  1. Oils nowadays need no additives. In a lot of cases in is actually counter productive.

I remember seeing a demo some years ago, using the two ball test (I cant remember the correct name for it) but it comprised of a steel drum that turned on a spindle, and two hard  bearing balls pressed against it with increasing pressure, until the drum was marked by the two balls. One ball had no lubricant applied, and the other had the lubricant/additive being tested. The pressure applied was recorded, so obviously the lubricant that recorded the highest pressure without the drum being marked, was the winner.

They tested WD40, an engine oil (cant remember what make or grade) an additive called XXXtralube, one called Nulon (similar to Slick50) and something else.

Guess what was the winner by a long way ?

It was the something else, which was Head and Shoulders shampoo !

  2. I use a pipe cutter too. Its a no expense spared Rolson tool but it works really well. MUCH better than using a knife. Any knife.

On bigger diameters I push a piece of sacrificial plastic waste or plumbing pipe inside to prevent deformation. This works especially well if you want to clip a bit off near the end. This is not a problem if cutting "mid run"

I have seen a big version of these cutters used by the water companies, but it would be a bit excessive for vehicle use

  3. I was/am going to do this, but the project stalled eight years ago, and I have not touched it since.

Have you gone manual or auto ? Conversion plate or coupled the Lexus AW box to the LT230 ? Aftermarket engine management or standard Lexus ?

Unlike the Rover engine, no more knackered camshafts after 50 miles, and it will never, ever, go wrong. If it does, it will be your fault !

  4. A mate of mine has it in his trackday BMW. More than that I cant say. I wouldnt bother with a road vehicle, but if you have issues, try Redline Waterwetter. It works.

I use filtered water in all my stuff, along with the appropriate antifreeze. Never had a problem except for a Fox through the radiator, but I guess that doesnt count !

  5. This is actually very common with this type of fault across all garages and types of vehicle these days. Not easy to diagnose, and the customer ends up paying for labour and components that have not cured the fault.

A "specialist" should be a better bet, but not always.

Seems to me that garages (and main dealers) are OK if you want brake discs and pads or shock absorbers changed, but when it comes to this sort of thing, or auto gearbox problems, you are likely to get stung. Very negative view I know, but sadly true for so many.

It has a roof! Heaters are for wimps 🙂

Yeah, wear a padded boiler suit ! Or, I used to have a WW2 USAF sheepskin bomber crew suit that I used when driving my old open series in the winter. It was too hot though, even in the snow !

I dont know how it would finish but I would sikaflex some ali off cuts to the inside of the panel behind the holes and then a skim of filler on the outside and paint.

I was going to say the same but with JB weld.

Whatever you do, you are going to have to paint it, and matching that up will be difficult, but that depends on how good you expect it to be.

I don't know where you get square door tops that long?

I'm 99% certain the 2nd row doors are shorter than a front door, hence the door tops would be wrong.

Just a guess. I have never had a LR with rear doors, so assumed they were the same length.

Anyway, I AM surprised that no one has mentioned the obvious, in that it should be on a Q plate because of the modified chassis and whatever else.

After all, mention 100 inch, or a coil sprung Series, and people are pulling their hair out !

And made sure ALL the panels were used, hence the roof box made out of yet another spare roof.

I hadn't even noticed that. I wonder if it is some sort of pop up roof, like they used on the old VW bus ? Looking at the effort that has gone into the rest of it, I wouldnt be surprised.

Gentlemen, many thanks for the replies! One less thing to worry about.

    Delwyn

Not so fast. While it is true that ANY manual flywheel from any year Rover V8, car or 4X4 will physically fit the 4.6 engine, it depends if you are hoping to retain the original THOR (Bosch) engine management (assuming a Bolivian spec vehicle is fitted with it)

If so, you will need a manual flywheel from a Disco 2 4.0 (not 3.9) as this was the only other Land Rover vehicle fitted with this system AFAIK.

I have got one here, but it is a bit far away !

End of this month I'll be joining 2 mates on a little camping and greenlaning trip. I've decided I don't need a camper, I'll just throw my bed chair in the back of the P38, with some stuff underneath and maybe an extra cooler with a dedicated feed. I wouldn't mind a bigger/ more aggressive set of tyres but I'm sure I'll be fine.
Which does beg the question why I'm putting all that money and effort in the build of my other P38... But it will be glorious if that ever gets finished. 🙂
So I guess I've just made a case for both the bare essentials approach ('cause I really want to go camping NOW) and an all-out no-expenses-spared project for the fun of it and to see if I/we can do it.

This is the thing, for me at least. What fun is camping without some "challenges" to surmount ? I just dont get this luxurious home from home thing. I like the back to basics approach, otherwise it feels far too well organised, and one might as well go on a SAGA cruise instead.

Building the vehicle though, is the hobby. Just to see if you can, and if it works for you, then great !

Sounds to me like it could be losing compression somehow? But very strange that letting it sit for such a short time would bring the compression back to normal. And doesn't explain the hard to start/keep running afterwards...

I'm wondering how the engine reacts to ether/start pilot/... sprayed in the intake when it starts to bog down?

Now that would be an interesting experiment, but maybe ether needs less compression to ignite it, so might not reveal much ?

Also, the low compression figures are with pistons that might have both been down while the engine was stood. Rust in the bores perhaps ? Losing compression an possibly damaging the rings/pistons ?

Is cracked pistons a problem with the NA diesels ?

  13. As you say, classic symptoms of fuel starvation. My initial thought was that the tank was creating a vacuum, but I see you have covered that one.

I assume that you have left the inlet manifold open, and not coupled it back up to the air filter and trunking ? Birds nest in the filter for example ?

Brother in law had very similar problem with a Disco 300 Tdi Auto. Turned out to be the IP was bunged up with the dreaded diesel microbes where it had been standing in a field for a couple of years ........ similar scenario ? His injectors came out Ok on testing though. He cobbled on a Bosch pump from a Peugeot 306 just to see if the engine would run, before investing in a proper replacement. And it did, albeit badly.

I cant see a cracked head would cause this. Smoke maybe, hard to start, pressurising cooling system etc

As for the breathing, its a possibility. Might have cracked piston or bore/ring problem, but again, more likely to cause misfire, hard starting and smoke. But who knows ? Surely would show up on hot/cold pressure test comparison ?

Could it be a valve problem ? Rust, sticking, weak spring etc ? Overall though, I feel it is a fuel or air problem.

Hopefully it's won't coincide with one of their Elvis Impersonator evenings - that was quite disturbing ;)

Hilarious though. I think they are great fun.

SWMBO (or I) will not pay the prices for event food on principle, and she will not buy Costa or Starbucks for the same reason, so she will do a really nice lunch which we take to events and have a picnic instead. Much cheaper, nicer, and not much chance of being stretchered offsite with food poisoning ! If it rains, we have it in the van, as we always take a van with the camping stove for tea, and consider it part of the day out.
