use. Then I thought, what about an early 2.5 V6i used in the Freelander1, which I could pick up for Sub £1K? and sell some of the bits to reduce the cost even further? Has anyone tried this and are they any good? If so what is needed to adapt it to fit. Any advise appreciated Barry
  6. Welcome to the forum. Ralph is always spot on with these. Barry
  7. Some years ago I looked at making sliding composite stable doors, and most of the opposition were using pre-made rollers and track from manufactures like PC Henderson. From memory I think their head office is in Bowburn, Co Durham Barry
  8. That's the ones. Fuel 4.0 brushless motors. I like them because they are really compact in size and have serious poke. The booklet says made in Germany. I expected them to be American! Barry
  9. So we just had a new install of an Italian machine( about £1.5M) and I had to provide a full engineers tool kit. So after the Italian engineers had finished---- my Makita drills were Donald Ducked. Our crane engineers now use Milwaukees, and I got our Sparkys to order me a matched pair of drill, screw driver, hammer drill/impact driver from City Electrical at trade price. Today I got both 18V brushless screw/drill/hammer drill and impact driver at £328+ vat and they are the poodles plums. Very chuffed Barry
  10. A kind of associated heads up - St. Aldi have their air comp and air tools offers on Thursday 5th. Looking to buy an impact driver and air wrench for light use at work. Anybody tried them last time around?? Barry
  11. With Lidl or Aldi gear, which carries a guarantee (3 years for electrical items), I put the receipt in a plastic cover and either keep it in the original box, or in a file. I agree that they work out that on average most people do not keep it and cannot claim. So far I have had 2 replacement cordless jump start/ tyre inflators with no quibble during the 3 year warranty. They do keep their promises. Barry
  12. I live in Bridgnorth and have a Kennedy Pro Rivnut tool which does M4 to M10. If you prep everything you are more than welcome to pop around to fit them. If so PM me. Cheers Barry
  13. Its all of these things - plus - where else in life, anywhere on this planet, do you get a complete stranger flashing their lights or giving you a thumbs up when driving towards you? Priceless Cheers Barry
  14. Think it is called Surface Processing Ltd. in Dudley. Have no experience but think they are pretty well known in the total refurb/classic car market. Barry
  15. I may be wrong but thats as I understand it. Shame to lose Eastnor but 3 counties is a great site. Hopefully see you there. Barry
  16. I know its a little way off yet but I have booked to attend and camp with one of the clubs. Its the Bristol and West show amalgamated with Eastnor and held at The Three Counties Show Ground Malvern, Worcestershire. Anybody else going?? Cheers Barry
  17. Always amazed by your skill and attention to detail Mike. Best regards to you and Margaret. Barry
  18. My advice would be TD5 every time. It was the last LR designed engine and I prefer the gear ratios, but look for FSH. The TDCi has a Ford Transit lump. My local specialist say that if serviced properly they see TD5s with 200-250K on the clock before the engine needs a refurb. Ask yourself why they hold their values? The earlier TDi engines hold a special place in LR land but if you or your garage has diagnostics the TD5 is a very potent and relatively easy engine to run. My brother in law had a TDCi on lease. At 2 years old the rear X member/front bumper were rusty, + electrical issues, plus the gearbox disintegrated. I have heard that the utility companies are complaining bitterly about the number of gearboxes which fail. I think some of the forum members work in this field and could enlighten us. Either way you still join the Defender family. Good luck Barry
  19. Hope you get it sorted buddy and just as important I hope work picks up soon. I am sure everyone on the forum is thinking of you. Lots of us have been there.
  20. Thinking seriously about getting one for my TD5, but although I can get by on my works and home computer, when it gets to serious IT ability I am computer illegitimate. So is it simple/intuitive enough for 60`s dinosaur to use?? Barry
  21. Thank you both muchly. That feels about where I hoped it would be. PS I am guessing that you don't have much interest in buying a big plastic box full of Beanie Babies that my daughter was convinced would be worth shed loads in the future? Double Drat!! Barry
  22. Noticed a very slight occasional misfire the other day and checking under the drivers seat can see some oil on the wiring going to the ECU. Think that you are ahead of me. Have booked it in to my local 4x4 specialists who I haven't used before as: ( excuses time!) A. Am seriously flat out at work. B. Its cold and dark after work. C. As well as my own carp, my garage is full of my son and daughters dross which they have expressly forbidden me to dump. D. I need to drive a fair distance on Friday. They come recommended but, in the past having been quoted £500 by my local rip off garage for a high pressure fuel pump in the tank of Lady Studmuffins Peugeot ( when it doesn't have one) I like to be forearmed. Can anyone give me a very rough estimate of what I can expect to pay inc of the dreaded VAT if this is the solution to the problem? Cheers Barry
  23. Sugru will fill and bond in one go. SimonR said you can make your own with silicon and corn flour or talcum powder. I tried it and it works. Barry
  24. Having seen a few of mans best friends carried in the front of Landys or in the rear behind a mesh dog guard, can I suggest an alternative. The humble dog box. They range from the posh aluminium jobbies found in RRs to something home made. My current version is a mesh cage with the sides and rear covered with zip tied Perspex, but they can be lashed together from a wooden frame covered in ply wood and a mesh door at the front. The biggest advantage is perhaps in an accident. The dog is in a limited space can only travel and accelerate a short distance before being stopped by the box. Likewise an unrestrained Labrador in a 2 car 40mph crash has a terminal velocity of 80mph which will probably kill the dog and possibly the occupants. An incidental advantage is when a smelly muddy wet dog does that shake thing it keeps the dirt inside the box instead of plastering the inside of your truck. Just a thought Barry
  25. Barry is an expert on this stuff .From memory I think that its critical to keep 7018 low hyd rods totally dry? I keep all my rods at work next to the boiler and put the earth clamp as close as poss to the work piece, to use it to strike up first to get the rod end hot before beginning to weld. Keep practising. Barry
